SEC Network Prediction

Winning 8 games and losing to every major oppenent warrants a raise? Lol

Honesty, I'm beginning to believe fans that think this way must have grown up during this decade of mediocrity. It's the only way I can fathom the comfort & acceptance of achieving the bare minimum.

The real question, will vn survive that?

Nope!!

I am sick of all these experts and their predictions...we will be somewhere between 5-7 and 10-2. We will be somewhere between a dark horse for the SEC East to finishing behind Kentucky. Good grief....

I am so ready for them to strap on the pads and go out there and prove that we are Tennessee and prove it on the field.

Go Vols!!

whether or not the specifics of this come to fruition, there's always this kind of cloud hanging around as you watch other programs you compete with make changes like that, and wind up in a better spot.

it sickens me that Mac has 2 division titles in 2 years at FL with the way Muschamp left FL. it wasn't as bad as what CBJ inherited, but he won two divisions with a make shift offense, and a rotation of QB's that would make most programs fail.

and if Kirby wins the East this year...what really do we have to say for ourselves?

that's the reality i don't want to face. really hoping to be surprised this year.
The East seems to be up in the air, yet again. Anything can happen although the smart money is not on us.

Okay. Lets say he goes 8 and 4 this year. Georgia, Florida, Bama, and LSU are on next years schedule. Maybe he goes 9 and 3 next year. Is that acceptable? I am just thinking out loud. I don't know the answers. Just some thoughts. Some where down the road he needs to go 10 and 2 or 11 and 1.

He needs to make significant improvement in 18 to keep his job. Returning qb coming back, highly regarded recruiting class, etc. and after all, we are letting him slide for 8-4 in 17, so big improvement in 18 to keep job not just in record but in competitiveness with teams at the top of our schedule. 9 to 10 wins in 18 at a minimum, and be competitive with bama etc. 6 wins for sure this year, maybe seven and he's gone or should be, maybe Bob Stoops will be bored by then

If Butch is going to stay for next season, we're probably going to have to give him a contract extension. Two years of underachievement, not significant end of the world underachievement but underachievement nonetheless, followed by the kind of season that most people are predicting us to have is not the sort of trajectory that makes ADs and boosters eager to grant extensions. I think it's VERY likely that a 7/8 win regular season this year will result in Butch taking his services elsewhere because of the contract situation.

Well in fairness, i think he is a Florida fan

What? 9 wins is no drop off.. that's a great coaching job after losing a lot of talent...

Not when you underperformed as badly as Jones did with the talent you lost. If coached well, UT has a 10 win roster this year.

I think Dormady leads in the QB race by a reasonable measure. But based on what we've been able to see, both are SEC quality QB's. If healthy, UT has enough talent on D to be outstanding. Even after an injury or two, UT has one of the deepest OL rosters in the SEC... experience and talent. They have talent at the skill positions though not many returning with long stat lines.

This comes down to coaching and coaching decisions that impact team development. Eight wins would prove nothing more than Jones can beat teams with less talent and still lose to those with equal or better talent.

I understand the arrogance of UF fans... that they do not believe UT fans have a right or reason to expect more than that... but some of us do.

this is what i don't get. he's signed thru, what 2020 right? it's not like he's heading in to next year as a lame duck, he's still got 4 years left, including this year.....

i get that the extension talks started, and stalled, and nothing's happened. and he hired sexton for a reason.

but i just don't get the anxiety on his part, or any of the fans' part, that if he doesn't get extended, then that means something's wrong.....

Supposedly, it's the kiss of death if a head coach cannot tell his recruits that he will be there for them for four years. Does anyone think he hired Sexton so we could just throw another year onto his current deal without significantly increasing they buyout? If we start out hot, I fully expect a major push to get an extension during the season. After last year, I think the AD will want to see the entire season play out.

Kind of interesting that Jones didn't get the extension he wanted and many think this is his best recruiting class....?

Player development and roster management are key components of the HC's job. What you're outlining is a fail in both areas-- and significant deficiencies in almost every position group. I hope that's not the case.

Good post.

agreed. if you want to hang your hat on something it's the fact he has been able to put this kind of class together with all the negative media/social media and the extension talks stalling.

you'd have to think it's really easy to negatively recruit against us right now....and him and the staff are overcoming.

hopefully that overcoming will continue on the field this year.

Excellent points. The middle part is sobering given he's still trying to figure out how to run a program in the SEC on his own.

not convinced at all they are ready to make a move no matter what this year's outcome is.

So... the powers that be do not expect UT's coach to handle these problems even though the coaches he competes against do?

UF has similar problems as does UGA. Right now it appears that UGA will have around 5 or so true Fr if not more in their two deep to start the season. I'm not sure what the current depth chart looks like but UF entered August with two Fr in their 2 deep at DT.

So this sounds a whole lot like very low expectations covered by ridiculous excuses about taking 6, 8, 10, 20... years to re-build a roster.

it very well could be that UT administration would be okay with that situation..

If a coach cannot build a credible OL in 5 years... that should be enough to cost him his job. I'm sorry but Kiffin took the Sullins bros and 4 good players and built an OL that could get the job done. Dooley... DOOLEY... left Jones the best OL he's fielded to date.

dude, that's not even close to the reason he should be let go.

Those ought to be sufficient....but are not to most on here...who still cling to injuries for an excuse!
However, I didn't say they were the ONLY reasons....

No Tenn. team wins the East without being able to beat both UGa and Fla...or at least one of them...Besides UT...those two programs are dominant....or didn't you know that? ...CBJ couldn't even beat USCe or Vandy in year 4 with the SEC title on the line....those two losses would've been reason enough for me....

As I've stated before...

Fla fired Zook...and the 'chump (even though he won 10 games one year)...
UGA fired Donnan for winning 62.5% of his games in the SEC and almost 68% overall...after his 4th year and posting his 2nd 8-4 finish..

Bama fired Curry after he won the SEC and finished a season at 10-2 for Gene Stallings!

Heck-fire bud.....CBJ has won 58.8% overall and is 14-18 in the SEC--a whopping 43.8% overall...and 9-7 SEC (56.3%) over the last 2 years...and you can't get ANYONE to see that CBJ should've already been fired!

I either get griped at for writing posts that are too long....or griped at for writing posts that are too short....

You guys are just too smart for me...

Honestly, I'm having a difficult time assessing what they think. Why I made the comment I did. I've seen nothing to indicate to me they have a willingness to run him off no matter what happens. Perhaps their strategy is to let him pursue another job??? I don't know.
