The DeSantis containment thread -- all things DeSantis go here

My kid hasn't been subjected to Harvey Weinstein/Hollywood recruitment to be homosexual. We live in Georgia. My brother lives in Tampa. He also hasn't seen this with his. It's a made up problem to pander to the cheap seats. You are usually more aware then this.
It’s not made up….. social media has given teachers avenues to express that they have these discussions with young students…. There have also been a few school board meetings that have happened over issues like this that has taken place in schools….. As bigger issue is teachers (straight and gay) trying to have sex with young students…. That issue happened at my sons school…. I wish schools…. Churches…. Sports teams could be safe havens for kids but they all seem to be filled with the wrong kind of people.

So is this law just pandering and creating a boogey man that doesn't exist?
But it does exist, thats the issue. There are more activists educators the ever. Social media shows and proves this everyday. You have Pete's husband teaching children a gay pledge to the gay flag. There have been many lawsuit filed where teacher and schools have encouraged and confused children about thier gender. Bottome line if come down to whether you believe parents or goverment have priority over thier kids. I believe parents have an overiding authority in the morals and ethics, and education of thier children. Why is that wrong?

My daughter attended Florida schools and experienced none of that either. This is just DeSantis promoting a fake boogeyman to scare the religious bible thumping portion of his base.
I don’t know if it is rampant enough to make a bill over it but it’s definitely happening.

There are no Russians invading my part of Alabama either, so that’s not rally a thing either I guess
Difference in your nonsense and the past you quoted is no one ever claimed they were.

It appears you've taken some biased articles or one off incidents and extrapolated them across the entire US 4th grade. If the curriculum was there I would likely see it

Literature I've read is that homosexuality was thought to be around 10% with bisexuality being much higher. Lumping them together is a recipe meaningless statistics.

Our understanding of sexuality has evolved. From a purely anecdotal perspective. When I was in college very few women would say they were bisexual. They all said they were straight, but in my experience it was pretty easy to talk them into sexual activity with another female. Claiming to be bisexual came with a negative connotation from many people. Not so much anymore. Women, in my opinion, are far more comfortable with viewing sexuality on a sliding scale.

Being gay was dangerous especially for high school boys. It was only 1998 when Matthew Shepard was murdered by a bunch of knuckle draggers because he was gay. So coming out now is not as dangerous because people have evolved. There are more openly bisexual men now, as well for similar reasons.

Equating something you don't agree with to something illegal and disgusting is the tactic of bigots. Czar is a prime example.

Why do we need to be discussing sex or sexual preferences period with young children?

Nobody is doing that. If a 10 year old asks about a classmate's same sex parents, I think a fine response is that two people can love each other and get married whether they are both men or women or a man and woman.

A better response would be "mind your own business" or "ask your parents".

Was that based on the curriculum?
Not sure yet we are getting information about the teacher and such. Issue is the school board is not overly forthcoming as this teacher has has many complaints...so while antidotal. It is happening and more and more often.

Irony is so ironic sometimes. Parent removed from FLORIDA school board meeting for reading from explicit book PURCHASED by School and IN SCHOOL LIBRARY. Glad I am just dealing in Strawmen here

What's young? Everyone seems to define that differently. At 10 they're already discussing it

The health class I took as a hs freshman in a Knox co school was as graphic as anything I've seen described in this new curriculum. That was over 30yrs ago

Was that a grade school book? I read the Canterbury Tales in 9th grade? I assume you would object to that as well? There were Stephen King books in my junior high library.

I've already stated I don't think we should be teaching sexuality to young children.

Then what is your opposition to this bill?

I think sex/sexual preference discussions should be avoided in schools through the 5th grade at least. Teaching how we reproduce, the mechanics of it and how to prevent it should probably start in the 7th (maybe 6th) grade as part of biology. I don't know when or even if sexual preferences should be a school topic but I do know it doesn't belong in elementary grades.

What difference does the grade make? If a parent can be censored for reading it, why in the Sam Hill should any child at any grade be reading it. Do you not see the absolute UNBRIDLED ABSURDITY of the situation? It is NC-17 in reverse. „No one above 17 admitted unless accompanied by a child“. Had the entire world gone stark raving mad?
