The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

Anxious to see if Barnes can add value tomorrow? Enough to get a win?

We know he emphasizes defense, rebounding, and playing with mental toughness and tenacity.

Can he author a good offensive game plan which generates some easy points? Can he manufacture additional points in crunch time? Can he make his team "hard to guard"?

Can his anguish from a bad defensive play be quickly soothed by a good offensive play? He seems to dwell on bad plays far more than good plays. He remembers the mistakes.
What makes your think Barnes dwells on the “mistakes” or bad plays vs. the good ones?

Barnes ltalked for minutes, again, after last game about how great JG has been and done everything and more than asked or expected.
The Barnes haters are ready to rejoice at an L today and I hope we shove a W down their throats.

It sounds to me like you're ready to rejoice at the Barnes haters rejoicing at taking an L so you can say I told you so. What say you?

stop being a wet blanket anytime someone says something. you're a bore. also I'm right and it will be proven out.

Oh, wow, how prophetic of you. Really going out on a limb with your projection that Barnes won’t do something that no other coach in Tennessee history has done and that hundreds and thousands of coaches go their entire career without achieving.

You are a certified ball knower.

I like Coach Barnes, I got a lot of respect for him, but I question the "great talent evaluator" moniker. Our roster is woefully limited in some areas.
Evaluation and development have been stellar...convincing guys to come play here is another matter especially given NIL $$$

Edit: I will also say that CRB's role imo is that he is strives too much to acquire and play specialists (i.e., rim protector, lockdown perimeter defender, 2 scorers in JG and NA and Carey as the bruiser who is a poor man's Stokes type player) at the expense of guys who can all-around play...this makes us easier to scheme and defend.

While I agree, we've seen there are players still out there when you miss on your top guys. We are getting guys who can't shoot, have a hard time hitting FTs, not very quick, not great athletes, and turn the ball over. Admittedly they play hard and are good teammates.

I missed this as I was adding an edit which alludes to this. Bottom line, we've known since CRB arrived that some kids just won't come here and work and be challenged. Add in $$$, guaranteed P/T (again, CRB won't do), etc... and it's quite amazing how well CRB has evolved and arguable thrived in this new enviro despite the absolute certainty quite a few posters had to the contrary.

I said in it a post last week...CRB has shown in recent yrs he will get a walking bucket guy and allow a drop in D for a big jump in O. His next evolution needs to be multiple walking buckets who will commit to being better on D in our team scheme.

I haven’t predicted anything. Ready to watch some games and hopefully celebrate. Just don’t care for people of low character and they show up after L’s.

When we fill out tournament brackets isn't that what we're doing?

The ignore list helps.

Don’t have to deal with the low IQ posters.

Makes it so much bearable.

Potential candidate list for if and when CRB retires:

1. TJ Otzelberger, Iowa State
2. Josh Schertz, St. Louis
3. Fred Hoiberg, Nebraska
4. Bryan Hodgson (if he does well at Providence)

Literally anything other than an internal, "promote from within" hire would keep this program rolling.

There’s the culture aspect to consider. There’s the spiritual aspect not all players and families are comfortable with. Others love it. And there’s the knowledge of how hard it can be to play for Barnes. You have to play D and selfish one on one ball is frowned upon. Not all kids are cut out for it, especially this day and age when they are pampered, paid before getting on campus, and can just quit and go somewhere else when things get tough, which is what the portal teaches.
He will never be a used car salesman with a bunch of promises like some of his peers and let them get away with poor effort on the defensive end.
Acuff, for example, is an obvious stud and early nba pick, but gives little effort on the other end. People don’t need to hold their breath waiting on Barnes to bring in players and let them just give effort on the offensive end.

Generally FT shooting hasn't been a problem. Seems like you're pointing out flaws with this particular team. It's not going to be perfect every year. As a rule those things haven't been an issue

My question to those who worry about finding another coach because of Barnes success at Tennessee? What if he does retire in the next 2 to 3 years? What if he does this year? I'd love to see Tennessee reach a Final Four, but I don't see how you can hold on to a veteran coach at this point for so long like Barnes.

The one argument for Barnes to keep coaching (if I was viewing it in his eyes) is this core he has that has somewhat surprised this year.

Losing JG and Ament will hurt but Barnes has very clearly excelled at one year rentals in the portal and when it comes to that aspect, his age doesn’t matter.

The argument against is if he wakes up when the season’s over and all of the sudden, Tennessee’s core guys for next year like Boswell, Evans, Estrella, Cade, Henderson, and Brown are getting raided with NIL offers from other schools.

After watching this season especially, but the last few seasons., i think it is time for Rick Barnes to retire. This game with Virginia, it is so obvious, Barnes has lost his edge on game day coaching. He can recruit, but his game day decisions are so obviously ridiculous. He cannot realize that Nate Ament has very little offense and NO defense today. But Barnes has left him in after Ament keeps making stupid plays and has been out of gas for most of the game. He has cost UT many problems and is most definitely not ready for the NBA. He would get mauled even in the G league. But the real problem is Barnes not even coming close to realizing it. Yes, Ament is hurt. But, he cannot play offense and does not come close on defense especialy in the 2nd half. Barnes did not realize that Virginia knows that and is taking advantage of it. Ament keeps making mistake after mistake after mistake. But Barnes keeps riding a dead horse!!! I've been a Vol for longer than most of you, since the 60s. But if you can't realize it, it will just get worse. Great win for the VOLS, thanks to Gillespie!!!! Barnes and Ament need to give their NIL and part salary to Gillespie, he's so much more worth it.

Taking this team to the Sweet 16 is one of Coach Barnes better coaching jobs.
