Rivals class ranking

If you really think not getting top notch talent is not important you are sadly mistaken.

I never said that. I think that getting talent is important. But just because we're not a top 10 class doesn't mean that we're going to be a horrible team or that all is lost. On the other side of that... having a top 5 or 10 class does not guarantee a winning season.

Having a top 10 class means nothing to me. Even Fulmer (check history) had top 10 classes very often, also top 5 classes very often, TOP class many times as well. This was before everybody learned to use the computer and twitter and myspace and etc... to get recruits. Sometimes it is best to get the under rated players that play as a TEAM. Having a top recruiting class doesn't mean you are going to win all of the time or even make it to a BCS. To me recruiting rankings are just a conversation piece. Doesn't mean we are going to win or lose.

This is true. You've got to have the coaching to go with it. You have to have both and a little luck to win big.

I agree we still have opportunity to finish top 10. Not just about the 5 star, but the quantity, too. If we can pad the list with a few more 2 or 3 star, I think we can sneak up a couple of spots.
To the point about always finishing with a top rated class, I'm always amazed at what Beamer accomplishes at VT. He's had some good classes, but you don't always think of Virginia Tech when it comes to top recruiting classes.

I'm pretty sure that adding 2 and 3 star recruits would hurt our ranking... but I'm not completely sure how Rivals works.

I could be wrong about 2 star. It should not hurt a class, but probably wouldn't move the needle much. 3 star would add to the overall depth of a class. You really see this point in basketball recruiting. The top rated classes usually have more scholarships to give. Granted, they have great players, but they're separated from the lower 10 in that they have more players, too.

Huge room for error in ranking recruiting classes. Anyone in the top 15 or so might end up with the top class where it matters, on the field. Grades, injuries, transfers, attitude, and just plain being over-rated has paid havoc on top classes in the past, and will continue to do so. That being said, it is still exciting to watch the recruiting battles and the rankings of "experts" (conjecture would be more like it).

Agree 100% on the coaching aspect of this. Bring in talent, and don't coach them up...they'll just waste away in mediocrity.

But, had we not landed some highly ranked prospects in the mid-90s, 98 wouldn't have happened.

Does a great or solid class guarantee W's, nope. BUT, if we don't get good talent in, it does guarantee a struggle for us.

BTW, just being a smart..s now, if recruiting rankings don't matter, why even read the post. Just sayin.

:)

This illustration is easier to see with the basketball recruiting. What separates the top teams from the lower 10 is the total number of recruits. Granted, they are all great players, it's just that they have more total great players than a team like Tennessee or whoever, which has 3 total. Exceptions to the rule are the super great vs. the sorta great, etc., but the point is more players are better.

I agree 100% that coaching is extremely important. I do think, however, that it also takes loads of talent to win a NC.

Some don't. The ones that do are set on fire. How dare anyone question the coach.

I have no issues with people questioning the coach. It is just those who question the coach before he has had a chance to do anything that I have a problem with.
