Rocky Top

Like I already said, the one redeeming factor with Rocky Top is that it irritates the hell out of opposing teams and their fans. I acknowledge that and to that end the song serves a meaningful purpose. I don't hate Rocky Top because I'm afraid of what others will think. I hate Rocky Top because I think it's a dreadful song. I've always thought that. It has nothing to do with some kind of suppressed "peer pressure" to conform.

You don't even like the band playing it?

I'm not joking. Be honest, if that song wasn't attached to Tennessee football whatsoever would you still like it? I'd guess a high number of people would say no. I hate Rocky Top! It's a backwoods sounding hillbilly song and I hate the fact that it's more identified as our fight song than our ACTUAL fight song Down The Field. All I can think of when I hear it is a bunch of toothless, shirtless mountain hillbillies playing banjos and blowing jugs, telling someone their mouth is "purdy" and to squeal like a pig! I love Tennessee Football and have since I was a kid but I have NEVER embraced the song Rocky Top...ever!

You are an elitist pig..being country doesn't make you stupid. Pretentious, presumptuous pig.

I freaking despise people like him. My family is a without a doubt a bunch of "hillbillies" They are also a bunch of well off businessmen and several of my cousins are respected professional musicians. ...

LOL! Wow! Oh the irony here. When did I EVER say anything about anyone being stupid? When did I ever personally refer to anyone at all? I'm being critical of a SONG! Lighten up. The only person I even referenced was my own grandfather when I said "this was my grandfather's music, not mine." I'm sorry if you think that makes me "elitist" but I don't think it does just because I voiced my opinion on one song or a genre of music.

I like the fact that it pisses off our opponents and their fans. However the song does nothing for me personally. I'd rather hear Down The Field, our OFFICIAL fight song.

My first concert was a Conway show back when I was 4. When she met him to get an autograph I thought she was going to faint lol.

Never had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Conway in concert. However, my first concert was Juice Newton and Charlie Daniles Band. So, I have that going for me.

Right here...toothless, shirtless mountain hillbillies, playing banjos and blowing jugs, telling someone their mouth is Purdy and to squeal like a pig? Do you realize how stupid and insulting a generalization like that is? It sounds like ignorant Yankee trash. You officially suck..pig.

As far as my family goes, we are not super successful buisness people or musicians. However, we are straight out of the Appalchian Mountains and we hold our own. Also, when we see other "hillbillies" doing well, we do what we can to support our own,

Sorry mods..but you wouldn't expect anyone to let racist trash go. You shouldn't let crap like this go. It is almost as bad. It is a kind of racism. I wish you would do more to stop it.

Yes you're right. How offensive of me to state the kind of visuals that pop up in my head when hearing a song. Especially nameless, faceless, fictional individuals. I'm sure there are plenty of people who hate the kind of music I like and believe me there are plenty of stereotypes that go along with that as well.

But yes, if we're being totally honest here, being from the south myself I DO have a disdain for that kind of hillbilly stereotype and music that chooses to glorify it! If you think that makes me elitist then so be it but that's not a part of stereotypical southern culture I will EVER be proud of.

GROW UP, please. We are who we are. One of the great benefits of being an adult is you do not have to apologize for who you are. "Rocky Top" is damn good song. Plese review this thread and watch the top tier muscial artisist who covered "Rocky Top".

What point are you trying to prove? I know the internet gives some folks all kinds of courage. The song "Rocky Top" is what is. It has been around since before I was a UT fan and I hope it is around a long time after I am gone. FWIW, it will be played at my funeral.

This thread does not need to be stickied. It needs to be etched in some sort of digital stone and preserved forever.
The shrinks would go out of business if their clients read this each morning. PURE ENTERTAINMENT!

OK, I'm going to make a confession here. Roast me if you want to but I effing hate Rock Top and always have! I have never liked it. Can we PLEASE pick a fight song that doesn't make us sound like the Beverly Hillbillies?

I mean..... what? This is something you should've taken to the grave with you.
