BTO wants to immediately squash the notion, but according to Basilio (as always, take with a grain of salt), Tennessee was caught flat-footed with their preparedness and response to the NIL legislation, and the timing seemed to coincide with several kids that we seemed to have the lead on stepping back and re-evaluating. And suddenly, they start taking other visits, slowing their recruitment, and entertaining offers from other schools, to the point that Tennessee no longer lead for them, and in fact, at least from a national perspective, it seemed like we trailed for them. Guys like Cason Wallace and Dillon Mitchell immediately come to mind.Wonder why Barnes has been struggling with recruiting this year?
And no, this isn’t me bashing the guy. Just seems like we’re having a down year when it comes to landing the top dogs.
How much of that is the coach’s responsibility?BTO wants to immediately squash the notion, but according to Basilio (as always, take with a grain of salt), Tennessee was caught flat-footed with their preparedness and response to the NIL legislation, and the timing seemed to coincide with several kids that we seemed to have the lead on stepping back and re-evaluating. Now, it is certainly possible that the timing of all that was entirely coincidental, and Basilio is blowing smoke. But it seems plausible enough that I won't just flat out dismiss it.

Again, I'm not saying it CAN'T be those things. I'm just saying that the alleged lack of NIL preparation COULD have been an issue, if true. And, again...I'm not saying it's true or that Basilio is to be believed. If it is true, though, the timeline aligns with those two players, specifically, stepping back and reassessing their recruitments.Or could it be Wallace was hoping/waiting for a UK offer which was/is a game changer? And Mitchell was said to be favoring FSU pretty much the whole time?
Why did we miss on Banchero? Jabari Smith? Harrison Ingram? When you are recruiting Top 25 players as a program like Tennessee you aren’t going to bat 100%, even Kentucky/Duke don’t but they’re going to hit on a much better % than we do.
It doesn’t align with either actually…NIL came out 7/1/21 and Wallace was still all Vol, it was 3 weeks later when UK offered that talk of him slowing down his recruitment came about…so which of those things aligns more? NIL release or UK offer?Again, I'm not saying it CAN'T be those things. I'm just saying that the alleged lack of NIL preparation COULD have been an issue, if true. The difference between your stance and mine is that yours is absolute while mine is fluid.
Wonder why Barnes has been struggling with recruiting this year?

So you're telling me it isn't possible that once NIL became a thing on 7/1, that Wallace didn't like the plan in place over the next several weeks? It doesn’t align with either actually…NIL came out 7/1/21 and Wallace was still all Vol, it was 3 weeks later when UK offered that talk of him slowing down his recruitment came about…so which of those things aligns more? As for Mitchell, he visited 6/29 and Russ Wood was on VQ saying he was FSU bound on 7/1.
I just don’t feel it’s likely, I suppose we could also say it’s because of COVID restrictions in Tennessee being softer so folks are turned off? Or that Dollywood raised their prices and that upset some ppl? Or that Wild Wings closed down and is now Daddy Macs? Makes about as much sense to me.
Like I said earlier in this thread, we missed on top guys last year as well when NIL wasn’t a factor, that’s going to happen when you’re recruiting against the school we are going against. The staff still did a great job of assembling a very nice 2021 class and utilizing both the transfer portal and reclassification of guys.
Unless BHH just pops off, which definitely could happen, I think he stays 2 yearsThe other thing is the 2021 class is huge. Chandler and BHH are the only one and done and guys. Then you have five guys that are projected 2-4 year players in Q, Aidoo, Mashack, Tamba and ZZ. There just isn’t a lot of room either
Well the talk into early July was that Tennessee had all the momentum and could be headed for a commitment, UK offered and all that changed…if you wanna say that was because of NIL from 3 weeks prior and not the UK offer from the day before then go ahead, I strongly disagree. So you're telling me it isn't possible that once NIL became a thing on 7/1, that Wallace didn't like the plan in place over the next several weeks?
I'm not getting drawn into a multi-page argument with you over something neither one of us can prove. I'll simply re-state my earlier claim that it COULD have been an issue. You disagree and leave, seemingly, no room for potential. That's fine. Like I said, before, your opinion is absolute and mine is fluid.
