Something that hasn't been mentioned...

First year at Vanderbilt, #18 in the country in total defense.

First year at Penn State, #2 in the country in total defense

First year at Tennessee, through 7 games, #88 in the country in total defense.
I wonder what it would take for the D to jump into the top 25 after the back half of the schedule?

I think Shoop has done ok so far, but do you think the success of his prior team's defenses has anything to do with the schedule they play?

I believe we will continue to improve through this year and into next year as well. It would be much easier to get a feel for this defense if there weren't so many dang injuries.

I've mentioned that none of the players are his recruits and that he inherited them. He's using what he's got. That's like plugging a dam with chewing gum. It's all he has.....

It is ridiculous to insinuate that he had no talent coming into this season. Ridiculous.

Total Defense - 88

Rush Defense - 107

Pass yards allowed - 43

Out of 128 FBS schools.

With the heart of your front 7 out. 2 LB's (JRM, DKJr), to include Sapp and Quartez. 2 DT's (KMac, DO, Phillips), not to forget the backend: 3 CB's (Cam, MF, JM). You can't hide the replacements nor scheme against that much experience and talent that's lost.

regarding the defense.

I see A LOT of fans, etc. questioning Shoop and the defensive production, but not ONCE has anyone mentioned that this is YEAR ONE of a brand new defense.

Considering that... I think that the defense has done very well.

Yes, we've been gashed here or there, but isn't that normal when instituting a brand new scheme? Shouldn't those breakdowns be expected in the first year.

I believe so.

IMO... before anyone can really start critiquing, let's give it ample time for implementation.

Bama changes coaches all the time. It doesn't hurt them at all. Great players, great coaches. Freshmen step up and play as well as the players leaving for the NFL.

It CAN be done.

Grass is always greener.

I am extremely excited about Shoop. If nothing else the man made Colton Jumper into a ball player, Moseley and Foreman as well.

Debord's offense has put Shoop in some VERY bad positions this year. I would hope everyone can see that.

Our defense is currently ranked 80th in the country in total offense, down 28 spots from 2015.

Our defense is currently ranked 88th in the country in total defense, down 52 spots from last year.

Our offense has generally not been good except in bursts, no argument there. But our defense has been bad all year long with the exception of the second half vs Florida and here and there vs most everybody else except for Alabama, where we were horrific all game long.

This defense doesn't tackle well, is constantly out of position, it never, ever sets the edge to attempt to turn perimeter plays back in where there's help. It equally has gotten consistently gashed up the middle. And of course, it's like a Madden game when teams throw deep on us and not one single db on the team has shown any tendency to even consider looking back for the football.

We gave up a 100 yard rusher to App State, a 100 yd rusher to Va Tech, a 150+ yard receiver to Ohio, a 300 yard passer to a backup qb and a 130+ yd receiver vs Florida, a 200 yard rusher and a 100 yard rusher, and now two 100 yard rushers vs Bama. So, we've consistently allowed a lot of yards and some very big individual performances in every game we've played in addition to just being generally bad for the majority of the game across the board.

IMHO, Derek Barnett is literally the ONLY true positive associated with our defense this year. Shoop has simply been a disappointment thus far, injuries or no injuries.

I really don't know why everyone is arguing about whether our defense is good or not. Butch Jones has said that our rush defense is "UNACCEPTABLE". There is no defense for the drop off this year, and the head coach has stated as much. I for one am glad he feels that way, and with that mindset, it will improve.

Jeremy Pruitt is in his first year as D Coordinator at Bama. Granted he has better players, but they don't have many blown assignments so it looks like they're picking up the system pretty well.

lot easier when you you're three deep with four and five star players...even you or I could do it...oh, yeah, did I mention Kirby Smart was the last DC...with about eight years to run Saban's system...:)

GO VOLS...GET WELL SOON!

While a lot of us agree with you, you know that's not the VOL Nation bloggers way; they must criticize everything as IF they were the real experts. And I respect every one has opinions just like everyone has an azz_ole, and of course, we have several of those on here too. Rabid fans we are, and sometimes it just gets the best of us. I'm hoping we can get healthy enough to win out and maybe thrash Albubbas in the SEC CG. Hmmm, all I want for Christmas is....to stomp some Alabubbas rear ends; not that I'm confident we will this year, but hey, anything can happen.

When he lost his lockdown corner and the linebackers who were supposed to be a team strength, it kinda limited his options.

Well before he lost them teams were still rolling us in the run game.

If not for an unforced VaTech turnover, would be interesting to see how that game ended.

I've got mixed feelings on Shoop's production thus far.

On one hand, our defense this year has mostly played without most of our best players and has been pretty good to downright dominate in the second half at times.

On the other hand, this will likely end up being the first year he's ever NOT had a top 25 defense as a power 5 D.C.

HOW!? You can't tell me that our defense (even with so many injuries) is worse than what he had to work with year one at Vandy.

It's hard to wrap my head around.

There is that other thought - could it be that Vandy out recruited UT - at least on defense?

Any evidence anyone could ever point to says just the contrary....Tennessee by a country mile.
