How long did it take Sabin turn around Alabama?

One year I believe. We actually have better talent than they did in Saban's first year. Someone with good to great coaching ability could come in here and win 10 to 11 games by year 2. I have no doubts about that.

People may not like this post, but firing Butch Jones will set us back another 5+ years.

Support Butch he didn't lose the game, poor execution lost us that game. Should we have given Kelly the ball on the 1, yes, but we also should have not had penalties in the red zone. We shouldn't have shanked a punt to give them field possession. We shouldn't have let a WR run past us.

The program is in the best shape it has been in since 2006. Stay the course and support Butch.

No man done with him, he is a fake!

I don't disagree....he knows it's too big, but something won't allow him to let go. Maybe it's the fact that his ego won't let him take the necessary step back down a level. That's tough for anybody, even with a substantial buyout.

Being a free country tough. Anybody can post whatever they feel or think, no matter the validity of their argument. Based on the time CBJ has been coaching at UT we have had an improving record against one of the toughest schedules in NCAA. He has recruited as well as anyone but Meyer and Saban. We have not been in a lot of player off campus issues or major NCAA violations. Agree that no coach is perfect. Last year was an injury anomaly that is carrying over to this year. GT and UF were close games with near equally talented teams. I'm going to stick with Butch and agree with the OP that a change would set us back 5 or more years. It is a shame we can't require posters to tell the truth about their true colors.

This would be great if it were true. GA Tech has NOWHERE near our roster talent, and had their best runningback not play, Florida lost most of their defense to the draft, had their best offensive players suspended plus several backups, and had a true freshman QB that didn't know his head from his ass in the first game this season.

Poor Execution.....coaching discipline
Kelly run the ball on the 1....coaching decision
Penalties in red zone......coaching discipline.
Shanking the punt.....Trevor Daniel
Let WR run past us....coaching scheme decision

You are right Butch didn't lose the game.....Trevor Daniel did!

What makes me absolutely furious is how good Vandy and Memphis look...We are the flagship university in Tennessee and the 2 teams we schedule to beat up on annually look better than we do...Well not so much Memphis much anymore but you get the point....Even Kentucky looks better than us...That upsets my stomach to say that.

There is enough talent that a suitable interim could rally us and get us back in the hunt. I think we can all agree Florida is likely not winning the East.

Butch ain't the one.

Hell I'd trust Gillespie as an interim over Butch right now. He seems to be the only competent coach on this staff. Pay that man big money to stay on this staff no matter who else we bring in.

I think for most it's not THAT we lost, as much as HOW we lost. We see the same issues continuing, now 5 years in. They can longer be blamed on personnel. It has to fall on the shoulder of the highly paid professional coach at some point.

A loss in year 5 is a loss. There is no how to it. There is no moral victories in year 5 and there are no regretful wins. You are what you are after 4 years of building. When we all made our preseason predictions did we not know this??? Did we not realize that every single loss we predicted was gonna be detestable, because in year 5 there is no good way to lose?

There are many that think we got lucky against tech. No we didn't! We forced those TO's. We blocked that kick. We drove on that defense time and time again. We beat tech.

Let's see what happens with GA. I was a little encouraged by the defensive performance ( giving up the bomb killed my solid b grade for the defense ). Offensively, I've said it over and over, CBJ is going with a pocket qb this year ( which I disagreed with, and I could go on and on and on as far as X's and O's why I would have chosen a running qb but I won't here. I will say this, a running qb running the read option with John Kelly, and our defense getting the amount of stops we were getting, I do not see FL winning that game. ), and we are seeing the rec's and line and to a lesser extent, qd struggle. We have to get this pass game working better between now and GA or we will lose.

I would almost bet money that is why he hired Sexton

Yup..let's see if he bolts the pressure is on.. the hand has been dealt.
Let's see him try to build up his coaching career after this game.. he's gonna be trying to sell his self now, jus watch you're probably gonna see or hear a lot of what he has done for this program type statements..

We have supported him.

Butch is an above average recruiter and a decent Sunday thru Friday coach. But he's not a good game day coach.

Butch has had plenty of time to 'learn on the job.'

He also now has enough time on the job for everyone to see the patterns. Game history is repeating itself with Butch and it's not pretty.

Bottom line... This is as good as it gets with Butch heading a program.

He needs to go.

I believe Saban's first year was not so great, but he did beat us and every year after that. But yes, year two was a winning season and I believe he notched his first Natty at Bama in year three. And here we are knocking it out of the park in the game of life five years on and not having sniffed an SEC East Title.

