Exactly. So saying "he's ready" is probably not true. He didn't clearly jump Merk during the season AND Heupel is definitely not looking at a QB2 in the portal.
Those are the signs I've seen.
He’s not ur rightThe issue is: what if G-Mac isn't ready? He didn't clearly jump over Merk this year, who I think we all agree wasn't going to be ready. G-Mac stayed at QB3 and no, Heupel wouldn't just not give Merk the few QB2 snaps to be loyal unless Heupel sucks as a coach.
Signs I see: reports that Heupel is seeking a starter QB AND G-Mac not being better than Merk last year..... seem to say he's not ready.
What signs do you see that he is ready?
You believe Heupel would play a lesser talented player as QB2 AND put them in the depth chart at QB2 to "keep them happy?" You believe that kind of seniority based crap would be good for our locker room?I'm not convinced Mac wasn't clearly ahead of Merk. We never had a game where we needed one of them to start. Maybe
coach played Merk ahead of Mac in order to attempt to keep him happy in the hopes he would not transfer. Merk had seniority
and was rumored to be considering leaving whereas Mac was no threat to leave. I'm just opining and I would not be afraid of
having Mac start next season from day one. He will have the cupcakes to sharpen his game. He is capable.
Replacing an entire defensive staff, S&C coach, unproven QB. 8-5 with next years schedule wouldn’t suck to me. As a matter of fact, I think if we go 8-5 next year that will be a good coaching job. Have you seen the schedule???8-5 would suck and while I don't think it would mean he did an abysmal coaching job, it would be a clear sign he is not going to win a championship here. What are the special circumstances?
I think we all know Mac is/ was better than Merk. I think that was just out of respect to Merk. Mac could still be the guy regardless of who we pull from the portal, or even the freshman phenom. We won't truly know until the fall, but it's telling were going after high profile qb. Either way, we need a 3rd qbThe issue is: what if G-Mac isn't ready? Or Heup was protecting MacYou believe Heupel would play a lesser talented player as QB2 AND put them in the depth chart at QB2 to "keep them happy?" You believe that kind of seniority based crap would be good for our locker room?
I don't buy that for a second but if true, we have a much larger problem than QB or defense at UT.
Right!!Replacing an entire defensive staff, S&C coach, unproven QB. 8-5 with next years schedule wouldn’t suck to me. As a matter of fact, I think if we go 8-5 next year that will be a good coaching job. Have you seen the schedule???
I'm all for respect and respecting the team means you put the best players on the field and sub the 2nd best, etc, etc. A coach who subs based on "respect for his effort" or "seniority" over skill at the position is a poor coach.I think we all know Mac is/ was better than Merk. I know many people don't want Leavitt due to his injury, but if CJH were able to get this young man, wow, I'd be really impressed and it would restore my confidence in this coaching staff.
I haven't really seen Tennessee get a major transfer portal prospect thus far. I have seen them get players based on potential but not so much already proven type players.
I think Sam would be a great fit
I understand what you're saying, but I think you're digging too deep here.I'm all for respect and respecting the team means you put the best players on the field and sub the 2nd best, etc, etc. A coach who subs based on "respect for his effort" or "seniority" over skill at the position is a poor coach.
I don't accept that Heupel would do that to his locker room because that's a quick way to lose the hard work to excel from G-Mac and others. If G-Mac or another player knows he's not going to play not because he didn't win the job, not because he needs to work harder to prove himself, but because of seniority or some kind of emotional attachment Heupel has to another player...... there's little point in working to excel.
That's awful coaching.
Perhaps, but if a coach doesn't play me because he's trying to keep another guy from transferring, he's disrespecting me and my effort. There's no other way to see it. I put in the work to earn my spot. If I can't earn it, even with the work, why work hard.I understand what you're saying, but I think you're digging too deep here.
You ponying up $50 mil to buy him out? I doubt DW does.He won’t be around long in 2027 if we go 6-6. Keep pumping
I honestly do not know what these issues are. Doesn anyone have facts on this or is it speculation/internet garbage?I admit I don’t know a lot about him other than reading he’s the #1 QB in the portal. I did a lot of searching and reading on the internet after hearing TN is interested in him. From what I’ve read he had surgery in November and the Drs said he won’t be able to play football for at least 6 months.
Do we really need to pay several million for a QB who can‘t participate in spring practice? Plus there’s no guarantee he will be 100% after his injury. Not to mention all the rumors of his attitude and family issues.
