Sounds like he's a great guy, is very well-like by Highschool coaches and will be a great asset in recruiting.....but can he be an outstanding coach at the SEC level which is what we badly need right now. Nobody knows right now because he's never done it. Fingers crossed.

Oh I 100% agree on that, no idea until it happens. But I listed the reasons I was excited, seems we've had a bit of trouble in state as of late, lol take any help we can get.

There are about a dozen or so posters on here who are never impressed with anything about Tennessee sports. Ignore them and move on. Swain really tries to stir the pot because that is the only thing he does well. Of all the bad sports show hosts, he is close the the bottom, just ahead of Will West.

There are considerably more posters that view everything Butch does as sacrosanct, and touched by Providence, refusing to view anything he does with a critical eye based on the facts. It's the difference between unconditional support for the coach, and a desire to see the best for the program no matter who leads it.

There is nothing wrong with questioning this or any other hire being made, and fairly gauging the shortcomings we see.

Hopefully he's such a good recruiter, that the OL will be full of studs who don't need any coaching.

That seems to be Butch's MO. It's a bold move Cotton...

He may be bad but that doesn't make him wrong on this one. Other top ten teams go for the best and the Vols hire Olympic coordinators and promote quality control guys from within. Some good moves were made on the D side but the O side is severely lacking.

We have one stud coming in. We'll see how good this hire was early on with OL play.

Goes on rant about negative posters "fairly gauging"

He makes an interesting point. Wells choice is a bit underwhelming. Needed further infusion of new blood and another top recruiter. Not sure what Wells brings other than familiarity and continuity....and given the OL performance the last couple of years, I have a hard time seeing those as positives. In any event, it's the call of the head coach. His job.

At this point, it is clear that Butch values that more than anything else.

The good news for Wells is that it is now his job alone and he can prove the doubters wrong.
Hopefully, he coaches up what he currently has and uses his connections in middle Tenn to bring in a good recruiting haul next Feb.

I think they will probably add some QC staff. And we can go back to worrying about the AD hire.

Refusing to view anything he does with a critical eye?

Why exaggerate the truth when the truth fits your point?

Second guessing those in charge is our wheelhouse, especially when we are in the loop.

Are you in the loop?

That coordinator set records with his offense.

My first response was to someone saying that some people just want to complain. My counterpoint was that some others just want to celebrate everything he does no matter what the optics are. There is a faction that believe "if it's Orange it's above reproach".

My second point was to acknowledge his recruiting chops. Seems that that is the real benefit of the hire, since nobody knows what kind of OL coach he'll be based on...well, anything. Hopefully he'll bring in a legion of students O linemen and Butch will look like a genius.

Not sure where the two points correlate...But thanks for thinking of me.

I was once given some beer flavored ice cream.
Let's just say, two rights can make a wrong.

Wells had the ties to mid state we need. With the misses in 17 theres no way Butch let him leave. Read the article on VQ aboutbhis mod state ties. Recruiting along will pay off in long run

As a kid I was given Jack & Coke flavored cardy. When I got older it became my drink of choice, well after the first one I move on to Jack & Cup and then Jack from Bottlle.

No correlation between suggesting being negative is "fairly gauging" and then saying hopefully (with this hire) they won't need any coaching?
Just didn't seem like a 'fair gauging' to me but an obvious misunderstanding on my part I guess.

I wouldn't say I'm "impressed" by it either. The data we have to rely on is at smaller schools and he was most recently in a QC role.

I'd say much like Scott, he's all we could get. Doesn't mean he'll be bad, but it's not like we stole Ohio State's O line coach.

Critical season for Butch, I'm hoping for the best.

He's apparently a good recruiter. He has no track record as an OLine coach. It's a little early to laud it as a great hire, and to denigrate a VFL receiver over his opinion because he didn't spread enough sunshine. I hope he's great as a coach. If he's not, I hope he is the world's finest recruiter.

If I wasn't clear that's what I meant.

'.... Other top ten teams go for the best and the Vols hire Olympic coordinators....." .

You mean the offensive coordinator that just led the Tennessee offense to the most total yards and most touchdowns in school history. Is that the one you are talking about here?:good!:

Paying other coaches too much money. Had to cut costs somewhere.

Hope he is motivated and becomes a great coach though.

Lets beat Bama!