VOLS Report Card on Flordia 24x7sports

Coaching
This is a game Tennessee wins with better coaching and better execution. The Vols simply made too many mistakes and threw away too many missed opportunities to win a game that was there for the taking. Some of the missed opportunities, like a drop here or a poor throw there, were on the players, but in other cases it was questionable playcalling and general stubbornness in sticking with the shotgun in short-yardage situations. Electing not to get John Kelly or Ty Chandler more involved in red-zone short-yardage situations was a head-scratcher. Kelly was the best player on the field on Saturday, but the Vols oddly opted not to let him finish drives for them. Defensively the Vols were passive early in the game and the Gators simply took what they were given, but Tennessee largely was in control of Florida's struggling offense, which managed just 191 yards through three quarters. The big catastrophic plays continue to haunt the Vols, though, and multiple missed tackles were killers when the Vols needed a stop down 13-10 in the fourth quarter. The Gators really only had one sustained drive (the first one) and needed just 32 and 44 yards on two drives resulting in 10 points. Tennessee started three drives in Florida territory and scored three points on those possessions. Three red-zone trips netted three points. The Vols had first-and-5 at the Florida 12-yard line, first-and-goal twice at the 1 and third-and-2 at the 16. Penalties and not running the ball with Kelly ruined those opportunities. As for the final play, it simply can't happen whether you have four defenders standing at the goal line guarding against a throw to the end zone or just two safeties deep guarding against the potential for a completion long enough to set up a long field goal try. The game also shouldn't have come down to that play, but Tennessee was too wasteful and too undisciplined in all facets of a game that was there for the taking, and that begins and ends with the coaching staff. An inexplicable loss. GRADE: F

A little help for Jones

I love your posts count, you are one of my favs. But is that picture, you are dealing with the same amount of defenders, looking to stuff the run, as in the other pick. It comes down to execution. Which, i must admit, is on CBJ.

No it won't. A bad hire to replace him might. But to fire a coach that doesn't get the job done doesn't "set you back". In fact, the thing CERTAIN to set the program back is if Jones doesn't turn it around to finish better than 8-4... and is kept. You send a clear message to recruits that you simply don't care about winning or coaching competence.

Support Butch he didn't lose the game, poor execution lost us that game.
Mistakes lost the game. So did Jones' failure to adequately sign and develop WR and LB depth. So did his decision to bring Lawson with him from the mid-majors. So did 1000's of other decisions big and small that ultimately fall directly at the feet of the HC.

You can't point to gameday mistakes without taking account for what got you to that point. And that... is ALL on Jones.

Should we have given Kelly the ball on the 1, yes, but we also should have not had penalties in the red zone. We shouldn't have shanked a punt to give them field possession. We shouldn't have let a WR run past us.
Yes. And UT shouldn't be depending on Fr and Sophs at WR in Jones' year 5. He shouldn't have underclassmen playing at LB and hoping they'll be better than he expects. For that matter, do the things they use for evaluation in practice translate to game performance? It seems that Bituli would have still been buried in the depth chart if not for some injuries.... if your evaluations are designed to put the best players on the field then how on earth was he EVER behind Jumper?

The program is in the best shape it has been in since 2006. Stay the course and support Butch.
I'm willing to give him his final exam. I'm willing to see if he can correct the problems with these players and this team. I'm willing to see what he does with the other 3 quality football teams on the schedule. I'm willing to see if he chokes again against one of the little sisters. I'm willing to see if he can finally NOT be outcoached by Mason and Muschamp.

If he fails... that's not a "course" I'm willing to support and NO UT fan should.

Butch can win a lot of fans back with a victory over UGA in two weeks. I will always support the VOLS no matter what but when will Butch stop letting these very winnable games slip away? 2013 UGA GAME, 2014 UF, 2014 UGA, 2015 OU, 2015 UF, 2015 ARKY, 2015 BAMA, 2016 A&M, 2017 UF etc. All of these examples are an indictment on CBJ. It just seems like there too many instances where we play not to lose instead of going for the jugular.

Don't just post coaching grades. I'll agree with this F and add QB, WR, secondary, and special teams were all an F.

I'll stay with Butch and let the season play out. But, clearly there's an argument to be made to cut our losses. We've seen bad decision after bad decision during games. My slight lean towards Butch of course is: Recruiting, Injuries, Improvement. The program is financially stable now, the team has improved, and without those injuries, we when the East and more last year. This year? Younger team with an expected 3 to 4 losses. End of season, we have 5 or 6 losses with all kinds of coaching blunders? Hello new coach. A 'star coach' expresses interest in job? Hello new coach. Otherwise, stay the course (at least until the end of the season).

I think the coach has done a great job of getting the program on the right track. We as fans are upset about losing a last second game again to a team that was favored to win at home over us. The fact that people are excited about a team that was not supposed to be competitive this year just shows you where the program is compared to where it was during Coach Dooley's time. The coaches lost this game. I won't argue that. They lost it by starting a new quarterback and showing them that they are going to stand behind him even when he's making poor decisions. We missed several very long field goals. Outside of the last play, I'm not upset with the play calling. Most of us would like to see UT pound the ball. Florida's defensive unit is supposed to be their power. If we pounded it at the line 3 times and didn't get in, we'd be asking why didn't we throw it. I'm not in love with the coaching staff, but I do think all this crap about firing a coach in the middle of the season is ridiculous, especially when I see a team that is capable of surprising some folks. I saw a lot of players playing hard and this team obviously is supportive of the coach because they don't quit. If the players aren't quitting on the coach, that should tell us something in my opinion. Agree or disagree with me, but, I am excited to see how this year plays out. I recall the 1985 season with a team that was 9-1-2 and think that may have been the most exciting team I ever watched and they didn't win three of their games. This isn't 1985, but I see a lot to enjoy. Look and see who beat us that year.
