The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

Yes. But at the same time, they replace it with a target crowned barrel on their post-ban models. So it's not a huge difference in the big picture.

I wasn't aware the threaded barrels were part of the ban. I don't think I got your opinion on the Wylde chambering. Is there a downside? Increased accuracy seems like the benefit.

Nah, no downside.

You only get into problems when you have a .223 chambered rifle.

Thanks guys. As you may remember, I got two of those $35 lowers and have built a pistol with that short barrel to eliminate the "constructive intent" that you guys warned me about. Now for the second one, I'm thinking about about a long range gun. Something I can reach out and touch a coyote. So I'm thinking a 18" stainless bull barrel fluted to save on some weight. A nice Giselle(sp?) trigger, and some decent optics. Any ideas would be appreciated.

18 inches should be fine depending on how far out you want to "reach out and touch." Regardless of fluting or anything else, a bull barrel is going to be heavy and you won't want to lug it around that long. Definitely take a look at the White Oak barrels.

For triggers, I'd suggest the Geissele SSA-E. Best buy for the money.

And I'd put a fixed stock on it if I were doing it. Or if you want to go adjustable, look at the Magpul UBR.

One thing I'll say in advance. Don't go cheap. You'll spend more in upgrades in the long run by trying to save a buck or two on the front end.

What GV said.

And I'd look real hard at one of WOA's SDM or SPR barrels.

Got an email from Larue about their Stealth barrels. Another option for you to consider.

5.56 Stealth Barrel | LaRue Tactical

Not meaning to step on the other chaps toes of course. Just putting it out there.

$245 for a LaRue (with the M4 ramps) is pretty attractive.

And it's probably worth mentioning that the WOA barrels, though excellent, are stainless finish which may not be to everyone's taste.

Is a bull barrel not supposed to increase accuracy too? As to weight, I carry around a Browning stainless stalker in 7MM MAG (which is no lightweight) in deer season. Do you think the weight will be comparable?

I look at the White Oak Barrels. They seem good. I want to do it right but I can't break the bank either. As to distance, I was thinking 200 yards would suffice and the occasional longer shot. Probably over 200 and the gun would outperform me anyway.

I like the idea of the adjustable stock. I've been viewing them since this thought came to mind.

I've toyed with the idea of going 300 Blackout but the ammo is much higher and availability could be an issue too.

What about the BCG? A plain mil spec can be had for $80 bucks or so but I've seen them for over $200. Is there really a big difference in the BCGs?

What's wrong with the stainless? I was leaning toward stainless.

It does, but at the ranges you are looking at, the bull barrel won't make much of a difference. 500+ yards is where it really helps. Along with the proper ammo.

See above. Any of the WOA service or match barrels will be perfectly fine for that distance.

For a semi-precision setup, I don't think you can go wrong with the UBR. Personal preference though.

It makes your AR into a semi-auto .30-30 (look up the ballistics on both)

Not much difference. Just make sure the bolt is Carpenter 158, shot peened and individually MPI/HPT tested. As well as having proper staking on the gas key.

Check Brownells, Palmetto State premium line and Bravo Company for decent deals on BCGs.
