The freakouts I saw on facebook and other places about Donovan not making the final 23 was somewhat funny. Even in the last interview I saw with him, he pretty much said it was a good possibility. I'm ready for the new, younger guys to step up and hope that even if this Cup and our G-o-D is rough, it pays off in the future.

Does Wondo see the field in Brazil, or is he subbing?

At least MLB can't end in a 0-0 tie like soccer. Talk about a waste of time. Even a 1-0 score is boring. And soccer players take dives like a bunch of freaking pansies. /rant

Yeah they are busy and so am I ,and my pay is squat comparatively. That is more depressing than the exuberant amount of baseball games until football season, but just barely lol

When football season comes around MLB will be fighting reruns of Family Matters for ratings. If Boston or New York are not in the world series they will have a rough go .PBS will run The Joy of Painting marathon to grab ratings.

I think the biggest hurdle for Americans to embrace soccer is just understanding what the heck is going on. I understand that you get a point for scoring a goal. That about sums up my knowledge of soccer. And when there's only one goal in a game, wow. But, I'm not interested in bashing a sport that other people love. I used to love baseball but stopped watching it regularly when I canceled cable. But I understood why people thought it was boring; I just understood most of the rules and the intricacies. It's going to be difficult to get Soccer to that point for most of the US.

Messi and his $28 mill a year wants to know what grown men are supposed to make. People that assume it's for kids have never played at a high level or likely watched much at a high level so I just ignore there thoughts because how can you comment on something you know nothing about...


Also, personally I am glad Landon was left off.. I think it was time for a change this isn't his team anymore. This is Dempsey and Michael Bradley's team...

And another name to watch is Wondolowski.. He's a spark plug off the bench in the 2nd half.

Wondo may not be the best athlete on the team, but he sure has a nose for the goal. He'll be a fun one to watch.

Sidenote: most of the RF is going to hate this thread during the World Cup. I predict that almost the entire thread will be either soccer discussion and people complaining about the soccer discussion.

It's not difficult in America to educate yourself on a game if you want to. The sports I PLAYED were ice hockey, soccer, and basketball for awhile. Yet, I'd say I have a pretty in depth knowledge of football, baseball, and others.

I agree with you on the diving and play acting. Unfortunately, in some cultures (primarily hispanic) the behavior is rewarded and encouraged. Yet, all sports have their black eyes if you really want to focus on them.

Flopping is the reason most Americans don't like soccer I agree. Lebron is doing the same to the NBA.

Hockey us just as boring, there are at least 100 turnovers a game, to much stoppage with icing every other minute, and is a time out box really manly?

I've broken: 1 cheek bone, 3 ribs, 2 collarbones, my nose 3 times and countless fingers and toes playing soccer.
Also been in 2 fights.

And it was actually invented by conquerors who chopped off the heads of people they conquered and then kicked it around... But yeah definitely for kids.

No wonder I don't like it. They took the interesting stuff out.

The Mayans had a sports game that was a mix of rugby and basketball with a little soccer and football mixed kn. field had vertical hoops at either end. To score, the ball had to go through the hoop.

Losing team was executed. Talk about single elimination tourney...gives a whole new meaning to sudden death playoff

Solid post Dust10! I do not like this part of the game at all either. I think it is totally lame. But people do it in EVERY sport that I can think of.

You kind of made my point though; how do you make soccer interesting for people who aren't inclined to watch or care about it? You played "boring" sports, but learned to appreciate sports that, at least on the surface (football, basketball, etc.), have more action. How do you make me interested in soccer if I don't grow up playing it?

Touché on the penalty box, but at least there's a good chance for a fight or stitches, missing teeth, etc.

If you want to see soccer with contact and less flopping watch some of the German and Irish leagues. Any Spanish league or leagues with players of that type will have lots of flopping like Dust said. I can barely watch some of them, but it amazes me how many people give basketball a pass for the flopping and it's getting just as bad if not worse.

In soccer the guy flopping might be 5'8" 150, maybe the hit did knock him down.. In the nba the guy is 6'8" 250.. I doubt that shoulder bump sen you 12 feet.

I respect and admire anybody that plays any sport. If someone loves watching and/or playing the game of soccer, that's fine. Everybody has different tastes. Soccer isn't my favorite sport, but frankly I respect someone who plays soccer and actually breaks a sweat than the majority of Americans who lay on their ass all day and take up space.

With that being said, in regards to the sporting world, there is American competetive tackle football and then there is everything else. Football is the greatest sport on the planet, IMO.

Actually, I hate soccer, but if you are going to discuss it, this is the place (off topic thread). I don't mind the discussion if you don't mind the occasional comment about how boring it is. I don't quite understand why people get offended because someone doesn't like the same thing they do. I see that some people on here don't like baseball or find it boring. I love baseball. If somebody doesn't like it, so what? Doesn't mean a thing to me. I realize these guys are great athletes in great condition. Still can't stand it. My :twocents:

I have no issue when people don't like soccer, my issue is the people who belittle it or say it's for girls. You don't have to like everything someone likes but people should be respectful.

But I think that should go for everything from politics and religion to sports and foods.

I'm not a fan of soccer myself, but my 3 year old is learning to play. Because I don't care for it doesn't mean he shouldn't have the oppurtunity to decide for himself as he grows up.

As for the bolded. I am a College Program Director and Teacher. I actually teach lessons on this.

I grew up playing baseball, basketball, soccer, then football, then Folkstyle, Greco, and Freestyle wrestling. I know the strategies and intricacies of all of these sports quite well. That being said....baseball is boring unless you are the one playing. But, to each their own for sure. My stance on Apple Pie: Delicious
