You kind of made my point though; how do you make soccer interesting for people who aren't inclined to watch or care about it? You played "boring" sports, but learned to appreciate sports that, at least on the surface (football, basketball, etc.), have more action. How do you make me interested in soccer if I don't grow up playing it?

Serious question. Not trying to play devil's advocate. I hate the devil.

Why is it my responsibility to make it interesting for you? If the Cardinals aren't on tv, I absolutely can't stand watching baseball. It makes me want to poke my eyes out. Yet, I don't ask for anyone to change the game in order to give me a reason to watch. I respect the game and those who are fans of it. I think soccer fans would like the same in return. Don't like it? That's fine, just don't disrespect the athletes who play it and those who like to watch it. By the way, this isn't really directed at you cause I know you aren't being a douche like others, just the broad questions you are asking.

My stance on Apple Pie: Delicious :)

Yes, but, and here's the critical question: With or without cheese? :p

I usually just browse the recruiting forum threads, but I'm procrastinating at work today, so I'm throwing in a little more than usual. :hi:

I completely understand your perspective. I do think it is difficult to change a nation's tastes (broad generalization intended). That's all I was trying to point out. I was talking with a co-worker about soccer and he grew up playing and loves to watch the premier leagues play. He understands the strategies, etc. I look at it and see a big field with several guys running around kicking a ball.

Not to bash Burger, but I don't like to disrespect the things other people like. Our life experiences are different and that makes this board, this country, and the world an interesting place.

Let's keep it civil and you can argue for or against whatever you want. When you disrespect others it always turns into some kind of flame war...

FYI

I believe it was discussed and voted on in another thread that from now on ALL sarcastic replies or posts will be typed in a blue font so the comprehension impaired can be included without discrimination.

Doing my part to make 'Murica a better place. :hi:

I'll try to do better.

My son played soccer when he was growing up, and he's now one of America's military elite.

My grandson plays football, and has received some interest from MTSU. We're very proud of both of them.

My favorite sports are #1 football, and #2 baseball, but my son learned a lot of valuable life lessons while playing soccer, and like I said, my wife loves curling, so although at times I have a tendency similar to Burger's to embrace purely American sports, I have to admit that pretty much most sports that I can think of are valuable experiences for the participants.

I would like to see a renewed interest in the shooting sports among the younger generation, for what that's worth.

Well said. There are some stats to show the nation's tastes are changing though. Among 15-30 year olds soccer has reached the same popularity as baseball. I'll be interested to see America's sports culture 30 years from now (I'm 29). It seems like all of the soccer haters on tv are 50 or older. Once they retire, I believe the attention it gets in mainstream media will dramatically increase in America.

Good dialog on here today. I agree, Dust. And I am 60 and really don't care for the sport. I am a football/baseball equally as #1, golf #2, basketball #3, etc. Yet, I can see it coming like a freight train. It is a global world. Just because America likes something it does not mean the other 5.7 + billion people on the planet care for it. As Americans become more global in their lives and thinking, it is just natural that many will be attracted to what the rest of the world prefers in sports. Add in that soccer is attracting more and more athletes in the schools in this country with schools being able to field teams and a lower cost than other sports. Add in all the immigrants and their children that have moved to the states - with the vast majority preferring soccer. To deny that soccer will not be equally strong in the states in a couple of decades is probably pretty naïve.

For everybody else on here: having played the game on a D-1 level and been a lifelong Reds fan - sorry Cards fans - to be bored with baseball is to not know baseball. I would be same way with soccer, but can change that by learning the game better. So I see no benefit to disparaging it except for fun and joking. Baseball is a very intricate, complex, highly athletic sport when played well. Try hitting a 95 mph fastball, an 85 MPH slider, a 82 MPH splitter or an unexpected 75 MPH change. Some of the defensive plays I have seen through the years are almost unbelievable with the athleticism. Today - watch Mike Trout play and tell that he was boring. The periods of what appears to be inactivity with only 3 people involved ignores the focus and understanding of their role that is required of the other players on the field - along with the instantaneous reactions by all of the players to the ball being hit into play. All of that leaves out the planning, game decisions, Sabermetrics versus traditional analysis, etc.

Hockey actually has action in it. I just think soccer is a snoozer. The game is easy to figure out and everything.

Guys, I'm certainly not opposed to Kate Upton , but we do have guidelines in place so that people can comfortably view the site from work or in front of a spouse or kids. I know not everyone agrees with that stance and it's a gray area sometimes, but it is our guideline based on some reasons people have touched on in this thread along with other issues that we've run into with our server host and our advertisers. Maybe we will come up with a better solution at some point in the future.

. The funny thing is that's probably the most clothing I've seen on a Kate Upton pic
