The "official" Lost thread

And how about this: Tree mark - Lostpedia - The Lost Encyclopedia

This site discusses a symbol carved into a tree at "Ethan's old drop-off point" whatever that is. Well, the site above indicates one possible interpretation of this symbol: "Some ufoists claim that the symbol is that of Ummo, a planet in an undiscovered solar system."

Regarding last night's episode, here are a few ideas that occurred to me:

- When Sayed died and was brought back to life (after being put in the water, or whatever), he was then "claimed" by someone or something. At first I thought this meant that an alien life form had somehow possessed his body and would take over. However, I note that they would not use the word "possessed" to describe what was happening. So, it would seem that whatever process Sayed went through has somehow given Smokie a doorway to use to control him. The same think apparently happened to Claire. So now Smokie has control over Sayed and Claire and whoever else might have undergone a similar experience. Perhaps Smokie is building an army, so to speak, and once he has enough people, then "they're coming!"

- I think somehow this ability to be controlled by Smokie (or, if that theory isn't correct, being "claimed" by whomever) has something to do with why babies are not born on the island. Perhaps babies in utero are inherently succeptible to being claimed.

Well I think you entirely missed the point of my original post on this idea. The idea of aliens visiting earth in ancient times is not a new idea. Many argue that the evidence of it can be found in ancient cultures throughout the world, including in ancient Egypt, pyramids the world over, ancient symbols, pictures, etc. Obviously, ancient Egypt, pyramids, mysterious symbols, etc., play a big part in Lost. All of those things would be the link to the ancient aliens. It seems to me that this is exactly the kind of thing that the writers of Lost might just do. Subtle hints, but nothing too direct or it would be too easy to figure out.

I get what you're saying about the aliens now. Regarding Walt and his comic book(which was actually Hurley's), we never see any of it on the show except for the Polar Bear pictures. None of the actual comic book is discussed within the show. There are dozens of books that are mentioned in much more detail than Hurley's Spanish comic book. I'm only looking at theories that are based on events that are shown on the show. What I mean by that it, if I have to go on the internet and read the comic book because it is not discussed on the show then I'm not putting to much into it. Now, had Hurley translated part of the story to Walt, then I think you would be on to something.

probably been mentioned but we will get a Richard Alpert flashback episode this season. That should be a strong one

If they took that route, it would be way too obvious. Everyone would figure it out almost immediately. You're right, there are lots of books mentioned on Lost. I'm going to look some of them up and see what they're about. I've forgotten what most of them are.

Here is another possible meaning behind the symbol.

"In the Cyrillic alphabet, it is similar to the first letter in the Russian words for "life" (жизнь) and "woman" (женщина)."

Considering that Juliet went there to get medicine for Claire when she was sick, it could be interpreted that way as well.

Yeah, that should be interesting. I remember at one point thinking that Richard Alpert was an Egyptian pharoh, based on something that happened in an episode from last year (which currently escapes me) and just his general look. He definitely looks Egyptian. I also note that his initials are R.A. As in Ra, the Sun God. Yes, I know Ra was an Egyptian god, not a pharoh, but there is definitely something Egyptian about this guy.

I totally agree with you on that but the comic was never even really seen or discussed outside of the polar bear picture.

Of Mice and Men, Our Mutual Friend, Watership Down, Carrie, A Tale of Two Cities, Lord of the Flies, Alice in Wonderland, The Turn of the Screw. That all I can remember off the top of my head.

Smokey said that he looked different without his chains or something to that effect. I took it as he was on the Black Rock.

It was an ok episode. It was slow until the last 10 mins. It's always like that with Kate centric episodes. I'm really interested in this new "dark" Claire. The next two episodes are Locke and Jack centric, so they should be really good.

True, it could have many meanings. And admittedly, the "Ummo" thing seems pretty far-fetched. So does "the first letter" of a couple of Russian words. I'm sure there are thousands of words that begin with that letter. And why Russian? I was just trying to see what potential "alien" hints might have been used previously in the show. This symbol probably isn't one, but who knows.

Mikhail?

I don't think that sayed has been possessed by an evil or smokie.

You could tell that it was not sayed while he was being tortured. Sayed would never have been such a wuss about it. "What are you doing you don't have to torture me I haven't done anything". Completely out of character for him. If anything based on his general responses though out the night he just became a good guy perhaps even Jacob. This show is about reversals so it definitely fits. Good guys becoming bad and the bad becoming good.

Makes you wonder who else has the sickness. Was Smokie possibly a good guy at the beginning as well before getting sick?

Who is/was in Christian's body and wasn't Claire seen with Jacob at one point?
