The Golf Thread

did anyone watch the Barkley experiment last night on the Golf Channel last night? Hank Haney is trying to fix his golf swing.

The commercials made the show look funny, but I really think it's going to be more educational than anything. I learned some interesting ways to consider making sure you stay in a proper swing plane and just from watching Sir Charles, I picked up on some better balance techniques, but I'm not quite sure how to explain it.

i watched this. interesting for sure. i wonder what haney charges for an hour? if he can fix sir charles, he could have me straightened out in an hour or two max. haha

We were discussing how much he charges. My buddy just went on a 3 day getaway trip to SC and we decided Haney probably charges more for one day than the whole trip cost

in Barkley's case, i'd say Golf Channel picked up the tab on the whole thing.

Obviously, and then some.

But I doubt the Golf Channel is going to make a "Hank Haney: The Doozer Project" or a "Hank Haney: The VFB Project" anytime soon.

i'd say it's high for sure, but that guy knows his stuff. it was impressive when he outlined what tiger did in a normal day of work. that is pure dedication. i would love to have the time to seriously work on my game.

yeah, my ultimate dream is to either marry a sugar momma or win the lottery and be able to devote two years to the kind of practice routine Haney was talking about for Tiger just to see what I could do.

I'm doing it. I'm retiring in a few years and taking my swing at a few years of intense golf to see if I can get to the level of making a swing at some tourney golf. It's essentially the reason I still work today.

like Nationwide? Q School?

If I can get there I will, but I'd likely go smaller in an effort to prepare for the Senior Circuit.

I'm assuming you mean you'll start out in local/statewide tourneys and hopefully move up to US Pro Golf, Hooters or Gateway?

No matter how you do it, best of luck and keep us posted. How far off is retirement and putting these wheels in motion?

Could do it now, but the opportunity this market presented is too enormous to pass up, so I'm probably 5 years away. Not to mention, this market also ate a lot of our asset values, making shutting it down now a bit riskier than a few years ago would have been.

It's really a pipe dream. I'm decent and do improve with work, but the short games those guys boast are generally otherworldly, even for the also rans.

gotta go after your dreams though. Senseless not to, providing you have the ability to try.

as long as i have been playin golf (15 yrs) i have never figured my handicap. does anyone have any ideas of how to go about that?

couple of websites out there to help, or simply join the MGA at your course and start posting scores. Just a few into it and it'll pump you out a handicap.

A quick Google search will lead you to any number of places you can do it online. A lot of them are even officially recognized by the USGA.

good deal thanks guys. as the weather warms, i am going to figure it up. i might not like the results tho.

only if you're honest about it. :)

yeah i can do that. i am not too ashamed of my scores. i rarely shoot over 100 and i think the lowest i hit last year was 88. i am probably close to average, but i have more etiquitte than most. :)

I thought that your handicap was the average of your best 3 scores or something. That's why it's rare for someone to hit their handicap because it's a representation of what they could do, not necessarily what you will.

It depends on the course rating and your scores. The course could be rated at 74 even though it's a par 72. If you average 74 there, you would be considered scratch, even though you average 2 over. The more rounds you enter, the more accurate it is, especially if you play multiple courses.

It's your best 10 scores from your most recent 20 rounds played. Everything is computed in relation to the slope and course rating of the courses that you play and plugged into a formula that gives you a handicap index.
