Tariq Owens

Villanova, UCONN and Georgetown?

Would love to see where you got that those schools offered because not a single outlet ever reported that.

TIA
Look on hoyas repot last year Tariq Owens one of the Georgetown Hoyas recruits. Don't remember the kid name he was a top 100 kid that committed durning the CUSE vs Hoyas home game from North Carolina. Owens played the same position. We are aware that programs recruit multiple kids at the same position so if they don't get one they have a shot at the others. UCONN came on real late after Tennessee. Villanova was around since Owens Junior year. There are reports of Owens going on and Unofficial to Villanova last year. One of the other top kids in 2013 from Maryland Josh Hart who played on a USA Team with Owens is at NOVA currently now. Owens did not have a shortage of schools. I follow all the high schools sports and top prospects in the our area for basketball. I have kids at Maryland, Nova, UNLV, Tennessee, to follow because I've seen them come up in our area. Very exciting to see them reach this point. Out of all of them Owens maybe the one with the biggest upside far as ability and ceiling to become really really good.

Thanks for the insight, however I could sit here and say all those things about Derek Reese, until you show me a formal offer was reported then it doesn't mean much.

Shouldn't be a problem

Hopefully he's at least 200 by the season

Not sure how doable 25lbs is in 4 months, but would be a heck of a job by the staff. And I mean 25 good pounds lol, I've got no problem adding 25lbs, but I wouldn't be in "basketball shape" after either.

BTW, anything in that Bacon article on VQ noteworthy?

He is super skinny but has a long wingspan. He made clean block shots during the pick up game.

Holy crap that is skinny. Red shirt. I'm 5'11 and 185 and Im not exactly heavy.

The best prispect is that he has had poor nutrition and will bulk up on the training table. Otherwise this guy will get killed down low.

What's gonna be scary is if McKnight doesn't get cleared...

Hate to think about that!

I envision us being a bit like South Carolina the last few years under Frank Martin, he cleaned house and brought in guys willing to work, but were unfortunately a bit undersized. He had to play them cause there weren't many other options, they played hard and caused some teams some issues, but struggled as well.

McKnight getting cleared is huge, already hate the fact that possibly our starting PG and C haven't even had a single practice or workout with the rest of their teammates, not ideal.

Not sure about the poor nutrition. He's been at prep school for a year and is a year older than most Freshmen. I'm thinking he is just skinny and will probably always be skinny. If he can get up to 195-200 he can be useful. He reminds me some of former Purdue player JaJuan Johnson. Johnson came in skinny, and ended skinny, but added strength and ended up being an All-American and a first round pick. Owens just needs to develop a good midrange game and use his athleticism on defense and the boards.

An interesting name that I think is a good comparison and I hadn't thought about previously, Jarvis Varnado. He came out of high school at 6'9" 180lbs, he never got huge, entered the NBA draft at around 6'10" 210lbs.

Owens has the advantage of already being a solid inch taller than Varnado was, and also the top notch nutrition staff at Tennessee which will put him in a good position to add 5-10 pounds very quickly.

Hoping the Tyndall eye holds true and his success at building men continues.

Kenneth Faried was an energetic all-state center from New Jersey, but at 6-6, 182 pounds and too weak to bench press 185 pounds more than once, he projected out as no team's big man. Plus, he did not qualify academically until his final attempt. Demonte Harper, who was even skinnier, was a recruited walk-on out of the Nashville area, where his career at Whites Creek High School was overshadowed by Wil Peters, who went on to play at Tennessee State, and Jamie Graham, who played football and basketball at Vanderbilt. "Four years later, you've got the best guard in the league, who was a recruited walk-on," Tyndall said, "and you've got the best player in the league, who had one scholarship offer. "By the time (Faried) was done, he gained 50 pounds. He was 232 and benched 335. He was a second-team All-American and a first-round (draft) pick."

We'll see if Owens can put on similar weight Faried did but also Owens is 4 inches taller and seems like he has leaner frame (similar to Jordan McRae). Ofc all my opinion, but I can't see Owens bulking up widely in the next few years. Hope I'm wrong.

I agree, don't see Owens putting on 50+ pounds, but jmo. Like I said the other day, I think Varnado is a decent comparison and we would be ecstatic if he could become that. Varnado only weighed about 210lbs and similar height, but was one of the best shot blockers to play in the SEC.
