Sounds like he's a great guy, is very well-like by Highschool coaches and will be a great asset in recruiting.....but can he be an outstanding coach at the SEC level which is what we badly need right now. Nobody knows right now because he's never done it. Fingers crossed.
There are about a dozen or so posters on here who are never impressed with anything about Tennessee sports. Ignore them and move on. Swain really tries to stir the pot because that is the only thing he does well. Of all the bad sports show hosts, he is close the the bottom, just ahead of Will West.

There are considerably more posters that view everything Butch does as sacrosanct, and touched by Providence, refusing to view anything he does with a critical eye based on the facts. It's the difference between unconditional support for the coach, and a desire to see the best for the program no matter who leads it.
There is nothing wrong with questioning this or any other hire being made, and fairly gauging the shortcomings we see.
Hopefully he's such a good recruiter, that the OL will be full of studs who don't need any coaching.
That seems to be Butch's MO. It's a bold move Cotton...
He makes an interesting point. Wells choice is a bit underwhelming. Needed further infusion of new blood and another top recruiter. Not sure what Wells brings other than familiarity and continuity....and given the OL performance the last couple of years, I have a hard time seeing those as positives. In any event, it's the call of the head coach. His job.
The good news for Wells is that it is now his job alone and he can prove the doubters wrong.
Hopefully, he coaches up what he currently has and uses his connections in middle Tenn to bring in a good recruiting haul next Feb.

He may be bad but that doesn't make him wrong on this one. Other top ten teams go for the best and the Vols hire Olympic coordinators and promote quality control guys from within. Some good moves were made on the D side but the O side is severely lacking.
Haha Boro.
Goes on rant about negative posters "fairly gauging"
Then proceeds to declare we better hope they don't need coaching, before having any results.
Bro, I wanna buy you a beer and maybe an ice cream, we gotta lighten you up a bit .:hi:

My first response was to someone saying that some people just want to complain. My counterpoint was that some others just want to celebrate everything he does no matter what the optics are. There is a faction that believe "if it's Orange it's above reproach".
My second point was to acknowledge his recruiting chops. Seems that that is the real benefit of the hire, since nobody knows what kind of OL coach he'll be based on...well, anything. Hopefully he'll bring in a legion of students O linemen and Butch will look like a genius.
Not sure where the two points correlate...But thanks for thinking of me.
No correlation between suggesting being negative is "fairly gauging" and then saying hopefully (with this hire) they won't need any coaching?
Just didn't seem like a 'fair gauging' to me but an obvious misunderstanding on my part I guess.
