Rocky Top

Something has always bothered me about the song...like its written by someone else, no smoke on Rocky Top? Wtf? It is supposedly in the what mountains? Also, wild as a minx? We have a lot of critters here, but I've never seen a minx. And soda pop? That's not in our lingo. The moonshine reference with the revenuers disappearance, I get that and the reference to corn in a jar knowing how moonshine is made. Just seems like a yankee helped some mountain people write a song. I still love it though.

It's no Smoggy Smoke, talking about pollution. Also Minx are very common on the west end of the state. I've seen them countless times along the Hatchie and Obion Rivers

Yeah I always chase Mink off of my duck decoys when hunting the back chutes of the MS River, they're quite the little pest when duck hunting warm weather.

Yes they are. I had one try to make off with a stringer full of Brim one time I kid you not.

Where are these f'ing people coming from? One person saying he/she hates the song "Rocky Top". This one totally missing the idea of the song. One of the biggest games for our beloved Vols in a long, long time and these "fans"are coming out of the woodwork. To each their own I guess.

Have you ever tried to lure them in the boat? We feed them our dead minnows while crappie fishing the Hatchie and "The Chute" in fort pillow, they're cute as hell till they break your line or wrap it up in brush, I've shot at them and they don't give a dam

Haven't been to The Chute in ages. Got lots of great fishing memories up there.

OK, I'm going to make a confession here. Roast me if you want to but I effing hate Rock Top and always have! I have never liked it. Can we PLEASE pick a fight song that doesn't make us sound like the Beverly Hillbillies?

I am probably late to the party here brother, but get rid of Rocky Top so we don't sound like hillbillies?? Are you out of your f'n mind? We are hillbillies!!! Nofnway!!!

I'm not joking. Be honest, if that song wasn't attached to Tennessee football whatsoever would you still like it? I'd guess a high number of people would say no. I hate Rocky Top! It's a backwoods sounding hillbilly song and I hate the fact that it's more identified as our fight song than our ACTUAL fight song Down The Field. All I can think of when I hear it is a bunch of toothless, shirtless mountain hillbillies playing banjos and blowing jugs, telling someone their mouth is "purdy" and to squeal like a pig! I love Tennessee Football and have since I was a kid but I have NEVER embraced the song Rocky Top...ever!

Yes? That's cool though, go to YouTube and search for top fight songs. You may not like it but everyone else does because its in just about every list despite not being our actual fight song.

Brave Volunteer, are you drawing a distinction between the melody of Rocky Top, which admittedly is catchy, and the lyrics, which, as you observed, basically conjure up every Northern-held stereotype of Southerners and, particularly, those from Appalachia?

Well to be fair the melody of Rocky Top when played by the POTSB doesn't sound as "hick-ish" as it does when you hear the Osbourne Brothers version. Unfortunately even when I hear it played at the stadium, all I can think of is that infernal jug-blowing, banjo picking version and I freaking HATE that kind of straw-picking bluegrass hick music! That was my grandfather's music, not mine.

Then you throw in the crowd shouting

"Good Ole Rocky Top...
3441249.gif
...Rocky Top Tennessee"

and it just makes me cringe even more.

Here is another thing Brave Volunteer, who cares what other people think of us? Thats the whole point, to be different and unique other wise we will just be sheep! A$$ puppets if you will. Yes men, boring same old same old. Better to give them something to hate! Let Rocky Top play in their heads all the way back to the s***hole they came from because there isn't a prettier state in the union as far as i am concerned! Be loud, be proud!!

Like I already said, the one redeeming factor with Rocky Top is that it irritates the hell out of opposing teams and their fans. I acknowledge that and to that end the song serves a meaningful purpose. I don't hate Rocky Top because I'm afraid of what others will think. I hate Rocky Top because I think it's a dreadful song. I've always thought that. It has nothing to do with some kind of suppressed "peer pressure" to conform.
