@NorCalVol67, staying dry on the 30-whatsit floor?
Unrelated question: since you're in Miami, do you eat Cuban food often? (not just Cuban sandwiches)
We're going to Cuba in January for the Havana Jazz Fest, and I want to make a start on getting familiar with the food, especially with what people call signature dishes. So I'll be tackling vieja ropa, empanadas filled with picadillo, and mojo sauce on apparently anything, and then I'm pretty much hmmm. As in, where do I find yuca in the wilds of WNC... Is there any food you especially like in the Cuban category?
I probably eat more Peruvian food than Cuban, but I am a fan of Cuban dishes.
For Cuban, Vaca Frita is a common one. They also do thinly sliced steak which is pretty tasty. A lot of dishes braised/stewed served with rice. Croquetas for an appetizer and of course empanadas. A lot of rice and beans and plantains. I posted a photo recently in the dinner thread of a dish I had at a restaurant in Little Havana. I don't know what it was, but it was one of the best things I have had since I have been here.
I have a couple of employees from Cuba who will bring me food. I usually don't know what it is, but it is always really good. They also bring boxes of mixed pastries for breakfast, and some of them are filled with beef, that is a bit strange at first. You may find yourself eating empanadas and croquettes for breakfast.
That sounds like an awesome trip. Drink lots of Mojitos.
