The Official Dan Mullen Thread

I agree completely. I was just listing names on the board that were considered big hires.

I'm legit excited about the possibility that Florida takes Kelly instead of their home-grown former OC that has been killing it at MS State.

Kelly flames out while we ride high with Mullen laughing in their face all the way. This has all the fixin's for a disaster for UF and a big boost for us.

I should've included the /s. It was in response to Kelly being exposed by the SEC.

And to be fair, Saban didn't lose in his 8th year.

He still had a more talented team than La-Monroe, even though he took over Shula's team.

While at Michigan St. he also was upset by Purdue after upsetting Ohio St. in his 4th season there

The point being, unless you have a team loaded with elite talent, you are susceptible on occasion to losing games you shouldn't.

Ask Dabo. He was having to reload at QB this season with another elite recruit, kid gets hurt, and Clemson loses to Syracuse.

Does that make people question whether Dabo is a great coach?

It shouldn't. An occasional bad loss here and there should not define a coach. Especially a coach who is not in a position to have a loaded roster.

Dan Mullen did all of this at Mississippi State. Not at Auburn, Not at LSU, Not at Bama, Not at A&M, but at Mississippi State. In the west, it's the poorest athletic department. Facilities and revenue. It's not even the most popular school in the state! It's the third poorest in the whole sec behind vandy and mizzou. In 9 seasons, He's had a winning record, pushing for another 10 win season, 5 bowl victories. Now imagine what he could do at tennessee. Bigger wallet, a more sellable brand for recruits, an easier side of the conference.

Gruden has never made one recruiting trip. He's coached grown talented men who make money. He's an x's and o's guy. I personally like gruden. His overall record in the nfl is 15 wins over .500. The time for Gruden is over though. I would've been estatic if he was named HC instead of Dooley or Butch. But now I want someone who's a winner at the P5 level. Which Mullen is.

What has he accomplished? He still has a losing record in this league. I don't care if he padded his stats with non-conference wins, that's what Butch did, too.

I have a hard time spending $6+ million on a guy with a losing record last year (in his 8th year). With losses to South Alabama and Kentucky... and a near loss to UMass this year and last. I don't think that great coaches lose cupcakes in their 8th year.

Lol. So his 8-1 record vs Kentucky is that bad?

Getting Mississippi State to a bowl game is a rare achievement. Getting multiple 10 and 9 win seasons there is insane.

if you want to question mullen, i agree, that's it. you know how i feel about mullen. and i've said it many times, he's not my #1, but he's certainly considerable as a candidate. and i think there's enough good there on his resume that can overcome many, if not all, of the shortcomings if paired with a program like TN, and expectations like TN would bring.

the reason he's not higher on lists, is because of that kind of question though.

it's still not a reason to simply not consider him, imo.

This is what amAzes me about special fan base.

Had Mullen been coming off coordinating 2 natty’s in 4 years at an SEC school, people would gladly take him.

Yet people actually ding him for his job at MSU.

He has done nothing to hurt his brand or to question his coaching ability at State. He would have been a good hire in 2008/2009 and he is a good hire for us now.

This is the type of crap that has kept us from winning the SEC for 20 years. We accept mediocrity and think it will, magically, get better by sheer hope, "fan support" or other such nonsense. You want to win a championship? Go hire someone who's won one, not someone who did pretty good with what he's had and think the magic of The Hill will push him over the top. Mullen is alright, nothing special, thus far as a coach and there's no reason to think that he'll be anything otherwise at UT.

However, based upon the type of think prevailing at the UT campus over the years, I fully expect to see Mullen at the podium in Knoxville next week.

Just curious, are you honestly saying natty’s are possible at MSU?

It doesn't have to be a NC at MSU, just win or do something of significance. He's finished above 4th in the division once in 9 years. This means 8 out of 9 years, he's been in the bottom half of the division in the SEC West. What's remarkable about this? I know it's a tough division, but, if he's a great coach, then he should be able to punch above his weight more often.

You have yet to say who you want over Mullen, and if you say Gruden I will stop paying attention to you.

He has done something significant there.

He’s literally surpassed averages st that school in wins, rankings, recruiting rankings, among others. If you really don’t think what he has done at that job compared to their all time history, you’re sadly mistaken

First off he's 69-45.

Second, .500 in the SEC at Mississippi State does indeed make you a proven winner. It is an impossible job.

Having a losing record in the SEC does not make you a winner, nor does getting a winning record against schools like Southern Miss, UAB and the like.
