The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

I’m not sure if he’ll take it, but I’ve always said that whenever Rick retires my first call is to T.J. Otzelberger at Iowa State and make him say no. His annual salary right now is $4 million, which is $2 million less than Rick Barnes makes here.

Maybe Otz likes coaching at a smaller school with less pressure to win, but you could give him the Barnes contract and see if he says no.
He wouldn’t hire Jeff Walz, who was begging for the job, so he won’t hire some proven coach at a major program.

Her team was outmanned today and still turned in a good performance.
I know you support her, and that's fine. They may have been outmanned, but they crapped the bed when it mattered, again. An all too familiar theme for her. At least the substitution patterns were reined in, at least in the portion I watched. Just too many TOs and boneheaded plays. Not getting a shot off on the final possession is crazy, as is having the person you clearly want taking the shot also be the inbounder with 6 secs left. Those things just don't make sense to me.

The future of her team is very young. Once they mature I really believe she will have a team nobody wants to play.
Obviously Mia Paulo was missed, but keep in mind Caldwell didn't let her team collapse 11 points down in the 1st half against a top 4 team. As for the missed shots and boneheaded plays that's freshman mistakes.

Who other than Heupel has he hired and what are their records?
Danny white has served as athletic director at other schools . His hires have been pretty successful. White was a former basketball player assistant coach and head coach. I trust he knew what he was looking for when he hired Caldwell. We will have to wait and see how baseball turns out. I do think he finds that 3* lineman that goes on to be all pro.

Moral victories are awesome. The “David v. Goliath” angle doesn’t play when you’ve got the top 5 payroll in the sport. Who built the roster?

I know a lot depends on how we finish but safe to say he has one more year at least say we make 16 or 8

I honestly think he has no idea. He seems to like the freshman class. He will probably wake up one day and just say he is done.

Cooper is not a freshman and she had the most turnovers yesterday. Caldwell has all the support financially (NIL) to not be a top 15 or better team next year and start beating the elite teams consistently if not she will be gone after year 4.

You think all the young players are coming back? Do you know how college sports is? Spending on young players in this era is a fool’s errand.

Just don't see Lady Vols hiring a male HC in my time...sadly the blue hairs that helped build that program to what it is with their financial support are also willing to handicap any new hires by the AD.

I think Walz would have been a better hire, but I'm not fully out on Caldwell yet.

Oats is a good recruiter and a fair game coach but he's a slug. The other two haven't exactly set D1 on fire.
And to be fair, he didn't discover Nate Oats. Bobby Hurley did, and hired him as an assistant. Oats simply promoted him when Hurley left. Credit to him for doing so, but it isn't exactly like he scoured the coaching ranks and plucked Oats out of anonymity.

I’ve been all in on Walz the last two times they had an opening, but you’re right about a man not getting that job. Because of the people that love equality and stuff.
