Shoop gives props to Colton Jumper

How does one tell a good play for certain?

Cutcliffe told me of a QB who threw a TD pass but he got a negative point from Cut because pass went to the wrong player..

I guess he did have a couple of good plays.

For the other team.

The next play would have been 3rd and 15 had he made the sack and we could have jumped off sides on 2 consecutive plays and it would have been 3rd and 5. He was in position to make a play and didn't. Had he made the play it is very possible we go into half with a 17 point lead and we could say he made a great play.

By no means is the point you are trying to make wasted on me. It's a team effort but if our D was an 11 link chain, he was the weakest link IMO. Mayfield is slippery though.

And it's not lost on me, that you just admitted you'd rather see the VOLS (on nat'l tv) committ back-back, duo-DE offside penalties VS a 5 yrd qb scramble from 1 missed tackle from a blitzing LB.

That's 4 times the bad discipline / 4 times the out of position with your scenario vs the actual scenario.

Yes, it was a bad tackle, but How many strong, upper bodied qb's, including Dobbs, are able to elude tackles these days? Not just the ones covered by Jumper.

Anyone heard anything on Kenny Bynum?started against Arkansas last year I think , RS Senior.. Is he really that bad that he can't make the 2 deep LB roster at any of the positions? GBO !

Bynum will play quite a few snaps, but lacks the speed of really good LB's, would I feel more comfortable with Bynum over Jumper, good question, but I'd have to defer to Bob Shoop's judgement, wouldn't you?

Shoop has a proven track record of taking players that compare to Jumper and making them good system players with success.

Could it be that he has actually shown progress enough that Shoop can use him as a solid back up?

Could it be Shoop's way of lighting a fire under some of the other guys?

Maybe it's just the knowledge that even with good health there are gona have to be several diff body's rotated in and out of games throughout a long season in the SEC with all the tempo teams and he is trying to inspire confidence in Jumper because reguardless if he is talented enough, he is going to HAVE to play at some point.

Either way I hope CJ has improved enough to be a solid back up and be able to help this defense or at least not hurt it.

Watch Jarrod Davis #40 FL LB (then about 3 other players who missed tackles) be "out of position" when Hurd picked up 13 yrds against him (2:03 to go 1st qt of last year's gam / can be seen in this morn's thread "Article: The Best Backfield in America" which I just watched / this play looks very similar to the big "out of position" play many refer to on Jumper vs OK).

In this case, it was just a great run by Hurd (not LB out of position).

Edit: that next vid shows about 5 FL defenders "out of position." I laugh, because unless Hurd is just a great RB, all 5 of those guys need to be replaced, right.

Now on scholarship:

But it is how Jumper apparently hid that chip off the field after his demotion last season that has drawn much love and respect from his teammates.

"So proud of him," Sutton said. "Colton never got down. He just continued to fight, continued to battle, was always there to do whatever he thought would help the team. He's always embraced whatever role he's been asked to do."

Added Reeves-Maybin: "Our motto is 'Smart and Tough.' That definitely describes Jumper. He's underestimated as an athlete. We all know how hard he plays. We can always count on him."

Befitting both a lifelong Tennessee fan and a great teammate, even Jumper said of the talent and depth that cost him a starting spot, "Iron sharpens iron. Now we're not just talented, we're talented and deep."

“I don’t want to put too much on it early,” Shoop said. “Last year, I mean, the games that he played the most in were probably Bowling Green and Oklahoma, and those games were the kind of games where the middle linebacker can get exposed and be spread out all over the place by really good athletes.

“He’s smart. He gets the unit lined up. He’s got great leadership qualities. He’s got great communication qualities. He diagnoses run and pass plays well. He’s played fast, and he’s been, really, very, very consistent, so I’m excited.”

You have to admire Jumper's tenacity and work effort, he wants to be a Vol as much as anyone on team and Shoop recognizes his selfish effort and gives him praise....congrats Mr Jumper

The Jumper saga has been VN at its finest. No established depth and a first year walk on player is called into action and doesn't play at an all-American level. Gets passed by a highly recruited first year player. VN declares him trash and unworthy of wearing the orange jersey. Walk on goes back to work to earn the praises of teammates and coaches and also a scholarship. VN declares it's because of his family connections and he's still trash.

A coach like Shoop doesn't praise players to make friends.

I actually think a good coach of which Shoop is one, never bad mouths a marginal type player in public. If asked about a kid on the margins he talks about his strengths and good things he sees. He doesn't run a kid down in the press. Starters and kids not even trying to reach their potential, could be fair game getting called out, but never run a kid down. Running a kid like Jumper down serves no good purpose so why do it?

JRM tweeted this last night:

"True successful people want to help other people be successful. Watch out for those who hate to see other people shine!!"

Not only is he a really good football player but he is really mature. Anybody who would ever want another person to not succeed is a miserable person.

Somehow in the Vols version of Rudy, the fans manage to completely ruin the story. Rather than being inspired by a walk-on who apparently works hard in practice, is respected by his coaches and players, and is doing his best to contribute... instead of celebrating his success some TN fans would rather insult and make fun of him.

Lets hope the UT version of that movie never gets made because it would be a very poor reflection of Vol fans.

I actually hope Jumper has improved and shows out this season. The way some people run their mouth, I would love for him to make them eat crow. Any player, whether walk on or scholarship play, dedicates themselves to this university and gives their all has my support.

You may be right. I would love to see McElwain and everyone associated with the UF football program fail in a mighty way.... and I'm pretty "miserable" with this ridiculous streak.
