Shoop gives props to Colton Jumper

His dad donated millions to UT last year....the Berry's did not

Implying play for money is a low class move. Continuing to do it multiple times in the same thread makes you look pathetic. Kid works his tail off and obviously the coaches think highly of that

I didn't say how much he gave or didn't give. I was just showing who his father was, I think this is all preseason coach speak anyhow. I don't think Jumper will see the field outside of special teams this fall.
Thats what people said all last year too but the kid constantly found his way onto the field in meaningful plays. It sickens me how people bash the kid he played fine last year but everyone wanted Kirkland to the point they bashed anyone not Kirkland playing Mike. Funny thing most times we had 3lb's on the field Jumper was the third. I think he is the most underrated player on the team bar none. No I don't think he is a star in the making or the second coming but he is a solid LB.

I trust Bob Shoop's evaluation of talent and if he says props to Colton Jumper, props it is!

Good job to a determined young Vol that walked on @ UT
Go Vols

Compliments from the coaches are one thing.

If he is starting at MLB again, I will have questions of my own.

If it's about winning, which we all agree it should be, then I would want seriously to know why the two or three better athletes at the position weren't given every chance to start.

By all accounts Kirkland stepped in with much less grasp of the defense than Jumper last year and proceded to thouroughly outplay him.

of course he has to give him props. His dad is a huge donor to UT

Fair enough review.

Pretty sure there were several busted D coverages in several games and key situationslast year, involving other players besides just this one (I believe JRM spent the summer reviewing tape with players / pointing out how his and others' plays could have been approached differently -- teamwork and improvement is the goal).

This thread is a breath of fresh air. Great to see Colton get respect from the coaches. It has been dismaying to read how some of our fans have excoriated this kid.

After all, he was thrown into the fire last year with no experience, and it showed. So what? Look at all of the highly touted guys who have done the same thing as freshmen or sophomores, only to bounce back the next year and shine, having learned the system and acclimated to life in this brutal conference. It happens over and over.

Does he have tons and tons of raw physical talent? No. Does he have heart, loyalty, enthusiasm and enough talent to capitalize on his experiences last year and be a significant contributor? Absolutely.

I like the walk on stories and trust me i wasn't that athletic in my 20's either. But damn. He was like watching a train wreck last year. I know if I was an opposing coach I would right at him. I know its mean to say but the truth is the truth.

Dude it's clear JRM and DKJr. are starting. This is about the next guys in line. McDowell Sapp and Jumper. Shoop gave him some praise. He didn't name him starter.

It would just be their pass rushing package. Then you put some combination of Vereen, Lewis, Phillips, Taylor, Smith, etc on the outside.

If an SEC caliber LT can't stop Barnett.... what do you think he'll do to an OG?

We have a winner!!! This is the entire point....move Barnet inside against a guard and bring pressure from outside on Barnett's side to prevent double-teams on Barnett...

Could play Kongbo at end, Barnett on same side over the guard and bring a blitzer on that side....similar to Bear's 46 Defense...and have some Zone blitz packages with Barnett backing up to take away the slant...

With Vereen and McKenzie/Tuttle on other side....to draw the double team from the Center.....that is a nightmare matchup--even for Bama....

:salute:

CBS did say those that deserved to play will play and it sounds like CJ is earning PT. For the first time in a long time we have depth on "D". :pepper:

It's just the nature of SEC football....it exposes everyone's weaknesses.....and it was clear that Colton was outmatched and a liability on Defense last year--no matter how much heart, determination, and drive he has....If that's all it took, TN would have about 500 walk-ons on the field every year!

But you have to have speed and the ability in the SEC....the sad truth is that too many have the speed and the ability but only half the heart of guys like Colton....And that is what is truly dismaying--but FB games are not won on sentimental emotions and good stories....

I truly hope that Colton is able to get on the field without being a liability.....and it seems from this report that Shoop thinks highly of him....

I love guys like Colton, Ellis, and Cave, the DL who walked-on....and want these guys to make it...but in the end, it's a brutal league with NFL caliber players at every position.....and no matter how much heart a dude has, he has to be ABLE to make plays....:salute:

GO VOLS!

I don't understand why people are getting so worked up, it's not like he is going to start over Kirkland Jr. Kirkland is going to be an absolute beast this year.
