Obviously you haven't followed UT basketball very much over the past 35 years, like I have. TBA was opened in 1987, I know I was there, where were you? Before that the Vols played in Stokley AC which was half the size of TBA. TBA was built because of Ray Mears had built a solid foundation. But, Pearl took UT to heights that Mears never attained.

Since that season UT has fired Devoe, Houston, Green, and Peterson for the same reason. None of them could fill TBA, the only coach that has managed to fill TBA night after night was Pearl. Most UT fans love and cherish the days of UT basketball under Pearl.

Bruce Pearl is Tennessee Basketball!!

How many NCAA tourney bids did Mears get UT to? How many sweet sixteen? How many elite eights? How many number 1 ranked teams did Mears beat? How many of his UT's teams were ranked #1?

Lulz, Pearl made one elite right. Like that is actually a huge accomplishment.

And had Pearl coached in Mears day, he would have made two tournament appareances (maybe three) in six years.

Being #1 for a week and beating the # 1 team in the country thrice in six years is fun, but doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things.

What's the point of even discussing Pearl's greatness vs. anybody else? Whether he's the greatest, 2nd greatest or run of the mill, he's not coming back.

That's because guys like gunner only showed up when Pearl started winning. He probably had to Google who the other basketball coaches were.

He probably thinks Pearl invented the orange jacket too.

I'm in no way discrediting Mears, he too is Tennessee Basketball, a lot of Bruce Pearl's gimmicks came from Mears. I'm just comparing their accomplishments, and IMHO, Pearl accomplished more than Mears, but that in no way is a knock on Mears.

It gets the program a ton of positive exposure which never hurts in recruiting or merchandising. A part from that, you are correct it's just bragging rights.

That's the fun that I want to return to in this basketball program, and Pearl is the Man to get the Vols back to having fun! He is the only one who has ever taken UT to those heights, so it's only logical to rehire him if he is willing and UT has an opening.

Please help me understand. Are you saying getting to the Elite Eight isn't much of an accomplishment? Is that what I am reading?

That makes no sense. If we only diccussed reality here, vn wouldn't exist. Just because you spite him doesn't mean his name and accomplishments will go away. The entire country had never seen UT basketball like they did a few years ago.
Its gone now and it sucks. I don't get calls from ny, California, even Australia talking about seeing a crazy UT team on tv anymore. So what if people talk about it or miss it. Rather do that than act like it never happened because my feelings got hurt.
Yeah, Mears was good. That was over 35 years ago.

Really?? Then why does Kentucky hang a banner from the rafters from Rupp when they get to an elite eight?

It's a big deal for any program to get to an elite eight even Kentucky. I agree with you in that its a bigger deal at UT but its still an accomplishment to be proud of at any school.

If UT does fire Martin, how many coaches with an elite eight on their résumé will even consider UT besides Pearl?
