I do think there is also a difference in Hall of Fame coach and great coach. Winning percentage, tourny appearances, number of 20 win seasons would be enough to classify him as a great coach.
And yet he had TENNESSEE in the Elite 8 and actually ranked NO 1...both accomplishments were the FIRST in the History of Tn BBALL.....
If you think that Self and Williams haven't done something on the down low then I have ocean front property in Montana for sell......
He was fired for lying and the ncaa forcing our hand not for any other reason.
Which is misconduct in respect to being a major D-I head coach. Regardless, he made virtually the worst possible decisions in the situation that he got himself in to. Regardless, a great coach could have handled it with much more poise, and could have easily not gotten fired for it.
Do you not remember the throw away phones and hundreds of extra calls/texts to recruits?
Pretty sure that goes under the cheating category in recruiting.
I think his situation was different than a regular great coach bc he had been black balled from moving up in the coaching profession and overreacted due to his own fears..... Just a guess on my part though.
That too, plus the contact with with the recruits days before he was canned. Seemed like he went out of his way to get in trouble.
That's valid, but he still could have handled it better and not lose his job at UT (in all likeliness anyway).
Don't mean to sound hateful towards Pearl, because I'm not. I just don't share the belief that he's the only coach that will ever have a chance at being successful at UT.
It will be awesome if Zo can stay competitive here. If he ends up not sucking, I think he has an opportunity to make his legacy here (a good one lol).
He didn't cheat to win at UT unless u count having underclassmen eat a burger as cheating.
See here is where I think the legend is bigger than what really happened......he didn't make hundreds of extra calls......the staff made between 90-100 extra calls over a two yr period which avgs about 4 a month....we caught it and self reported the secondary violation.
Yep. Recruiting violations are cheating. He was trying to get an edge on personnel coming here. And the lying about it afterwards is where UT really got hammered because of dear Brucey. Good riddance to a self promoting lying jerk. Let his next place of employment put up with his crap, we don't need him representing our university.
Bravo
Don't agree. Juniors are not signed recruits so even though they were "commited" to UT, they were not contract bound until they signed their Letter of Intent. So Bruce's BBQ was an attempt to further solidify their coming to UT. An illegal recruiting tactic (at the time).
As for the true reason for Bruce's departure, I think UT canned him bacuase they never got the truth out of him. There was always more details after he "clarified" his positions. Be it BBQs, cell phone calls, or running into recruits by chance in a school hallway.
I couldn't remember the exact amount, but knew it was many. I also don't remember us self reporting it, I remember that being something that turned up during the investigation after the NCAA had first stepped on campus.
All my point was, was you were implying all he did as far as wrong/cheating was have a BBQ. That's not the case, the extra calls/texts, and use of throw away phones is blatant disregard to the rules and a perfect example of cheating.

Can you find proof of the throw away phones.....I tried out my Google and all I could only find the 96 phone calls that were self reported.....that's not a very big amount to go through the trouble of throw away phones.
I'm not saying that Pearl is a bad person. Yes, it's crazy that he basically got fired for having a BBQ.
BUT
There's a reason UT paid him a ridiculous amount of money. There are a lot of responsibilities as a head coach. As Bravo keeps saying, it would have just been a slap on the wrist - yes, it wasn't a huge a deal. But Pearl handled the situation TERRIBLY. He made bad decisions, it bit him in the ass, and he was deservedly fired. The fact that Pearl couldn't come out on top with the decisions he made really speak to his character as a coach.

I googled and tried to find it but couldn't.....,I wonder if that was just something added by the people that hated pearl on this site.
