The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

Thanks guys, I'd looked into the m&p but I can't find it anywhere locally for less that $450.

I've gotten to try a smaller .45 but not as small as what I'm looking at. It wasn't too bad, more than the 21 obviously, but not too bad. One of the shops here has a indoor range and some rental guns cheap, and I got to try out a Glock 30 they had. I just gotta say being on a budget sucks.

I can't personally vouch for this particular pistol but it has many good reviews and this is such a ridiculous deal I'm close to getting one just for the hell of it.

Walther PPS M2 9mm

NOTE THE LIMITED TIME INVOLVED

The M&P's are a nice and affordable option. The 2.0's are even better. I'd go 9mm myself only due to more rounds and a bit smaller. Ballistics on 9mm newer ammo is very good. I like the Federal HST 124 +P Brass JHP. Great round for defense. Good penetration and expandability. With that said, nothing like a good ol' 45.:)

To be honest I thought the .45 shot as well as the 9 so that’s what I went w.

Picked this pre 70 series Colt up today. It was made in 1966. Came with the box and all the included paperwork from Colt. Great condition considering it’s age.
Ran some Winchester ranger and golden saber through it and it runs great.

I'm a .45 guy. Part old school, and part having seen first-hand what a .45 does in an OIS. It's a show-stopper. Yes, advances in ballistics have brought the .40 and the 9mm into the argument, but the .45 was, is, and remains a proven fight stopper. 'Nuff about that.

I have three of them. A Rock Island compact, a Glock 30S, and a Springfield 1911 Range Officer. The Springfield is my favorite, but being a full size .45, not on the concealable list. So I alternate between the RIA and the Glock. Both work at my 1 o'clock in an IWB holster. The RIA wins on the light trigger and recoil management, and the Glock wins on capacity (10+1), weight, and the sights. Usually, I carry the Glock.

The Kahr, M+P, Sig, and Springfield XD-s models are all highly rated. As is the Glock 30, 30S, 36 (take your pick). I just happened to end up with what I have, and I'm happy with it (them). Regardless of what you buy, there is no substitute for practicing under realistic conditions, like drawing from carry and firing at realistic engagement ranges (5 ft to 5 yards). I do all my self-defense practice at those ranges, without even looking at the sights. For longer shots, I have started working from a kneeling position. I'm accurate out to 15-20 yards, and lethal inside 10. Note that this is completely different from what I do with my duty weapon, where the qualification range starts at 25 yards. In truth, at 25 yards+, I'm probably coming out of the vehicle with my AR, which is another topic.

GV: On that note, I ordered the Federal XM556SBCT round, which is the same as the FBI round (just a different stock number). Also picked up another case of the XM855FF30 (30 round sealed cans) 62 gr FMJBT, which is a good armor-puncher. Just in case. My AR, which is 1/9, just seems to really like the 60-64 gr. rounds. Don't ask; I found the money. And as always, thanks for the advice.

Go Vols.

Very nice. Clint Eastwood approves of your post.

Hard to beat the Federal 230 grain HST's. Good penetration, even through heavy clothing barriers, expands to .85", and great weight retention. I found an online review where they tested the 9mm, .40, and .45 rounds for penetration, expansion, and weight retention, and the .45 HST (and +P) posted very impressive stats. Post-test photos showed all 5 rounds fired were "five-petaled death flowers".

For once, I was already carrying the right round.

Made my 3rd gun purchase today. A Glock 26 gen 4. I bdlieve that will be it for a while. My financial advisor(aka the wife) has put a hold on my credit.

Purty.

Looks to be in damn good shape as well. All original?

Let's see...

Needs a flat mainspring housing. Wilson Combat extended safety. Nice wood grips (Challis maybe?). Extended beavertail. Send it off to Wilson, C&S or Robar to get that front strap checkered. Some night sights. That's a good start.

Then we can talk about match barrel and bushing.

While tempting, I think I’ll leave this one alone.

For a while, at least.

Having owned both curved and flat mainspring housings, I certainly prefer the flat hands down (no pun intended). But I can get by with the curved if I had to.

Regardless, those factory sights gotta go, my friend. JMB was a genius, but he had to have had eyes like a hawk to have used those sights.

If you're considering being serious about your loads I'm thinking Ruger Alaskan. If you're expecting mostly tamer magnums and spcls I like the Smith's aesthetics better.

The Alaskan is one well built revolver. Not designed for everyday carry but is a solid pistol.

Do any of you own in-ear electronic hearing protection? If so, any recommendations?

I want something in-ear so I can easily use it when shooting shotguns as muffs tend to get in the way and also aren’t practical when hunting. And they would be used more frequently at indoor pistol ranges.

What I’ve seen so far can get quite expensive, but I’m willing to splurge if it's for good ones that will last me, as I have now begun shooting a lot

I don't think noise canceling devices would be worth it for that purpose. Foam ear plugs are absurdly effective.

Awesome, I love Colt .45s

Like you, I can use both mainspring housings. Surprisingly the hammer doesn’t bite the web of my hand. I put another 200 rounds of golden saber through it today, flawless function. I’m a happy camper. The sights are what they are at this point. I may have to change those, at some point. For the time being, a little red model aircraft paint on the front sight solves the problem.

Congrats ! I have the same gun. Very reliable. How strict is that advisor? She must know that you need night sights, a 19 mag with a sleeve, a few Kydex IWB holsters, and lots and lots of bullets. 😊

I do have some birthday money left over for accessories. Are the night sights worth the upgrade? $80 just seemed a little steep.(I'm new to the handgun market...) Hoping to get to the range this week.

Anyone have a recommendation in what ammo to start with at the range? Buy multiple boxes of 50 of different brands, or stick to 1 and buy in bulk?

$80 for night sights isn't a bad deal at all. Probably cost you a bit more to have them installed.

As for range ammo, buy whatever your pistols eats and go to town. I would, however, stay away from unknown reloads you find at the gun shows. If it has the tag "Bubba's Basement Reloading and Live Bait Shop" I'd probably steer clear. If you're talking about your Glock, it'll eat pretty much anything from steel case (bargain) up through the premium brands. Prvi Partizan has some high quality range ammo for good prices.

Check SGAmmo for the best prices.

Ammo: I use ammoseek.com to find the lowest prices for whatever ammo I'm looking for (.45 / 5.56). The search engine allows you to search for specific weights / loads / manufacturers, or just look for the cheapest price for a given caliber. I have done a lot of business with TargetUSASports, and so if their ammo is within a nickel a round, I'll go with them based on experience.

I run 230gr hardball (American Eagle) for practice. From what I've seen with my .45's, it hits the same spot that my defense loads (230 gr HST) do. I usually buy it in 500 round lots. 500 rounds lasts me for 2 or 3 months, depending on how much range time I get.

Sights: I would really like to figure out a way to put night sights on my RIA, but I've yet to find or figure out how it could be done. Probably not, so I'll just live with the WW2 sights that it came with.

Happy Hunting...
