The private vs. public education debate (split from QB thread)

It's about where he went to school and his thumbing his nose at where the vast majority went to school. If that bothers you, start another thread or simply don't come back to this one.

Frankly, I don't care where he went to school.

The gators are not likely to suck this season.

Sorry, looking at the title of THIS thread, I thought it was about something football related, not the merits of public and private schools. Oh, thats right it WAS, til it was hijacked. So why dont you take my (and now your OWN) advice and start a new thread.

And for the record, I dont give 2 shakes where anyone went to school. I just want to read about UT football without having to filter through 6 pages of "My school is better!" "NO, MY school is better!!" posts.

And in regards to the Gators not sucking...
Blasphemy!!!!
They suck regardless of thier record!

And thanks for the welcome.

Your stay here will be very unpleasant if you don't learn to get over threads being hijacked.

I'm so sorry for this......

Your Liberal Views are silly! The private education system is better. LOOK AT THE FACTS. It is not the way it should be. Public schools " SHOULD" be better, but they are not!

So I tried to avoid getting in the middle of this but things have just gotten out of control haha... For one, PeayGolf, why do you feel this affinity to stick up for private schools just because you went to one? Just doesn't really seem to make sense to me.. Surely you can admit that more private schoolers are elitist than public schoolers.. While your parents may have worked double in order to send you to a private school, I'm sure you saw very quickly that most of your classmates' parents didn't have to do that...

Now, MOST IMPORTANTLY, what exactly do you mean by saying "the private education is better?" Are you referring solely to academics? Or to everyday life? Public schools offer much more variety (both economically, religiously, culturally, socially, ethnically, etc) than private schools do. Hell, the whole private school system emerged as a way for rich white families to send their white kids once schools became integrated!!!! There isn't a whole lot of heterogeneity going on in MOST private schools...

And lastly, from a personal standpoint, I went to a public school and made mostly A's and B's with a little more than a handful of C's and yet I was given the tools (both inside the classroom and through working and appreciating people other than myself) to do well at college and am now a Graduate Student at Harvard.... This isn't meant to be self-gratifying, but rather to show that what one means by "education" varies greatly and you should not limit its definitions solely to what you consider a "better education" to consist of.. I loved my public school experience...

Hey...I'm not afraid of any discussion! I have my values and opinions, and others have theirs. That is fine and great.

I will not shy away from any debate. I think I'm correct. I "could" be wrong, but don't think so.

My off base comments are based on the comments of others. If you do not like to be insulted, DON"T INSULT OTHERS!!!!

My parents worked double to pay for my private school education. My college education was based on my ability to be a very good player, not based on where I went to high school. If not for sports, William & Mary was my school. So...KISS MY ARSE!

somewhere there is a William & Mary Alumni group that is thanking God right now

Really, you think thats clever?

I dont....in fact its about as UNCLEVER as this incessant bickering about something as juvenile where you went to school. However, I keep coming back to this thread hoping that sanity has returned to both of you and that the discussion has returned to something useful and informative. I dont know, call me crazy but something pertaining to hmmmm....I KNOW, UT FOOTBALL!

I think you both need to get over yourselves and submit to the one universial truth...... Gators suck!

Im guessing that you didnt go to public or private school.

Holy smokes this has gone way overboard.....

Private schools offer a better (as a whole) education based on teachers and criteria. I NEVER said the students are better. I stated what I did because someone else said that "elitist" schools........I am not elitist. I did go to a private school, but I don't have these views. Do not lump me into that group.

I'm sorry about the "double wide" comments....but there were several comments made toward me that were just as bad. Lets move on !

I think the big issue here is everyone has way too much time on their hands. I mean, really, we're debating high school? Let's debate middle schools, then elementary schools -- maybe even preschool.

I have now wasted 10 minutes of my life perusing this thread and responding.

seriously calling me a liberal? that's funny as hell.

the system is not remotely better. The parents and students might be better from self selection, but the teachers are often the lowest paid. Additionally, some parents are just delusional about their kids' ability...
 BPV is a bleeding heart...

I find some of your rants about elitism and arguing about which type of school is better private or public along with the fact that you now go to Harvard humorous.

It's simple people. If you went to a private HS you are smart, athletic, and very popular. If you went to a public HS you are dumb, awkward, and a social outcast.

I went to elementary school with some of those private school, "cool" kids. Saw them years later at a Vandy UT game in Nashville. They thought they were going to give me some hell like they use to in elementary school. To make a long story short one of them thought he was going to try to be an ass. We both ended up kicked out of that game after a scuffle, he left with a busted mouth and I left with a smile on my face.:) Public schools are good for something.:good!:

I'd put it like this.

If you went to a public high school it is more likely that you encountered crappy teachers that did not give a damn and you were also subjected to an environment less concerned with educating you and more concerned with PC and teacher's unions.

If you went to private school. You belong to parents that most likely place such a strong value on education that they are willing to pay for it out of their own pocket even though they have a right to free education. Additionally, since they place such a value on education they are more likely to participate and be more involved with the school and are surrounded with parents of similar attitudes.

People making this a "me verses them thing" need to check the emotion at the door. I went to public school and can say without a doubt a private school student would have more advantages. Who doesn't want "better" when it comes to education? It is a large part of the reason WPAINE is at Harvard now I would suppose. I doubt it is for the diversity Harvard offers.
