The Bruce Pearl Thread

Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

As much as I love Bruce, it would be a mistake to bring him back. Think about how other coaches will use his history against him when it comes to recruiting. Trouble with the NCAA will haunt him from now on, even if it's for stupid reasons.

Yeah, *but* even if the NCAA were to constantly ride him and even *if* other teams were to use his history against him, I'd still take him over Martin.

Then again, I'm sure other coaches use Calipari's "less-than-ethical" history aginst him as well, and he's doing just fine. Then again that is UK wehre you can sneeze and get recruits.

I know it has been said by some well respected posters that CBP will never be coach at UT again. Honestly, I tend to believe that theory. However, I'm extremely intrigued by the fact that Bruce and Tony are still in town.

Tony tweets of his love of Knoxville often, and maybe he sincerely loves the area so much that he doesn't want to leave. However, I really thought Tony Jones would get assistant coaching somewhere by now. I know he coached at Alcoa, but this is a man with head coaching experience in the SEC.

And for Bruce, does he really love his marketing job at HT Hackney so much that he doesn't want to leave town. If I were fired from a coaching job, I seem to think I would get outta town unless I had an idea that I would have a chance to get my coaching job back.

Although my better judgement says there is absolutely no way I'll ever be able to yell BRUUUUUUUUCE! during starting lineups at TBA again, I still daydream about it everytime I yawn watching our current BBALL team.

If CCM doesn't get this team turned around, things will get extremely interesting at the end of the season IMO. Will we ever see Pearl and Jones coach our VOLS again? What is VOLNATION'S opinion?

I read the board but seldom post.....also I watch games on TV and will attend 1 or 2 a year...and I'm a huge Bruce fan...my question isn't to debate his coming back rather to pose the question to those in the know would it be possible, plausible and a practical way to get the ball rolling by getting a group of like minded people to sit/stand together in the arena and yell 'BRUUUUUCE' in unison at the most effective times.....IE, get some TV coverage, press coverage and an opportunity for others who share the sentiment to know their not alone and join in...

Is this doable and or does it make sense....what if any actions would the university take....I can't imagine their being able to do anything as it would be a no win situation or am I out of touch...this is the kind of thing ESPN would love..?

Well, first I applaud your intensity. Second, forget about it. :)
GO VOLS!

At times I seriously wonder if our fanbase deserves winning sports programs. In all sports basketball, football, hell we have losers who ***** and moan over Dave Serrano, lol. Cuonzo may or may not be the answer, but a very strong argument could be made that your boy BRUUUUUUUUUCE is the reason we have Cuonzo. Think back......what coach wanted the job at the time, not knowing what the punishment would have been from the NCAA? Thank your boy BRUUUUUUUUUUUCE for that.

Fire Cheeks. I don't believe it's coincidence that our decline in sports coincides with his arrival. After canning Cheeks, bring back Bruce.

The NCAA with their uneven punishments is just asking for a lawsuit the next time they hammer someone for something they let another university get away with. So I don't see the NCAA having as much power in the future.

To answer your question. After Fulmer was fired we on several occasions at the basketball games chanted we want Gruden. We Got Kiffin. But the main point being Fulmer was already dismissed. This early in the season you do't call for a guys head even though we all almost agree we are playing our way back to the NIT apparently. While I want Bruce back and dont see it happening that our Athletic director would be scared to make that move. (risky) If we are first program to hire him back and he screws up again. Now could we be second school; to hire him back, maybe.

Are you serious? Having sexual relations outside of his marriage ( in a restaurant none the less) didn't hurt Rick Pitino. He just went on to win a National Championship. Same for Calipari at KY, he has been in trouble with the NCAA and just moves to another school ( that is guarded from the NCAA). Bringing Bruce Pearl back would be the best thing that could happen to UT Basketball to get the fn base " energized" once again. So what are the opposing coaches going to tell recruits, " don't go to UT and play for Pearl because he might have a BBQ"?

I thank Bruce for:
1. Taking us to 6 straight NCAA tourneys
2. Taking us to our very first Elite 8
3. Taking us to our very first #1 ranking in the polls
4. For making our basketball team exciting to watch
5. For filling up TBA so they could take down the stupid black curtains when only 10,000 were showing up for games

Best move Dave Hart could ever make would be to BRING BACK BRUCE!

Stopped reading after Cuonzo May or may not be the answer.

Only way that the Basketball program will ever get its fire and fan base back to top notch. I think the fan base knows how big a joke the NCAA is with the Miami and Haith ordeal. Pearl should sue the NCAA and I think that the fan base is very sympathetic with him now and it would truly be the best thing for the program and fan base.

Because at the end of the day, do you really think the donors would oppose the Pearl option any after the Miami ordeal? I don't.

If you listen to the donors talk around the 19th hole it is obvious that they want Bruce back at the helm.

Hard to believe this is a program that was once ranked no. 1, however briefly, and went to six straight NCAA tourneys. Now, where are we at? Making the NIT only to lose in the first round of it, playing weaker schedules only to have more losses, and playing a boring, unattractive brand of basketball. Cuonzo is Wade Houston without Allan Houston for a son.

As I said before Pearl was fired. The trouble with change is that you always know what you are losing, but not what you are going to get. Three years in we still are getting our butts kicked by mediocre mid majors, but just wait till next year. I wonder who we will blame the losses on now that we have our best player back.

Not even close.

While Cuonzo hasn't met expectations he's not destroying UT basketball.

I agree. You also left out that we won the preseason NIT.

I'm still confused why it's ok for Rick Pitino and John Calipari to lie but Bruce Pearl does and gets made out to be the worst person ever?
Those guys get the basketball version of the Bama treatment from the NCAA, look the other way. Bruce did make himself out to be a hypocrite though. That's never looked upon favorably.

Looks to me like Counzo is doing a pretty good job of showing recruits that if they choose Tennessee they have no chance at going dancing in the NCAA.

Heh...wouldn't consider being a bubble team no chance.

Under Cuonzo we have a better chance of making the tourn. than a Houston team winning 5 games.
