We need to solve the tale of 2 halves problem. Both sides of the ball seemed to regress in the 2H this season.

are you thinking we haven't brought in high caliber players so far? not enough? filled the 'wrong' holes?

We had a glaring need at safety, LB, and DT last offseason and completely failed to address it.

4/5 of our big OL transfers in were backups elsewhere.

Moe was a good portal guy. So was McCoy x2, Brazzell, Joey A, and Hood. Just think we've been too passive here in general and trusting our development of HS recruits, which has been a bit hit or miss...

whatchoo think are the issues?

We only have 7 offensive linemen that see playing time. 3-4 of them arent SEC starting caliber or low end SEC starting caliber. Teams rotate DLs in and eventually talent wins out....

Same thing with our DTs, LBs, and Safeties on the other side. We are really thin at backup corner...

I used to think Heup's system was extremely challenging on OL. the tempo had to be murder.
But he has evolved his philosophy and slowed down considerably since 2021/2022. Yet, OL continues to underperfom.

Our OL does well against G5 teams and lower tier of SEC teams. But other than UGA this year and Iowa in 2023, they really havent performed well against a good defense since 22...

Do you think, in general, our team is soft (including the OL)?

If 2024 defense
Total Defense: 6th in the nation, allowing 293.2 yards per game.
Rushing Defense: 7th in the nation, allowing 103.9 rushing yards per game.
Scoring Defense: 15th in the nation, allowing 28.90 points per game.
On the other side Turnovers: 10th in takeaways per game with 2.0.

That’s pretty good and probably why we made the playoffs.

2025 defense

Total defense 61st.
And that’s where I stopped.

No.

I think we are a smidge too small on defense front 7. Mentally soft at times. But generally speaking, no...
Swain has repeatedly said he thinks the team is "soft", especially this week.

It’s a system issue. And I think the main reason is that CJH is too preoccupied with calling plays that he can’t see the little details that make the difference.
Ex: On offense it hasn’t been complimentary enough to the defense, quick scores put a tired defense back on the field, play calling becomes stagnant due to trying to run plays so quickly, OL gets worn out. Defensively, the DB’s are always going to be hunted cause teams know they have to throw haymakers to keep up the scoring pace, DL knows this so they shoot upfield trying to impact QB and lose gap integrity, LBs become the de facto run stoppers and don’t have the agility to cover.

Been waiting all morning to get the truth about Tennessee football from a Georgia fan.

A lot of what you shared is a common narrative but I don't think there is much validity considering the evolution of Heup's offense over the years.

No doubt the offense has evolved. Less wide choice. More traditional run game. But the premise is still there. Josh is too busy perfecting an offense and is missing the details that will get UT over the hump.

Name a team where the head coach is also the OC/DC and the team is in contention for a national championship. Maybe you could argue Cignetti at Indiana? But that’s more a case of a good schedule IMO.
