We shop at one of the original Ingles stores a few blocks away from our house, aka the "bad Ingles." The newer ones in the burbs are all shiny and stuff.
Ingles deli is absolutely wonderful here.
Another Ingles a bit farther away from ours but definitely not in the burbs is close to an area with a lot of Latinos and has a good selection of Mexican and other Central American food. That Ingles is generally pronounced "Een-gless". har har

I remember a mock evacuation from my Houston elementary school to a Piggly-Wiggly store in 1962 or '63 (must have been the Cuban missile crisis.) Moms lined up in front of school in their station wagons, and we were all herded into the cars of complete strangers (to us) and driven to the Piggly-Wiggly, where we marched down to the basement, which was a civil defense shelter (hey, lots of canned food.) Then we were driven back to school. Most of us decided that it was at least more fun than duck-and-cover under our desks, plus we missed arithmetic or something. It was scary though, as we were told that the Russians would target Houston because of NASA.

Yes, youngun's, that really happened. My little slice of the Cold War, I guess.
