The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

What are you guys's thoughts on barrel twist. I've heard that 1:7 is best for heavy rounds where 1:9 is better for lighter rounds. Is 1:8 a good compromise?

Also, in getting on out there, should I go longer on the barrel? I may not need over 200yrds but maybe if I were to sell it or my son want to go on out to longer distances.

Opposite... 1:7 twist for heavier grain. Mine is a 1:8 twist. But not much of a difference from a 1:9 twist at 200 yards. Which here is a really long shot. Think of a 1:8 twist is two complete rotations of the projectile before it leaves a 16 in barrel. Plenty to stabilize most bullets.

300 black out is my next one on the list as well. :)

That's what I said I thought.

Honestly, I wouldn't go lower than a 1/8 myself. And I prefer the 1/7.

1/7 will stabilize anything from 52 grains up through the 77 grains (typically the heaviest factory load you can find).

Same goes for the 1/8. It's just the availability of 1/7 that tends to draw me to it.

Is going with a longer barrel worth the trade off of having a less manageable weapon?

An 18 inch barrel will be fine. 20 is okay. Anything longer than that is meant for shooting prairie dogs.

Ammo selection is just as important as the barrel. If you pick up a match barrel and end up shooting crap ammo through it, you're not going to get good results. Black Hills and Hornady do great precision ammo in higher weights.

I knew the ammo is key. I guess the longer barrel results in a higher muzzle velocity giving a slightly better trajectory. I guess I could Google charts showing the different trajectories of different barrel lengths.

You're not really going to get much more out of a barrel over 20 inches. But it does make a normally well balanced rifle into a complete musket.

I don't think I'd go over 20 for sure. Do you think the difference in 18 to 20 is all that substantial?
