So, about that OC position.... (Merged)

He did, Helton was also a coach that Pruitt had never worked with and not a proven OC.

I think/hope if Pruitt got a guy he trusts, proven OC & has worked with it won’t be a micromanager situation.

And with Pruitt/Helton situation. Pruitt has never been a HC before. He probably wasn’t fully ready to be a HC yet either going into last year.

But it was what Tennessee could get because of the state of the program. He seems like he is going to be a good HC, but it won’t be without growning pains

I agree. Trust in your coaches is something they earn, not blindly given. Pruitt had to hold Helton’s hand a lot more because he was not comfortable with Helton’s decisions and Helton did not fully know what Pruitt wanted.

Kirby better keep on recruiting top classes. His coaching isn't going to make any difference. Seems most guys that leave Saban's empire tend to look mortal and downright pedestrian after...That's why i'm not sold on Pruitt, and if the writing is on the wall after year 3 i hope we don't hang on to save a buck like we did Botch..
If Pruitt hasn’t brought in a top 5 class or won 8-9 games by the end of year 3 this program is in trouble. That will almost prove to us all that JP isn’t who he’s cracked up to be....2019 will be the key year to see what he’s really made of to see if he can really prove his worth or if he’s another Bama salesman who really don’t give a crap...

I have a feeling it’s going to be Casey Clausen. He would be great. And he owns Florida

Bowls are ever short of the Natty, NFL seasons are still wrapping up for some teams, but for the most part those coaches that are still coaching are off the table for a college job.

Seems to me that this should be the week we hear SOMETHING.

At this point I don’t believe we will get an on staff hire as that would be admitting we whiffed for a month.

No not really I justdon’t know what the holdup is since sark got fired two days ago

Well he got fired on New Years eve, I'd say a lot of people were busy and I'm sure he wasn't the only client of his agent that got fired Monday. Then yesterday was a holiday for most places such as schools and what not. So we might not hear anything till later this week maybe early next week.

What if our new OC is coaching for a team that makes the Super Bowl?

There is no reason to delay an announcement. Pruitt had no trouble announcing he was coming here before the NC game. So I don't see bowl games as having slowed any announcement either. We haven't heard who the new OC is because we haven't hired one yet.

Could be contract negotiations
Could be still wanting to interview someone
Or Pruitt could just want to recruit until he can’t. (If I remember correct didn’t he fire RG last year after signing day?)

You think new OC will make his/her announcement at halftime of Under Armour All American Game? makes sense

Difference is you could see flashes this year with a Terrible roster and all media information talk about what great teachers we have as coaches....i think Pruitt will be fine as long as he has enough time and can keep quality coaches

Well Ohio state had no issue and Horton hired holgersen I believe

And that's what leads me to believe it is an internal hire and we may not know until after national signing day. Afraid it will hurt possible recruits.

I wonder a bit if the new Tennessee OC and Georgia DC are NFL guys who just need to finish their season.

My guess is an internal hire is the backup plan. Right now they are probably trying to pull in a bigger name if possible. If the choice was already made and they were holding it back, I think it would leak. While I have my questions about Pruitt, I don't see him as the type for this cloak and dagger stuff. So far I wouldn't describe his demeanor as subtle.

For this OC search, it has been speculated that Pruitt wants someone that:

1) He can trust (which probably means he has worked with and/or knows well), and
2) Is a great recruiter, and
3) Likes to run the ball/control the clock, and
4) Has SEC experience

He has also been (mis)quoted (or his statements taken out of context) as saying the OC position is overrated. Thus, could this mean that perhaps the person does not have to be a current OC? Or maybe not even have experience with that "specifc title", but knows how to produce on offense, especially when it comes to the run game.

If this is the case, and even though this person is in an off-field capacity now, perhaps Pruitt and he have such a close relationship that stranger things could happen. Not sure if this name has been mentioned anywhere, so apologies if so, but if not, I give you...

...Burton Burns (I know, I know, another bammer)

Most likely not, but could explain some of the secrecy and delay.

Got to find "value" in the hire. There are guys out there who can do the job well. Some are the "names" everyone wants to throw around... some of them are young up and comers waiting to be discovered... some are guys who for whatever reason have never gotten "their shot". They have experience and success... but maybe just don't network well. For instance, Charlie Flohr… OC at Northwest Missouri State. Sharp offensive mind. Young enough. Experienced enough. Extremely successful and especially at developing undertalented players. Eric Eidness has been part of a great turn around at South Dakota State.

The long and short of it is... find a GREAT coach and don't worry about the "name".

Cant it be safely assumed that the person UT hires is not currently an OC at the college level, unless they are gonna pull the OC from Bama or Clemson? Anybody else would have been announced by now.
