My suggestion is get a set of top quality used clubs.

I totally agree. A person can get a set of extremely forgiving Ping i-3 OS or such as that in very good or better condition for around 200 dollars. For a beginner, they will play easier than anything new up to 500-700 dollars or so.

My buddy I play with who claims to be a 5, but I beat him 60% of the time called me up all excited about his new irons.

So we play sunday and he got the titleist blades. I was like dude you aren't good enough for these clubs. He didn't hit a solid iron all day.

I tested out those blades last week during a club fitting. After about 5 swings I handed it back to the pro and asked him why the hell I would want to work that hard.

I looked at them tonight and thought they would be fun to play with.

Then I wondered what I would use for the other 17 holes.

I'm getting the Walter Hagens tomorrow at Dicks. "Golf specialist" up there said that's what he recommends beginners. Not really worried about brands right now. I just want to have some fun and learn how to hit the ball/play the game. Maybe if I improve enough then spend some more money on certain higher quality pieces later on.

I've narrowed my next iron set down to two (for now). It's between callaway razr x tour or cobra amp. Probably be around end of month before I jump.

Those will be fine. Do yourself a favor and go take one lesson just to get some idea what a good swing feels like.

I hit the Razr last week. They were probably tied for my second choice along with Ping i20.

Mizuno JPX800s. once we got the shaft right there was no question which club was producing the best ball flight for me. It's sort of an in between club and definitely not a players iron but I'm still able to work the ball both ways so I really don't care.

Plus, I'm about a full club longer than I was last week which I think is kind of amazing. The bad news is I have to redo my wedges since the yardage gap between my pw and sw is now about 25-30 yards.

don't like the thinner face talk because of the distance issues with it. Our pro started hitting the MP 59, which is a Ti Muscle, meaning they could keep the half muscle back but adding the lighter metal let them move some weight to add a smidge of forgiveness to them. I hit the hell out of them. If you didn't swing them, you might give them a look.

I'm looking to transition away from blades and that appears to be a very good option.
