Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

I think the line between Pearl and Williams, Coach K, Self, etc. is relatively thick.

I do think there is also a difference in Hall of Fame coach and great coach. Winning percentage, tourny appearances, number of 20 win seasons would be enough to classify him as a great coach.

This same group that denigrates pearl thinks that Painter with his 20 win average should be in the NCAA Hall of Fame and pearl done a lot better career wise both here and before he got here.

And yet he had TENNESSEE in the Elite 8 and actually ranked NO 1...both accomplishments were the FIRST in the History of Tn BBALL.....

If you think that Self and Williams haven't done something on the down low then I have ocean front property in Montana for sell......

Yet they haven't been fired for misconduct...

He was fired for lying and the ncaa forcing our hand not for any other reason.

Which is misconduct in respect to being a major D-I head coach. Regardless, he made virtually the worst possible decisions in the situation that he got himself in to. Regardless, a great coach could have handled it with much more poise, and could have easily not gotten fired for it.

I think his situation was different than a regular great coach bc he had been black balled from moving up in the coaching profession and overreacted due to his own fears..... Just a guess on my part though.

Do you not remember the throw away phones and hundreds of extra calls/texts to recruits?

Pretty sure that goes under the cheating category in recruiting.

See here is where I think the legend is bigger than what really happened......he didn't make hundreds of extra calls......the staff made between 90-100 extra calls over a two yr period which avgs about 4 a month....we caught it and self reported the secondary violation.

That's valid, but he still could have handled it better and not lose his job at UT (in all likeliness anyway).

Don't mean to sound hateful towards Pearl, because I'm not. I just don't share the belief that he's the only coach that will ever have a chance at being successful at UT.

It will be awesome if Zo can stay competitive here. If he ends up not sucking, I think he has an opportunity to make his legacy here (a good one lol).

That too, plus the contact with with the recruits days before he was canned. Seemed like he went out of his way to get in trouble.

Once again legend not based in reality.....we were accused of.violating the bump rule days after Pearl became emotional on tv......everyone made a huge deal about it......Tennessee fought it and it was proven that it was not a violation.

Pearl is definitely my favorite coach since I have been old enough to watch UT basketball bit nothing would make me happier than for Zo to become my favorite UT coach......I have my doubts about him but I hope he proves me wrong..

My sentiments, exactly.

He didn't cheat to win at UT unless u count having underclassmen eat a burger as cheating.

Yep. Recruiting violations are cheating. He was trying to get an edge on personnel coming here. And the lying about it afterwards is where UT really got hammered because of dear Brucey. Good riddance to a self promoting lying jerk. Let his next place of employment put up with his crap, we don't need him representing our university.

I couldn't remember the exact amount, but knew it was many. I also don't remember us self reporting it, I remember that being something that turned up during the investigation after the NCAA had first stepped on campus.

All my point was, was you were implying all he did as far as wrong/cheating was have a BBQ. That's not the case, the extra calls/texts, and use of throw away phones is blatant disregard to the rules and a perfect example of cheating.

He wasn't trying to get an edge. All the kids there were already committed to him at the time. Selby, Craft and McRae. What made it a violation at the time was that they were all Juniors in highschool. Not Seniors. The restrictions of Juniors I think has been changed since he committed the violation. If he turned the violation in himself it would have been the same as you driving 57 mph in a 55 mph road. He got fired for lying period. Nothing else.

Edit: He really didn't even get fired for lying. UT decided to keep CBP after he lied. He got fired because of his inability to recruit for 3 years because of the showcause penalty.

Don't agree. Juniors are not signed recruits so even though they were "commited" to UT, they were not contract bound until they signed their Letter of Intent. So Bruce's BBQ was an attempt to further solidify their coming to UT. An illegal recruiting tactic (at the time).

As for the true reason for Bruce's departure, I think UT canned him bacuase they never got the truth out of him. There was always more details after he "clarified" his positions. Be it BBQs, cell phone calls, or running into recruits by chance in a school hallway.

It was what you call an "illegal" recruiting tactic, but one that if self reported would have not been an issue. It's such a non issue that it is now not "illegal". There were 3 "committed" recruits at his house. All were either on unofficial or official visits to UT. The BBQ did nothing to help solidify keeping them. It was just a dumb move to not report it. Not to not have it altogether. Bruce admitted to the lie. The cell phone calls were self reported (still no big deal - all major universities self report excessive phone calls from time to time) and he was cleared of the inadverted bump rule while watching a recruit at the basketball game. UT had made a choice to keep CBP after he admitted he had lied. Because of the increased negative press and the expected 3 year show cause penalty, UT fired him. Hamilton knew that he could not have a basketball coach that was unable to recruit for 3 years. Which brings up that if it wasn't for Hamilton, none of this probably would have happened in the first place. He was by far the absolute worst athletic director in UT history.

Can you find proof of the throw away phones.....I tried out my Google and all I could only find the 96 phone calls that were self reported.....that's not a very big amount to go through the trouble of throw away phones.

Then we will eventually have to fire coach Zo and will not be able to hire another coach in the entire country bc every coach in America has or will commit a secondary violation.

The phone calls were self reported during the NCAA investigation of the whole UT athletic department. Why was the athletic department under scrutiny and being investigated? Not because of Pearl. It was because of the reclessness of Kiffin and his staff.

I'm not saying that Pearl is a bad person. Yes, it's crazy that he basically got fired for having a BBQ.

BUT

There's a reason UT paid him a ridiculous amount of money. There are a lot of responsibilities as a head coach. As Bravo keeps saying, it would have just been a slap on the wrist - yes, it wasn't a huge a deal. But Pearl handled the situation TERRIBLY. He made bad decisions, it bit him in the ass, and he was deservedly fired. The fact that Pearl couldn't come out on top with the decisions he made really speak to his character as a coach.

Check out who Bruce lost too his last year...I'll wait

Pearl handled the 1 minute situation where he lied terribly. After that I thought was handled like a man. He manned up and admitted himself publicly that he lied and what he lied about. He answered every question and took full responsibility for the whole thing over and over again. Hopefully, one day the entire truth will eventually come out on the incident. Pearl took every bit of the blame, but was not all to blame himself. The administration was at fault to some degree. Pearl was not the first to lie about the picture. One of his assistance lied about it first and Pearl helped cover it up. UT's lawyer that was over the NCAA investigation had the picture for almost a week and knew that it was going to be covered in the investigation. He only presented it to Pearl and the staff minutes before they were to meet with the NCAA. The whole thing was very unavoidable.

I remember that term being used, think govolxtra had it in their articles but not positive.

I googled and tried to find it but couldn't.....,I wonder if that was just something added by the people that hated pearl on this site.

It was in a few articles, I promise, but thats really not even the point. The only point I was making was in reference to your implication the only cheating pearl did was BBQ gate, that's false.

He, and his staff, contacted recruits more than the permissible amount by NCAA rules. Also, there was lodging approved and paid for by members of his staff that were NCAA violations. They basically were paying for an extra night or 2 of te recruits visit instead of just the allowed 48 hour window.
