Statement from Fulmer.

Barnes has a house 20 minutes away from me in Debordieu Colony (I actually know the exact address). He was never moving to LA. I feel like this dude played UT for a raise. And for that, it kind of pisses me off.

Yes. And it appears possible that was part of the deal falling apart. Just as likely the renegotiation with UT meeting could easily also have been an attempt to negotiate a reduced Barnes buyout to leave. Sans buyout reduction, Barnes likely held less advantage in negotiation to stay.

All the coaches you mentioned us getting have buyouts. UCLA couldn't get them but we could?

Barnes leaving makes that even easier with an additional 5 million cash in hand from his buyout.

You don't think this through very deeply, do you? I'm getting exhausted drawing the lines for you.

I don’t know I’m kind of curious what $4.7M/year could have got us.
The grass isn't always greener. It would be interesting to know, but I'm not willing to part with Barnes to find out and watch us eventually spend $2.5 million on Johnny Mid-major to start over. Bird in the hand, I guess.

I figured Barnes might get bumped up to $4-4.25 million to compete with UCLA's offer, so I guess we overpaid by $500k/yr. Nothing outrageous.

My point was UCLA was willing to pay 5 million buyout for Barnes AND pay 5 million a year.

For us thehe buyouts at best wash so I see why your brain is exhausted. UCLA has is a better job in BBall and they offered more and can't get one of the names you've offered but somehow you think we could.

Well, you live your life being pissed off, so I don’t know that this means a whole lot. 1554780379586.gif

Meanwhile, an alternate spin: this forced Fuller to get serious about men’s BB. And if part of this $4.7m was a good chunk of money for assistants, more power to him.

Has your wife never cleared her throat at you?

I don’t know man. He’s making 500K more than Izzo. $1M more than Jay Wright. I’m all for pay raises and rewarding guys but not like Barnes is out here making Final Fours.

Are we forgetting that Texas fired him? Yea, he’s been a good coach for us to get things back on track but damn...we’re paying him like he’s Tom Izzo (who, btw, only makes 4.1 mil a year and has a .723 win percentage).
Would you rather pay him a million more a year or end up with Ronnie Tyndall, Donnie’s little brother, as our head coach. You know that’s what would happen.

How is it a wash? Buyout is cash negative for UCLA, not to mention previous buyouts. It is cash positive for UT. If UT then wants a high dollar coach with big buyout, they would have free money in hand to start out before salary is even involved. A 5 mil coach costs UCLA 10 mil. Same coach costs UT 5 mil.

It’s just aggravating because I know Bruce would take the job for way less and do way more.

If true, Fulmer is the Man. We’ve seen in football that offering money doesn’t always get your guy. I’m not sure Barnes is worth that much but It seems likely that had He left Tennessee would have ended up with a lesser coach.

It is a wash for us - we get 5 million for Barnes we have to pay 5 million or whatever for Izzo or Drew or Beard.

The point is UCLA already baked in paying the buyout and 5 million a year and none of those guys were biting. Why would they bite here? Give me some objective reasons why being the BBall coach at UT at the same pay is the better job than UCLA and I'll listen. Otherwise it's fantasy land.

So UT is a better BBall coaching job than UCLA?
Where did you read that? Do you have any more red herring? And to answer that question, they are not in different stratosphere. UCLA has some history that is nice, but it's been fading since about the 70s. See the Lady Vols for how quickly that ceases to matter.
