Swain not impressed with Wells hire.

Yep that's the one. That fine record got the Vols to the Music City Bowl too. And lost to USCe and Vandy. I'm happy we could get more yards and points in other games. Good stuff. Just imagine what the offense could have accomplished with two more wins rather than a fun statistic.

So basically, too bad the offense couldn't play defense. Got it.

Probably need more wait and see posters than the ones on the fringes. Of course if I had to pick a fringe, I would pick the side where I wouldn't have to be miserable every day of my existence.

You're probably right, on all of it. I cannot understand people who have their personal identity tied up in a sports program. Life's too short.

The O left so many points on the field in so many games. You have fun with your statistic which means nothing in three or more games that his offense got stuffed.

I submit to your genius football intellect. Do you understand the team which scores more points wins right?

They scored more TDs and had more yards than the teams led by Peyton Manning!! You do understand that there is an offense and a defense that both have to produce, right?

38 pts vs A&M and 34 pts vs Vandy should have been enough to win. Heck, South Carolina didn't score more than 14 pts against any SEC defenses but UT and Missouri. So 21 pts was enough to win that one too.

Not only do you not know much about football, you didn't even stay in a Holiday Inn this year!!

You need to get with Boro Vol, he knows everything about football, he can enlighten you. :)

Cosigned. I wonder how the chemistry of the offensive staff will be, specifically between Scott and CZA. Guess that's a topic for a different thread.

From a continuity standpoint, it should be a positive. It's apparent that Butch values that in the offensive side (CZA is still here).

There were times when it was ugly against SC, App State etc, but really, I'm not sure how much else we were going to get out of the offense last year.

Sc, App State, and Bama are the only 3 games that come to mind where our offense couldn't get it going. Every other game, we rang up the scoreboard and moved the ball up and down the field. Hard to win games when you can't stop anyone, which seemed to be the case from the Texas A&M game on.

So we all agree Mahoney wasn't getting it done here? Never heard his name mentioned in recruiting. So we replace him with a guy who is said(from his peers) to have a infectious personality and recruits and coaches love him and has ties instate. Instate talent is as good as its ever been this year and we're questions this as a bad move? Can't imagine going through life looking for the negative in everything.
Infectious personalities won't keep Coleman Thomas grabbing for air on every snap. But those are good attributes. This has the sound of the age old Vols should hire George Quarles debate. "Everybody around here loves him. He would be a great hire."

I have to think CZA is pretty pissed about life. In surprised he didn't fly the coupe after getting passed over.

I was too. That one is a head scratcher...Especially with the way our receivers have jumped ship in the last couple of years.

And I was a big Azzanni critic going into the 2016 season. But the WRs really seemed to improve this year. Jennings had his coming out party. Malone looked night and day better than he did his previous 2 seasons. Byrd showed promise. His name is always attached to OC jobs in the offseason. Even Swain commended Azzanni's efforts this year. There's a reason he is still around.

Well Mahoney wasn't helping much with that either and dude couldn't recruit a fat kid with a candy bar so I'll give Wells the benefit of the doubt. Can't be any worse.

I just look at it as a way to take my mind off of more serious issues going on in the world or my own personal existence. I may get fired up during a game, but 5 minutes after the game I'm over it. Not going to let something I have 0 control over ruin the rest of my day. That being said, at least we are not Alabama where they shoot each other if they lose (See the kick 6 game against Auburn)

So, we have the following hires by our fearless leader Butch Jones.

Walt Wells: 20 years plus in coaching who has never coached at a major school and was relegated to taking a back burner role after leaving Eastern KY this past season.

Mike Canales: couldn't land the HC job at North Texas or even the OC job at his alma mater of Utah State. Another long time coach that topped out in the mid majors basically. His claim to fame is developing the passing motion of Phillip Rivers.

Brady Hoke: has managed to flame out in rather spectacular fashion at Michigan and put a worse defense on the field for Oregon last season than the Vols.

Charlton Warren: snagged an up and comer from NC after forcing everyone to suffer through 4 years of Martinez.

Rock Gullickson: snagged him from one of the absolute worst teams in the NFL in the form of the Rams after getting into it with his former long time S&C guy Dave Lawson.

Moved Stripling into a perfunctory football development role to keep him around.

Much like Jones' record at TN, it looks like another round of barely being above average.

Hoke and Warren should be upgrades in coaching and recruiting.

Canales and Wells seem put in place to provide absolutely no challenge to Jones authority or to provide any semblance of a fresh perspective for the offense.

Gullickson ostensibly cant be any worse than what they had last season but who really knows how a long time NFL guy will mesh with college players.

Swain isn't the only one not impressed.

It took him 3 years to get production from two guys with elite talent. I would LOVE to see Azzanni replaced. If the original staff were still in place... he'd probably be my first choice to go. I don't spend a lot of time bashing the guy. Ultimately the guy with all of the info and the right to make decisions about the staff is Jones. I criticize him. But from a production stand point, this is the first year the WR group has been even close to "average" in the SEC. The Vols have had talent. It should not have taken so long. Unfortunately, it seems there will be a step back in talent this fall. That doesn't bode well with a guy who really hasn't done a great job of developing anyone.

I would like to see the TE's be a little more utilized this year.

Going back to the Fulmer years, we seemed to not utilize TEs up to their potential. I remember Randy Sanders even putting Jason Witten in the slot in an effort to get him the ball more. TEs are Larry Scott's wheelhouse. If he does have his fingerprints on the offense, I'm hoping to see the utilization of the TE emerge this upcoming season.

How is Jones' record at UT above average... barely or otherwise?

Other than that, good post. I don't agree that it is that hopeless. But agree the D hires reflect Jones letting go while the O choices demonstrate that he's tightening his grip if nothing else.

Where have you been? CBJ is blasted more on this board and by the local media than the fake news networks blast Trump.

Did Butch Jones stiff you for an autograph at some point?

Wouldn't buy from her.

Said that Wells was one of 3 OL Coaches last year with Mahoney and Debord.
Swain says if all 3 put out a bad product last year, how will now just one of them coaching alone put out a better product.

Everyone knows if your boss horrible it is hard to be a really successful person below them as they make a lot of the final strategic decisions.

Maybe ridding ourselves of one person who may have been hurting will make it much better?

It all goes back to the lack of O-line play. If the QB doesn't have the time to let the WRs run their routes or let a play develop, the WRs are going to suffer. Games are won and lost in the trenches. I think the biggest swing and miss by Butch was letting the players push Lawson out the door only to bring in the crossfit fat guy that had our lineman looking weak all year long. We won 9 games in spite of poor line play on both sides of the ball. Hopefully bringing in an NFL strength and conditioning coordinator will right the ship.
