There is a lot of talk on here about "when" and "why" TN became relevent in the hunt for the SEC/NC. Was it when Fulmer took over? Was it because of Cutcliffe's offense? Was it because of Chavis's (past is seems) defenses? Or was is Fulmer's ability to recruit outside of the state? Are we all forgetting what is probably the main reason all of those things happened?........PEYTON MANNING. Peyton came early in Fulmer's career and that clearly led to his ability to achieve early success. Recruiting sure wasn't a problem after his freshman year for receivers....."Oh, by the way, we have a guy named Manning that will be throwing the ball to you." I grew up in TN and have, by the grace of God made it back here, and have been a life long fan of UT football. But there's no one out there that can honestly say that his prescence at UT didn't take us to the next level. A really awesome 'Husker team and dropped passes by receivers are the only thing that kept him from having a NC in '97. We all know he got robbed of the heisman. Does anyone take that trophy seriosly anymore since '97? Coaching changes might solve our problem, but probably not. But to argue about Fulmer's ablility to take this program to the ultimate level is pointless. It was Peyton, and what he brought to the program. Made it EASY to recruit.....IN ANY STATE. Made an OC's job EASY....let your ace air it out. Make's the defense's job easier. Parity is the new "problem" for teams, but the teams with REAL playmakers still win. And REAL playmakers bring in more playmakers.
