Riley to USC…the inevitable Josh Heupel to OU freak out thread

And make a pot of coffee.

*Even if we're not officially in a coaching search, this thread has the potential to be legendary.

GRUDENITES ASSEMBLE!!!
No easier way to shoot a program through the head these days than to hire Gruden as a coach. I’m talking about even as a peewee league coach. The institution and everyone involved whether it’s fair or not will have to live with explaining why they hired a racist and wants kids led by a racist. We have nuclear testing sites in Nevada less radioactive than is Gruden.

I hate to say this but I would not be surprised if a Press Conference isn't called in the next couple of days. I hope not but! I would think if they pay out the buyout and bump his salary 2 million he would go.it would be hard to keep him. Who would coach the team or would we even go. I would say UT would have to double his salary to keep him. I am talking 8 million and THE DC would need a big bump to stay.. With the coach leaving OK does not pay a buyout and i bet LR has to pay them something.
I dont think you need to be worried unless this takes 2 weeks. By then that means their top targets they whiff on and are coming down to earth then Heupel might be on that part of their list. If though in the scenario you mentioned and we would be looking for a coach. Seeing as they clearly won't bite the bullet and go get Lane Kiffin. Get creative and try and get Deion Sanders before Florida State and make buyout average but with amendment that leaves Tennessee for Florida State his buyout would be triple. I dont know that i trust his Xs and Os but stars will want to play for him. So we would have plenty of Jimmys and Joes.

Oklahoma has hired 1 ex-head coach in the last 70 years and he flamed out in a year. All their other hires have been some level of assistant or coordinator. I won't be surprised at all if they go coordinator again.

The cards are falling okay right now. I don't want Heupel leaving at all, but Kiffin is still on the table and he's a winner. I'd take him back in a heartbeat. Thank God he didn't get the Florida job. This post season coaching hire stuff is insane.

A great start at a powerful football program with the future looking bright…Heup could be coaching perennial powerhouse Vols making more than Saban at Alabama and have a huge coaching legacy. Bouncing around for what’s nice next year is a bad career move. It’s like Kiffin; he could have possibly been the answer at Tennessee and making stupid ridiculous money now with championships, but he bounced and potentially delayed his career progression.
I’m not saying Tennessee is the best play in the nation to coach (though it is 😬), but the coaches jumping on the carousel seem to be bad career moves.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Oklahoma target Kevin Wilson. He's a great offensive coach, he coached there for a decade and was their OC for years under Stoops. He has some head coaching experience at Indiana, whom he improved from 1-11 to 6-6 with their first bowl in 8 years, and took their offense from 88th in the nation to 19th, before he quit and went to Ohio State. Ohio State has the #1 offense in CFB this year and are rarely out of the top 5 under him. Stoops loved him.

From 2016-2021
OK 5 1ST RND PICKS
USC 4 1ST RND PICKS
seems to me OK isn't a step below recently.
Can't spell SUCKS without 'U' 'S' 'C'.

Nobody knows what’s going to happen but it only makes sense for Oklahoma to kick the tires on a great former player. Gotta prepare for this to go either way… but I will say that if he ends up there it means to me they missed on a few top targets.

Just viewed the OU boards and the majority don’t want Heupel and most are positive they can do much better.
Thats what I have said this afternoon not even looking at a message board. They still see themselves as a pick your candidate type of job. The only time they will get to Heupel is if they swing big and reality sets in within a couple weeks and then have to go to the candidates who are good or up and comers. At this point though they look at it like we been there done that with Heupel and we think we can do better. Not saying thats what they should feel. But if roles were reversed say for instance Dave Clawson. We ran him off as coordinator. Even though he has done impressive things at Wake Forest as the head coach. Too many Tennessee fans would say thanks but no thanks we been there done that.

True but kiffin is a better coach now than he was then
Kiffin would crush it if he came back to Tennessee with a purpose. Book that and stamp it in gold. GBO!!!

Butch had better seasons in Knoxville than Kiffin did.
For clarity are you comparing all of Butchs tenure at Tennessee to Kiffins 1 year here? Or Are you comparing Butchs career to Kiffins time at Ole Miss?
Butch started and ended poorly. Took us to an all time low gave us our 1st 8 loss season in school history. 😝 Kiffin made Jonathan Crompton a flat out bust into a decent SEC qb and helped him become a pro as taxi squad and north of border which he never would have gotten that shot without that senior season. And what Kiffin has done at Ole Miss is something they arent accustomed to since the 60s. Butch did some good things here too dont get me wrong. Forever grateful for Dobbs and the Dobbsnail boot as well as the unbeaten bowls when we got there. But losing to Vandy with a chance to make SEC title game is unforgivable.

Look guys, if he gets offered there’s no way Heupel turns down OU. You wouldn’t either if you were him.
In the few months that he’s been here, Heup has completely fallen in love with UT. And he hates OU from previously coaching there and because an OU co-ed stood him up on a date when he played there. In fact, it’s rumored that he hasn’t spoken with his mom in quite a few months because she won’t get an 865 area code.

Freeze did comparable things at Ole Miss.
Kiffin got out coached here against UCLA, Ole Miss, and Virginia Tech. He left our program in shambles and the NCAA with an active investigation that put us on probation. He was recruiting thugs that could not even rob a Pilot station without getting caught. He was hanging USC banners in our training facilities. And him leaving the program the way he did hurt the image of Tennessee football more than any other thing in our history. The character of the program was a direct result of the character of the head coach.

Butch had a better season in 2015 than Kiffin did in 2009. And I was never a Butch fan either.
