Should she have been fired?

But I thought white people were the only ones who are racist?

Had it been the other way around speaking of Obama I am certain he would have to make a speech about the matter. Above all its not the comment that concerns me the most its the fact she was a counselor for kids.

she should be fired. People like that don't need to be counseling kids. What if one of the people she was asked to counsel was a white kid whose relative was killed? Could her employer be confident in her ability to perform her job?

Court of public opinion vs losing your livelihood? Fact is he was probably the only person in his company who could have said what he said and kept his position. Had an employee said something to cause such a hit to revenue he/she would have been fired. And, I would support the employer's right do do so. I have no issue with an employer tterminating someone due to an obvious disruption at their business. In the case of this racist woman that was not shown to be the case. She was fired simply because she offended people not for any proven or obvious work performance or workplace disruption. That is the part I have trouble with.

The fact that she is a counselor to kids makes such view poorly reflection of her performance and/or the ability to adequately perform the functions her job entails. Chances are it would cause a disruption with coworkers as well.

If I was her manager I'm not sure that I would have fired her on this single incidence but there would have been a heavy reprimand.

Regardless, free speech does not protect your job status if you say stupid things.

"My Facebook account was hacked and the statement that was made is not of my character. I am a school counselor who will never 1) jeopardize my family, 2) jeopardize my job, and 3) jeopardize the trust of the students, parents, staff, faculty, and administration of GPISD," Wright wrote in a statement to News 8. "I am upset that this statement was posted on the WFAA website without Josh Davis nor WFAA calling the true source to get the true story. I am truly saddened by the tragedies in Boston and West, Texas. I have prayed for those cities and the families whom was impacted for I wish no such catastrophe to happen to ANYONE regardless of race, nationality, etc. This is not and will never be apart of my character or what I stand for."

I understand your point. I'm not sure firing for stating opinions is merited.

I can see where in her job as a counselor she may have underminded her own credibility with some white parents/students.

IOW, empathy and lack of prejudice are critical components of her particular job and the comments call both into question.

If she was a maintenance person there would be less connection between comments and her "credentials".

Sometimes people do hack people's accounts. My daughter's roommate did it a few yrs ago when daughter was interviewing for jobs; coulda been disasterous.

If she said "blacks" would you think differently?

Nope. She has a right to believe and say what she wants. But be that as it may, you deal with the life you lead. Welcome to the real world lady, now go get a job twirling signs
