Probably so but to be fair that dudes wrs weren't doing him any favors yet he was still taking a beating and putting it in their hands

Never understood people getting worked up about that. I never cared when people scored on UT late in a game that was a blowout. Stop them. Its the weakest thing ever to expect a team to take it easy on another one. That would insult me more than a team scoring late.

Yep. I forgot the year but I remember Oklahoma beating a team pretty badly and basically took a knee 3 times and punted for a half I'd be more embarrassed and angry by that then just taking the beating

Used to always wish Fulmer would keep the foot on the gas like Spurrier would, so it was nice to see the Vols continuing to put points up for a change.

The commentators obviously aren't going to be clued into the fact that your bowl game is your last message to recruits who are looking at your program. Like it or not, style points matter in recruiting, when you are trying to make your last, best impression.

Last season's bowl game, Butch let off the gas as early as the middle of the 3rd Qtr. and what did Iowa do? In garbage time, they took full advantage in order to make the score look more respectable than it actually was.

I expect Butch remembered that and let Dormady throw it a few times. Still took his foot off the throttle

I was VERY pleased to see Butch pull the first string as early as he did, then let Dormady do everything he could. I think they called it "work the whole offense".
As much as ANYONE on our team...those young men who don't start every week..are working just as hard, all season long as anyone on the team. Never forget that THEIR contributions in PRACTICE are at least partially responsible for the great results we see in games. Especially with this being a major bowl game...it was really great to see Butch let them loose to have some FUN, not just "run-three-and-take-a-knee".

I'm sorry but Dormady busts his ass way too hard in practice to come in when the game is over and hand it off 3 times. Also, the same announcer made the comment "why don't you work the back ups in earlier in the game (before its essentially over)." Well, dumb*** you answered your own question. The game isn't over and we need our best players on the field to ensure we win. The other announcer totally got this concept and I really think I could hear him making a "pffft (can you believe this guy)" type sound under his breath while the other idiot was blabbing.

I would say all of our QBs are.

I keep thinking they need to change the way teams are ranked. Just because TN loses to Oklahoma doesn't suddenly mean they aren't better than teams like Boise State, Air Force, Northwestern, etc, etc.

The game was over, by executing our offense with our backups, it also helps Northwestern's backup D players who may have been getting reps. The last thing they want is to finally hit the field and watch the offense kneel on the ball on national TV. I'm sure they wanted to get in there and hit somebody too, if their union contracts allowed such shenanigans as running into people. I was just glad there were no targeting calls in the game to ruin people's day like they did Joey Bosa.

As Barry Switzer used to say "Let's go out there and hang half a hundred on them and call it a day." And "we'll go out there and out-athlete then." We didn't hang 50 on them but we sure "out athleted" them.

Where's this Meathead when Bama, Oregon, Ohio State and others are running up the score to 50 or 60 points??

Silly. Keeping your starters in with the game is over is dumb (I cringed with every touch McCaffery had last night when they were up 5 TDs). But running your offense with your backups is just common sense

Started to put this in the thread about the running up the score, but it's too funny to not share with everyone.

For all the run up the score (with backups!) whiners:

Two friends of mine coached a junior varsity team and found themselves up 35-0 in the third quarter in the last game of the season.

They began subbing 2nd and even 3rd stringers. During a timeout in the 4th quarter, the backup QB says "Coach, we've practiced hard all season. Please,please let us try to score." So the coach relents and calls a pass play.

The QB hits the 3rd string WR (who is a GIRL, btw) on a slant and she takes it about 40 yards to inside the 5. They call a couple running plays and score. The opposing coach is livid.

After the game the opposing coach is yelling and pointing out our coach. Cursing and talking about running up the score.

Our coach calmly replies:

"That was my backup QB that threw the pass. That was a girl that caught it. If I couldn't stop that, I'd quit coaching."

The other coach walked away and didn't say another word.

Not exactly hilarious, but it was mildly amusing.
Old rule of thumb for comics: Never preface a joke, anecdote, etc. with "This is hilarious".
Leave it to the reader to decide the level of hilarity.
