Tariq Owens

I agree, don't see Owens putting on 50+ pounds, but jmo. Like I said the other day, I think Varnado is a decent comparison and we would be ecstatic if he could become that. Varnado only weighed about 210lbs and similar height, but was one of the best shot blockers to play in the SEC.

He's listed on the roster at 205. where did 175 come from?

With his length and quick hop I think he has a higher ceiling than a lot of guys, with trouble gaining weight. I still believe he can put on 25-30 while he's here. His offensive game is questionable right now, but his rebound and shot contest is ready go go. And I'm not saying proper execution of a block out isn't important but I've seen guys overcome it by being long, quick and 6'9-6'10.

At the risk of sounding like a total sheep I do think CDT demands more consistent effort from his players. Which could provide more production earlier on. jMO

Continuing my comparison of Owens to Varnado...JVs freshman year he averaged 13mpg 5ppg 4rpg 2bpg, so while very thin and not a guy getting major minutes, you could see the potential. I think you could see very similar numbers across the board for Owens as Varnado had his freshman year.

Love that comparison and would hip bump my Meemaw if he had half of Vanardo's production, this yr.

They both came into college with a VERY similar build and style, Varnado never got "big" went to the draft at 210lbs, but he was effective as heck in the SEC at 205-210, think Owens can definitely get there by year 2.

Hopefully McKnight gets cleared so Owens can learn behind him for a year, play 10-15mpg, and take over next year.

A lot will depend on what kind of game Owens develops too. If he develops a SF type offensive game with some perimeter ability, it will allow him to be effective at a lighter weight. 175 is rail-thin, but if he has any ball-handling skills and a decent jumper, he can maybe be effective away from 3 feet too while working on a post game and gaining weight/strength. Defensively, his bread will likely be buttered as a weakside help defender who can swat shots on the backside of the zone. Even at 205 lbs, he'll get bullied in the paint by someone like Randle or Stokes straight up, but hopefully the zone will help mask his weight/strength deficiency, and he can be used as a freelancer in the paint to block and redirect shots.

All that is best-case scenario, and Jarvis Varnado is a good comparison to what we should hope for from TO.

We'll see if Owens can put on similar weight Faried did but also Owens is 4 inches taller and seems like he has leaner frame (similar to Jordan McRae). Ofc all my opinion, but I can't see Owens bulking up widely in the next few years. Hope I'm wrong.

IMO with all the resources UT has I think Owens will be able to gain weight. 6'10.5" no way I can not see you being able to get to 230 LBS in time. With the strength and conditioning programs I think he will get there. Most freshman need the confidence and right situation to thrive. I think CDT has that. Also Owens can stretch the floor 15-18 feet he has a consistent mid range game. He get stronger and gain the weight he can be a real match up problem. Can you imagine a 6'10" forward being able to go inside and out and defend the way they say he can NICE. I'm hoping so like the rest :good!:

Doesn't really have to "gain weight " as he has to get stronger...getting stronger is better for him

I respectfully disagree. If he doesn't get stronger AND gain weight, he will be too easily pushed out of position. Stokes would easily wedge him way away from the basket with his leg!
However, given a choice between the two, I would agree about it being strength.

Tariq Owens gained 10 pounds in 30 days. Let's go VOLS!!! That's great start because there was concern if he can gain weight. Arms look a lot bigger from earlier pictures.

How can you tell? lol

Anything is an improvement all the freshmen came in undersized seeing all of them get bigger and stronger is a plus for them this season. I'm happy that he showing signs that he can get bigger. Just trying to stay positive and support the program. Seems like CDT and staff got them boys heading in the right direction.

Absolutely. I was just messin. Hey I'm just happy to see the guys doing arm curls instead of supporting 300 lbs laying on their crotch. I'm sure that exercise has a purpose but all I see is the downside. lol

I envision a Marcus Haislip type future for this kid. I hope he ends up being that type of above-the-rim player on both ends of the court.

His frame reminds me of Isaiah Austin but from his highlights, his game does make you think of Haislip. He looks quick off the floor and competes around the rim. If he comes out of the gate contributing this year that would go a long way in exceeding expectations.

Doesn't look nearly as skinny in this picture vs my earlier impressions.
