The divide in this country is growing, and is alarming

But all of that comes back to the perception that public education sucks BECAUSE of the presence of blacks and Hispanics such that the solution is to take your kid out of that environment.

This is an unfortunate stance.

Of course they don't. But why are they lousy?

Incompetent management. Lack of parental involvement.

If I had a child I wouldn't put them through MCS or whatever it is now since they gave up their charter to the county. The public education here is outright dysfuntional.

40% of the funds going to pointless administration rather than teachers and students? lazy parents? nah can't be. must be because we are all racists.

Take a look at the Atlanta Public School scandel. Administrators getting $500K bonuses, teachers cheated on the tests so that they could get $25K bonuses. They dont care about a reputation or the kids , they just want their bonus money and then pension

i have a friend who just applied for a vice principle job in the long beach public school system. would have paid her $95K a year. she'd be one of 3 VPs along with the distict supervisors who there are at least a dozen who make around $150k. the principle at my wife's private school barely makes 90k and she has one vp.

I agree, many people don't deserve to make that kind of money, but I'm not sure why anyone is critical of six-figure salaries for high-level individuals in education (those whom deserve it). Are you saying it's ok to make a top-level salary, as long as it's not in education?

What's the incentive to attract and retain elite people if you're not willing to pay?

Whether or not the individuals who receive this salary deserve to be in those positions is another discussion altogether (like the Atlanta example).

$95k/year seems really low for LA given the standard of living.

considering they get 80% of their last years salary for life in retirement i'm going to argue it's more than a fair wage. particurally for someone in their early 30s.

Reminds of season 4 of the Wire. I would put less on the teachers and more on the adminstration that forces the statistical benchmarks. What if it's not their bonus? What if it's their job on the line?

(As an aside, I would highly recommend the Wire. I'd say a strong theme is that metrics don't accomplish anything but political games.)

Lack of education, lack of opportunity to enter the system of making money off of business interests, whether direct or through stock or asset ownership.

A tax system manipulated to tax the poor and middle class and to encourage the flight of capital overseas, the hiding of income, etc.

I remember a number of years ago living in West Palm and a controversy erupted when several of the wealthiest people in the world, with mansions in Palm Beach, were buying art from the auction houses in New York or London and having it delivered elsewhere in order to avoid sales taxes usually running into the range of a hundred thousand dollars or so.

Imagine that -- a single purchase where the sales tax is almost 20 times the entire wealth of the median black family, avoided.

Do you not see something wrong with that?

I guess you see nothing wrong with the five people living a section 8 apt., paying no rent or bills, making 2500 dollars a month(govt asst.), not working, not to mention the big screen plasma and stealing everything they get their hands on. Don't believe me, I'll show you booking photos.

No, its that the divide and conquer strategy of the far right, using race as a proxy for almost every measure, is succeeding, at least in the short term, in that many whites that were leaning or supported Obama have bought into notion that black people and programs for the lower classes are a threat to their wealth potential.

oh jesus. you really think that the basis of all this is race? you want to argue a class struggle ok. but race? why do you assume all black people are poor?

there's simply no way to argue with logic like that.

I think it could be posited that wealthy individuals think government funded programs intended to help the lower classes not only are a threat to wealth potential but are ineffective remedies for the problems.

Wealthy individuals routinely donate private money to programs intended to alleviate problems faced by lower classes; therefore, a healthier and less mierable lower class cannot logically be reconciled with the thought that these wealthy individuals desire that the lower classes continue to suffer and see their lives further decay.

You missed the word proxy.

Its not that the far right views all black people as inherently bad, stupid, lazy, criminal (some do, I suppose, but not all).

Rather, it is that blacks represent a VERY disproportionate share of the lowest classes, prison populations, etc, that it becomes very easy for the hate machine to indirectly attack them by focusing on Acorn, "welfare moms," etc, without having to say what it's really about, which is money. Pure and simple

I don't particularly mind the upper class complaining about supporting the lower class. Its natural to some degree.

What irks me is the use of race as a convenient identifier to justify it.

So I just read thorugh 12 pages of how I'm racist? Time well spent.

So exactly who's race-baiting in this thread LG? The only one I see here is you.
