The Golf Thread

i'd say it's high for sure, but that guy knows his stuff. it was impressive when he outlined what tiger did in a normal day of work. that is pure dedication. i would love to have the time to seriously work on my game.

When it's all said and done, the smart money says that Haney will have Sir Charles breaking 80 consistently. The dedication and desire are there, and Barkley was an athlete (yeah, yeah, I know) at the highest level. And you know the guy can generate some SERIOUS clubhead speed, if he ever gets his swing plane remotely on track.

BPV: best of luck to you. Rhat's living the dream, seriously. You're already about scratch, right? Certainly not out of the question if you have the time and money to devote yourself to it.

Preesh. I hover around scratch most of the time. Sometimes a bit better, sometimes a LOT worse (like now).

It's likely out of the question, but I'm going to give it a swing.

PS, I don't see Barkley ever regularly breaking 80.

I agree. I think quality instruction can get just about anybody into the 80s. After that it's a managing the course, improved short game and eliminating big numbers. I have no confidence that Barkley will be able to do any of that.

Getting from 100 to 85 is a heck of a lot easier than getting from 85 to 79.

and regularly shooting below 80 means a handicap of 3-5, which he just isn't doing.

it does not matter how many times you hit it....just keep moving

haha very true. slow play drives me insane. do not be afraid to let faster players play thru. some just won't do it. its either their egos are too big or they are just idiots. our group usually wakes em up if they are playing slow...

and there are no "gimmies"

only gimmies i take are within the leather, but if i am figuring my handicap, i guess those are gone.

they said he shot regularly in the 80's or so back in 94, but to see him swing now you would never think that.

You can check with some local courses and see if the carry a handicap system.

I made it all the way up to plus 5 when I was coaching and able to play everyday. (Nevermind my course is short as hell and I've played it all my life.) I consider myself a 0 even though I still carry a +2 at the present.

I think they figured Tiger's handicap after the 2000 season and it was +9 or something unfathomable like that, considering he typically only plays the tougher courses.

When he started playing as a 76er back in Philly, they claim Barkley regularly broke 80. Not saying he will again, but you have to think that hitch doesn't show up with chipping and putting. He could actually still have that under complete control.

I'm going to bet that Barkley is a 3 putting machine.

I wouldn't gamble with the "they" making that claim.

possibly. But with as rare as I get to play, my short game is the only thing keeping my score somewhat respectable. How it stays in place, I have no idea.

complete opposite.

if i don't have it going early, i'm a mess around the greens the rest of the day. and then i try to compensate by swinging harder, and then everything starts going right. way right.

If I knew how I was doing it doozer, I'd offer advice. Chipping and putting has never been something I spend a great deal working on, but it's never been the key problem in my game either.

I will say I can't imagine being on a course without my 52*, 56* and 60*. The 56* gets the overwhelming majority of use though.

i know it seems like a no brainer, but half way through the summer last year i started using the alignment arrow on my ball. just making sure my ball is aimed on the correct line helps me tremendously.

still, there's some days where i have to make my goal not hitting the ball off the other side of the green. a change in wedges is definitely in store for this summer.

I'm the same way
For me it's the stroke off the tee
If I'm hitting fairways the confidence builds
If I'm in the schit, I'm trying to get up and down for bogey and it kills me

It's not even so much as length off the tee, but just putting it in play

I don't ever trust myself to aim the arrow correctly. I've got enought to worry about without having a nervous breakdown wondering if the logo or arrow is square to the target. When I putt, I turn the ball so that all I see is white.

That's exactly what I do.

So, are you just going off strictly instinct?

I'm going my eye having learned when the putter is aligned properly.

I realized that if I sit there and try to line the arrow up, once I get in my stance, I usually don't like it. Since I don't get to play very many fancy courses anymore, I figure out where I'm going to aim and then I can usually find a dead spot or bad divot repair within a couple of feet and I just line up towards that.
