His punishment wasn't for the violations he committed, it was because he lied over and over to the NCAA. If he would've been smart and admitted everything from the start he'd have gotten a slap on the wrist like the schools you mentioned. The reason he didn't get a slap on the wrist and why he's no longer on the sidelines is because he thought he was smarter than the NCAA and could lie to them.

The Ten Dumbest Fan Bases in America: #10 The University of Tennessee : Outkick The Coverage

Number 9 is the Dallas Cowboys. So it's out of all sports at every level. And UT is number 10. Clay Travis is actually a huge UT fan, so that's the only reason he ranked them where he did. If he didn't have that little bit of UT bias, he would have had to put the UT fanbase as top 5 haha

Clay's just butthurt that the UT fans turned on him after he started his hot tub sessions with Franklin. Pretty sad, actually.

If CCM doesn't pan out this season (and I hope he does), I'd sack him and hire Pearl back in a minute. He messed up and paid a huge price as a result. Bet he would never make that mistake again and he was the best thing to hit UT bball since Mears.

What's the difference between Pearl and pretty much every other top D1 bball coach - Pearl got caught.

The best thing for Bruce to do is move on. We all enjoyed the ride. If for some out of this world reason he did come back. If he didnt live up to the success he had before same people who wanted him back would start bashing him. Let the past be the past and respect the future.

We'll agree to disagree on this.

I've had 2 son's play D1 sports and went through the recruiting process with them both. I thought most coaches stretched the truth or painted a better picture than reality. Don't think this is a charicteristic only of coaches - its human nature to overstate the positive and deflect away from the negative. Most coaches are salesmen who sell their program. Very few people in this world are brutally honest.

Pearl lied about something so stupid that its hard to understand why he didn't simply come clean from the start, but to me I don't think he was a slimball like many of the others who constantly skirt around the edges of the NCAA. He was just extremely stupid that one time and by the time he came to his senses it was too late.

The success rate at UT for basketball coaches is really low. If CCM doesn't pan out, what makes you think his replacement will unless the AD ponies up $2-3 mil a year on an established winner? Pearl proved he could get it done and he'll come back for a lot less than $2-3 mil.

uhhhhh most coaches don't lie to their governing body. That's what this is about.

There is absolutely no way Pearl will be the HC at UT again. None.

If he had left to take another job, then I'd say there was a shot, or if he had retired and decided to come back. But he was fired over NCAA issues. There is no way the school would hire him back, and no other school would hire someone back in the same scenario.

Anyone thinking it's even a remote possibility is living in a fantasy world.

I never said he couldn't get it done. I said IF? We all enjoyed Bruce its time to move on. Plus, try recruiting with baggage.

Some people just don't get this. I doubt he ends up in the SEC period as long as Slive is in charge.

Yeah...I want to keep Martin, but since this topic assumes he's gone, I wouldn't have a big problem with Pearl coming back. I can't think of any other great replacements that would be okay with leaving their current jobs, but I'm not educated on good non-SEC coaches around the league.

Pearl lied about it because, and to borrow a quote from "Raising Arizona", he was a "repeat o-ffender". He had been guilty of the same offense (hosting juniors at his home) once before. This is why I don't buy the "it would have been a slap on the wrist" penalty if he had been truthful.

He then hosed his staff behind closed doors by negotiating himself a nice buyout with the university (though complaining behind those same doors that he didn't receive enough) and negotiating nothing of value for them. The same staff who put their own careers on the line to protect his.

He had his chance, and if he deserves another, it should be elsewhere.
