This has been blown out of porportion... It's really no big deal and doesn't even concern the coaches.. We are fine.. This was another sabotage by the great unknown..

I can't beleive people are buying that credit card lie. How would anybody be able to tell that it was "purchased" by a UT football credit card on the spot, unless they had a receipt or something, or the credit card had a big orange T on it that said Tennessee Football credit card. It's a little silly if you ask me. I wouldn't be surprised if Lattimore, who is considered to be a USC lock, had something to do with this. Speaking for his teammates like that smells a little fishy.

As a South Carolina fan, I have to say it smells fishy to me that a major public media installation is announcing that the NCAA is approaching people directly and asking questions concerning a specific school's recruiting practices after the regular season and before signing day. It also seems to target that particular university (in this case, the Vols) as a disruptive force to recruiting efforts. I dunno, if I was Lane Kiffin, I'd be pretty PO'd about all this going on when it is, and I hope that in the next day or two, for the sake of the Vols, that the university issues a few PR statements for damage control before this ludicrous attack is allowed to spin out of control more than it already has. Obviously someone is talking somewhere andthey've caused a pretty decent hiccup in the state of things.

Not that I like the Vols or anything... I hate pretty much anything Orange. But jeeze. This stands out as a personal or targeted attack even to me. Perhaps one of the employees that's recently left decided to stir some stuff up..

If Florida Fans can read the original quote without a Tutor, I said Tennessee or any other University. To answer your question, NCAA has a duty to investigate yes but doing it during the recruiting period and trying to influence recruits to go somewhere else is WRONG. It will be interesting if these recruits change their committment to a certain University.

There is no way anybody could tell it was Kiffin's credit card. To think that Kiffin would put his credit card in the hands of college students is preposterous. I'm sure Layla would be concerned if she saw a motel room and alcohol purchased in South Carolina. It's just an ugly rumor.

It is a good thing it was charged to "Kiffens" credit card, Lane KIFFIN must be happy that bit of news came foward and got him off the hook.

Don’t know about you but when I was that age the possibility of loose girls was an attraction rather than detraction.

The sad part is that most of it is all speculation at this point. The NCAA has what it feels is info that might merit some investigation into whether the info presented to them will equate into something or not.

We know that the NCAA is involved and the school is aware and apparantly working with them. No one knows all the facts or what exactly happened. Some reports have indicated several hostesses involved with several different recruits from different states. Even the ones NCAA have talked with might no longer be involved. Fans need to sit back and wait. No need to get to worried about it. I have not seen one recruit jump ship yet that was mentioned so they are not worried.

The main probelm is the NCAA. They are a joke with no one to monitor what they do. They make up the rules as they go along and I think CLK challenged them in the spring and they want to get even. He stood up to them and they did not like it. No matter what happens nothing to lose sleep over right now.

A little context on Hostess-Gate

Submitted in no particular order...

1) The phrasing of the distance of the trip these young ladies supposedly took is made to make it seem longer than it actually is. "Nearly 200 miles" also could describe the distance between Knoxville and Nashville.

2) Every college football team in every major conference has "hostesses". This isn't some invention of Lane Kiffin and Ed Orgeron.

3) Speaking of Kiffin, this is only a big story because of his past track record of talking smack and stirring up attention since being hired to coach the Vols.

4) Marcus Lattimore, the only recruit quoted in the NY Times story, also was one of the prospects involved in the rolling of Toomer's Corner down at Auburn, which resulted in secondary violations against the Tigers. Kudos to Friend of the Blog Wes Bunch for calling that one to my attention.

5) If the current Tiger Woods story tells us anything, it's that the young ladies who are part of this program can expect their personal business to get slathered across the Internet. And that's too bad.

We'll have to see where things go from here, but I don't see how this would constitute anything above a secondary violation.

Institutional control comes into play because this would involve lack of control or oversight by the university. There do not have to necessarily be any specific violations by the football coaching staff. If the suspicions raised by the article are true, and if university funds were expended, then it was organized and administered by an official university body that assists in the recruitment of football players. The hostess group no doubt has a faculty sponsor. If travel expenses were paid, someone had to authorize those expenses. Not only is the faculty sponsor accountable, the person they report to, all is also accountable as far as the NCAA is concerned. Since it involves the recruitment of athletes, the AD is certainly accountable, and maybe even more than Kiffin.

I wouldn't travel 200 miles to see my HS alma mater play football. I don't understand why so many people seem to think that it's not unusual for college girls to drive 200 miles, at their own expense, to see a high school football game involving high schools that they did not attend. For those of you who think this isn't unusual, have you or any of your buddies ever done that?

I drive nearly 400 miles each way to come see the Vols play. When I was living in Knoxville, I had a girlfriend in Nashville and almost every weekend one of us would drive nearly 200 miles to see the other. If, as Rivals Radio is reporting, the hostess was dating Brandon Willis, that wouldn't seem very unusual to me at all. Just because some NYT writer living in Manhattan thinks driving 200 miles would put you at the edge of the civilized world doesn't mean people in the South don't do that kind of thing all the time. And don't even get me started on how far they'll drive in Texas to see a HS football game . . .

Everybody is pointing the finger at Slive and Meyer, But I got a sneaking suspicion that the 'ol ball coach may have finger prints on this one but im just speculating. Either way, something smells fishy and its not an overworked hostess.

No really, he's telling the truth. I heard about that too. It's why Charlie Strong is jumping ship to go to Louisville. Expect this to break big in the next few weeks.

Barnhart says that UT could be in some serious trouble. He posted this on the ajc forums....

"I didn’t comment on the Tennessee situation in this morning’s blog because I wanted to wait and make some phone calls. But at this point I will say this. If what’s in Pete Thamel’s story turns out to be true, and he is a damn good reporter, then Tennessee will be in big trouble. There was a reason the NCAA eliminated “hostesses” several years ago. It was because of abuses like the ones described in the NYT story. Everybody knows the rule and there is no gray area in the rule.
Tennessee has to understand that the recruiting of the Brown kid from Wichita sent up all kinds of red flags. No one at the NCAA has told me this, but you have to believe they have been watching since that kid signed with Tennessee.
Stay tuned. This could get interesting."
