The Official Dan Mullen Thread

The only thing that will convince you guys is for us to hire Mullen and then see the underwhelming results

Just like it had to happen with Butch

One thing is certain, UT fans will never learn from past mistakes
puhlease. you've not done anything in this thread except say "water is wet" and call it truth.

duh.

Well... Playoff rankings don't actually matter until the playoffs.

agree. but you don't get there unless you 've done something up the point they release them to earn it.

it's not like the spun a wheel and it landed on MSU that week.

and remember the only reason this coversation even exists is because it's mississippi state. if dan mullen was putting these same results at lsu, auburn, ga, fl, atm, tn...etc...then i'd be right there with y'all, dead set against him.

it's mississippi freakin state.

Can we stop acting like his team was ever really #1. They were ranked #1 before dropping 3 of 4 games.

Do Butch's high rankings suggest that he accomplished anything?

He managed to get a traditional SEC bottom feeder to #1, even if for a brief moment. IMO, that is an accomplishment no other HC in MSU's history has achieved, and he did it during the greatest stretch of domination the SEC West has ever experienced, not just within the conference, but nationally.

OTOH, Butch managed to get UT into the Top 10 briefly, but UT is a team that has the tradition and resources so that we as fans expect UT to be a top 10 on a regular basis.

So it is a matter of perspective. Butch gave Vol fans a brief taste of where they expect UT to be, while Mullen gave MSU fans a taste of something they had not experienced in the entirety of their program.

Almost any coach is an upgrade over what we’ve had. Does that mean they should be considered. Hell no.

OK heres how I see it:
Gruden: not coming
Frost: Neb
Kelly: FL
Franklin/Kiffin: Lol that people even mention this

So who do you want? Patterson? Whos better than Mullen? An unproven mid major? Just stirring the pot.

You’re not going to get far with me. I’m a Gruden or I’m out guy. UT needs a Saban/Alabama or Carroll/USC type of hire and that is Gruden. No. One. Else. Does it mean all other are bad? No. I just don’t think they are what UT needs to get back to competing for championships. All the grumors are getting ridiculously insane and I don’t buy most of it so it looks like I’ll be finding something else to do on Saturdays. I’m just having fun on this roller coaster until a new coach is announced.

What makes you think that Mullen is even an option? He told his team that he'll be at MSU next year.

It was actually 4 weeks at #1

Beat # 8 LSU
Beat # 6 a&m
Beat # 2 auburn

In three straight weeks..

And over 90% of his entire wins vs the top 25

And it all happened in one year.

Not impressed at all.... one hit wonder based on some underrated recruits

Mullen is a solid coach. Is he elite? No. Is he an upgrade? Hell yes.

Same was said of franklin. Miss state is harder to recruit and faces tougher competition than Vandy. Every time Mississippi state faces an sec opponent they're playing superior talent.

Meanwhile, Mullen is en route to another 9 win season at MSU regular season.....

here's what you need to ask yourself about the consideration of Mullen...

first, for argument's sake, let's assume gruden, Patterson, Franklin and Fuente are off the table, for whatever reason. IMO, i don't think Fuente or Franklin would leave, maybe you give the cursory check for interest, but i doubt either of those conversations get so far as offers to be accepted or turned down. maybe Patterson does, and one side balks. maybe gruden is just a pipe dream. whatever the reason, just assume their off the table.......

then you're down to the Mullen, Norvell, Frost, Brohm, Morris etc group....

i think it's important, at least for me, to understand that most, even those that are proping Mullen up like me, are likely going in to it with an understanding that we have/whould/will look at other candidates, likely off that list i mentioned at the top.

but if you're down to that "tier", who would you want, really to get the job out of those names? and for me, it's Frost and Mullen hands down, no questions asked, take either one.

of course, if one of those guys at the top is gettable, most (not all certainly) would say "yeah, get him".

my issue with the mullen debate is that if he's a viable candidate at that point, and he is the guy, i think many of you just need to look at him in the correct context and understand that he is a good coach, and is in no way the same as us settling for Dooley and Jones previously.

and as i've stated several times, he's not my #1 either. but i would not lose a wink of sleep if he gets the job.

that only happens if we see a guy like Norvell, Brohm etc...get the job. then i think it is safe to assume things did not go according to plan.

:bump3: so everyone is clear.

And yet you started a thread pushing Schiano with his .504 winning pct. at Rutgers. A .504 winning pct. is the very definition of mediocrity.

At RUTGERS!

Most of his losses came from building them up from their annual 2 win per season teams
