The Official Dan Mullen Thread

Having a losing record in the SEC does not make you a winner, nor does getting a winning record against schools like Southern Miss, UAB and the like.

James Franklin was .458 in the SEC at Vandy. When he moved up to a blue blood program he did alright.

Lol. So his 8-1 record vs Kentucky is that bad?

8-1 is not bad. It's the fact that the loss happened in his 8th year in a losing season. And that wasn't even his worst loss. He actually lost EASIER games to cupcakes. He's a good coach, not a great coach. I don't want to pay $6MM+ to lose to cupcakes.

He has done something significant there.

He’s literally surpassed averages st that school in wins, rankings, recruiting rankings, among others. If you really don’t think what he has done at that job compared to their all time history, you’re sadly mistaken

Yay! He's above average for MSU. I want a coach who is exceptional... not merely above average. He loses to cupcakes in his 8th year. That's really hard for me to take. I don't like the idea of sitting in the stands in 2021 for the Homecoming game and losing to Cupcake University.

So if we are cherry picking, i would take a loss to UK if it means beating #12, #2, and #8 Ranked teams in 3 straight games.

According to you, Chip is magnificent and could challenge Saban even though he has shown he can’t beat even a Non Saban SEC Team

Same thing could be said about Mullen.

I know I know, he “almost” beat Saban.

That’s just what we need again is another moral victory coach.

So, he's a little better than all their previous terrible coaches? Amazing, sign him up.

Like I said, this is the type of mentality that gets us jokers like Butch Jones and Derek Dooley. I can almost see the conversation now:

"How can we fix the problem of finishing at the bottom of the SEC East? I know!!! Let's hire the guy who finishes at the bottom of the SEC West! He's not as bad as Sylvester Croom, so he should be awesome here."

No thank you. Get a real winner.

Josh, are you just against anyone not named Gruden?

You show him constant love in your safe place.

Gruden, Patterson, Peterson, Kelly. If not them, I would even take someone like a Taggart or, maybe, Fuente.

Gruden was never a reality. Kelly was a big name, but not sure he is a good fit in Knoxville. And that is based on things he has said previously, not about Knoxville specifically, but saying he would prefer to coach on the West Coast, or if the right East Coast job opened. It looked like UF might be that EC job, hut now UCLA has an opening, and now it looks like that might be his destination. I felt that even if jobs like UF and UCLA were not open, and he came to UT, that he might pull a Kuffin as soon as a good WC job opened. And not sure about his ability to recruit.

Patterson was my #1, and has said he might leave TCU for the right price, but not sure he would now be interested in UT thanks to Hamilton.

Peterson is a WC guy and is doing very well on the WC.

Taggart? If we can't get anyone else, but again, not sure about the fit in Knoxville. And I don't see him as a better hire than Mullen.

I would be good with Fuentes, but can't see him leaving VT at this point in his career. And not convinced at this point he is a better hire than Mullen.

Actually I have a list of good coaches that I wouldn’t be against:

Gruden
Kelly
Patterson
Peterson
Fuente
Frost

All 6 of those candidates would be better than Mullen.

Sure, Gruden would be great and bring talent in. He'd be better.
Patterson runs a weird defense that I don't think would work in the SEC. He's good, but I'd put him a shade below Mullen.
Peterson would be a good get. Maybe even a bit better than Mullen, but he's a west coast guy which makes me a bit nervous. He'd certainly be splashy and good for us.
Fuente is a good too, probably about the same level as Mullen.
Frost doesn't interest me. I'm tired of these G5 hires.

I would take Gruden off the list, but otherwise, those are all good coaches.

I don't see any reason not to include Mullen as well.

Like Franklin, he is limited where he is now.

There is no true "home run" hire and contrary to your beliefs, everyone wants the best available coach for UT.

So basically Chip Kelly is nothing more than “Moral Victory University”

Not sure why’d you want that.

He’s not a “little better” than previous coaches. He’s better than Croom, Sherrill, and the other previous coaches in school history.

Your lack of knowledge is showing terribly. Prolly a millennial

What has Mullen done before and after 2014 besides Sexton getting him a big fat pay raise in 2017????

But... (lol) I'd add Gundy to the top of my list :)

The obvious difference is that Kelly lost with a talented roster to those 2 SEC teams; Mullen loses to those SEC powers with one of the least talented rosters in the SEC.

I know, I know, this is where I am told a great coach finds a way to win. But what if there is another great coach on the other side of the field with an infinitely more talented roster?

I am betting on the guy with the talent.
