Agree....Having a new DC is great but he needs better players with much better S&C coaching to have big success. I've said for a good while we are weak. The SC coach needs to go.Agreed. I’m tired of hearing how developed guys LOOK. We had a bunch of upper extremity injuries including David Sanders’. People keep commenting on how much weight he put on, but it was soft weight.
Our guys look nothing like these championship teams, and the most telling fact is that they get pushed around by teams—including those with less talent.
Banks was the 3rd guy on my list that needed to go—but somehow he went first. Elarbee second, and Kurt Schmidt first.
My reason for believing we should let go of Schmidt first, is because I believe there is a real possibility performance across the board would improve if our S&C improved. Otherwise, we are kind of making blind fires.
The reason I am so keen on this situation is because I remember how Tennessee’s team absolutely tanked after losing Dave Lawson under Butch Jones. If I recall correctly, Butch ended up promoting Michael Szerszen from within, and I remember thinking it was a terrible move to begin with. I blamed Butch for years until I learned how handcuffed he was by Mike Hamilton who apparently wouldn’t spring for a top notch guy.
I just posted about Butch Jones in another thread. He did so many cringeworthy things, it made it easy for so many to pile on. But his achievements everywhere else have been notable, and he experienced mild success here for a couple of years. Losing Lawson hurt him badly, and getting a top guy in that role would help Huepel greatly.
We got pushed around this year... Soft and getting hurt more than most... Also embarrassed ourself running out with dad bods against Ohio State pregame acting tough.... Seriously we look bottom half SEC physical wise... Vandy pushed us around...
Not many guys are growing up on small farms any more. I remember when I was a Freshman in. High school in 1956, the only weights we had were 2 gallon cans filled with concrete connected with an iron bar. I you dudn’t wear gloves, your hands would be bleeding after a workout. However, it must have worked pretty well because we won a lot of football and basketball games including Dobyns Bennett and Chattanooga-Central. My son is a S&C coach at Walton High school in marietta, Georgia. Those guys started chucking around hay bails when they were seven years old. Our guys are waaaay behind!
That is the one thing I'll give Pruitt credit for. He knew what SEC caliber talent looked like.People won’t admit it, but a lot of our success in Heupel’s first 3 seasons occurred because of the scouting and recruiting that took place under pruitt.
Heupel got the offense figured out schematically which was the missing piece of the puzzle. We have to get bigger and stronger as a team, especially on defense.
Nick Saban had tons of terrible assistants, but still won titles. And nobody can name one S&C coach he had.Yes, Vandy did whip Tennessee but all Strength and Conditioning coaches don't do the same thing and neither do assistants. The difference in being a great team is having great schemes on both sides of the ball with the right players to execute the schemes and the right S&C to whip our guys in to tip top shape to be able to dominate for 4 quarters. Offense, Defense, Special Teams. GBO
