The Chicken Sandwich War

Supposedly very good. There's one here that I still haven't tried lol
Little tidbit of restaurant wars I learned today about Guthrie's because of this thread. Guthrie's would be the "original" Zaxby's. The guy that founded Zaxby's left Guthrie's to do so...and took the sauce with him. Read that he never got it exact to taste like Guthrie's, but he developed the franchise far superior to how Guthrie's was run. So, it seems Zaxby's was born from a disgruntled Guthrie's employee/higher up who couldn't get the recipe's quite duplicated, but excelled at expanding the franchise brand.

This was the store on Laurens Rd back then. 1996 era plus and minus. It burned down maybe a few years back. Not sure how long ago. Best i recall is where Haywood dead ends into Lauren's then take a right. Wasn't far down on the right. Actually it was 3 story house. Other names prior was Porches, Saturday Night. The current Zaxby's on Lauren's sits on the same location after the house was razed, from what I can dig up. It was a cool place. One of the early locations outside of GA.

Gotcha. It’s tough to casually get over that way anymore as bad as it has gotten. Woodruff road is a disaster. There use to be a Hooter’s on that corner and you’re talking about cutting back towards the zoo. That may be where they built the Willy Taco.

Gutheries on the strip was good food with questionable staff. Same concept as Zaxby's, Caine's, etc.

Haven't had Gutheries since that location closed down. I'd stop in one again for sure.

Still wish Sawyers was around. GOAT.

I remember that Hooter's, though I never went. Only been to one maybe twice. Felt like a brain dead redneck while in one. And see more at the beach anyway. Expecially South Beach. Quality of food wasn't worth the scenery. Haven't been in Greenville in quite some time. It was fairly congested even then. Haywood was always a disaster south of the mall. I would turn and go north for church into Taylors off 385, then to the mall to see what was on the clearance racks at Macy's, then back accross the border. Woodruff and Laurens has been bad since the 90's. We played church league softball at a field over in Woodruff, maybe a field at the "Y". Always picked up some really nice Hilfiger button downs and other pricey goods by watching a certain clearance rack each week. After the 3rd red pin write in price, I'd get $85 shirts for $15.

Zaxby's was a Guthrie's clone by an ex employee. Raising Cane's was also conceived by a Guthrie's employee before striking out with a co-founder. Apparently Guthrie's had leadership shortcomings or something.

Tried Jollibee in Pinellas Park first time today.

Had the Original Chicken Sandwich, Korean BBQ Sandwich, and a side order of Jolly Spaghetti.
Both sandwiches were excellent.
I still prefer CFA but these are now my second choice.
EDIT-Huey Magoo’s is #2 and Jollibee is #3
I did not enjoy the Jolly Spaghetti at all. Slight sweet taste and served cut up hot dog.

The table in the only open booth was very dirty so I grabbed napkins and wet them in the bathroom so that I could clean up.
Bathroom was not very clean either.
We were there at 2:20 in the afternoon and it was not too busy. Someone should be checking to assure that maintenance is taken care of

Super Chix is my favorite chicken sandwich. The Blackened Cajun in particular, and their fries are next level. Pretty good frozen custard too!

Hey. Don't knock hot dogs in sketti. My wife's mom would feed 6 kids off $50 a week. Sketti was one of the later in week meals so she'd have left over meats. And used that big can of $.99 Hunts sketti sauce. I've had sketti with hot dog, beef, and pork neck all in the same pot.

Your wife’s mom should get some sort of medal for getting so creative.🥇

I always wondered about this connection.

Guthrie's sauce is exactly the same as Zaxby's.

Guthrie's has a small menu but if you are getting just chicken strips and fries, its the same thing as Zaxby's

Zaxby's, Raising Caine's, and Guthries actually are all the same group. The execs of Caine's and Guthrie's are part of the original founding trio of Zaxby's. Atleast the Zaxby's and Caine's guy are. The Guthrie's guy may have just been a top exec in Zaxby's from the beginning. They all had disagreement along the way about franchising and other ways of doing business, so they both left Zaxby's at different intervals.

I haven't had Guthrie's. My last town of 16 years, and wife's home, now has one. I might check it out at Thanksgiving and see how they measure up.

Raising Caines is also almost identical as well. Sauce and slaw is same. Chicken is has less and different seasoning. Fries are just plain crinkles and more to my liking.

IMO, Zaxby's has gone downhill. Especially last 2-3 years. And over the years I kinda grew tired of the heavy seasoning on everything. After you've had different things on the menu they began tasting the same. I exempt the salads though. Still like those.

I think zaxby’s fries are the best thing they have going. Salads are decent. I like most of their stuff but it’s not my favorite.

Guthrie’s has been around since 1982. The way they tell it, Hal’s drive-in restaurant had been operating in Haleyville, AL since 1965. Hal’s oldest son wanted him to open a restaurant in Auburn. To do so, they simplified the menu to focus on fried chicken fingers. The Auburn location was a success and expansion began.

At one time, they had a Guthrie’s in Athens, GA. That’s where the daughter became a patron. She told me of Guthrie’s, but the Athens location closed in 2004, 5 years after she left.

I’ve never been interested in any of the chicken finger franchises. Twice, I had Zaxby’s zensation salads when colleagues took me to lunch there. It was OK, but didn’t inspire me to go back.
