Hence my lack of engineering comment. :p

If the hot tub is going to be on top of the deck it will require a lot fewer cuts and should be able to be assembled rather quickly I would think. Also, don't know if the ground would need to be prepped in any way to prepare for the weight of the hot tub.

Oh, I know, was just piggybacking off of your comment.
Whenever you see one of those videos of a deck failure online or the news, 90% of the time, it's the corners breaking away.
Usually not the builder's fault, the deck is originally installed as a normal deck. People often add hot tubs or 30 people at a bbq, later.

Just mentioning it as a safety precaution for any of the Vol fans out there, leave the hot tub sliding into the yard to the UGA fans

Surgeon lost his phillips head? I really don't know that Doc. My aunt usually goes with my mom to her doctor appointments. I think it had something to do with not wanting to have to have surgery again.

I would recommend that she rethink that if it’s really a misplaced screw...a spinal cord stimulator is surgically implanted...so she would still be having surgery. If moving the fusion screw fixes the problem, that is the way to go. Jmo :hi:

Hey glitch how much to build a 10' by 20' deck? No rails or anything. Im thinking of putting a hot tub out back . Would you put the hot tub on top of the deck or put down a slab and build the deck around it?

Not Glitch, but you want to have access to hot tub mechanical equipment as well as plumbing...if hot tub is ground level, would you have trouble getting in and out of it?

My son just built a 16’x8’ deck with an ADA wheelchair ramp for an equine disabled therapy charity. This was his Eagle Scout Project.
It was built to hold multiple electric wheelchairs.
We used 2” thick joists, 2” thick blocking between joists, and 2” thick floor planks. Used Simpson Strong Ties steel braces and gussets for stability. It could easily hold a good sized hot tub... I would double the joists is the hot tub base area.

Hope that helps...:hi:

Yessir
Need thicker floor planks if hottub goes on top.

A typical hot tub will run between 6'6 and up, spanning minimum of 5 deck joists. Due to the flat bottom design, the joists will actually be supporting the weight.
However, I prefer thickness on decking planks under almost any circumstance, especially if it will not be under roof, as the sun and rain will take their toll. Thinner planks are more prone to warping.
If you can afford composite, it eventually pays for itself on open air decks through less maintenance (resealing/rot).

And Newt, as far as your joists, if it will be upper level or have stairs/steps connected, then 10" is the recommended.

In response to the debate in the football thread, the idea of socialism is not viable at any level above the family unit. When the number of people is too large, the number of people producing as much or more than they consume cannot sustain the pace of those producing less than they consume. There is also little to no incentive or time to invent new products or improve processes because those that could and would are busy trying to produce enough to provide for those that consume more than they produce.

The idea of socialism is ideal but the practice of socialism is not possible on a large scale.

He InVol,
Still hasn’t come through...
Could you resend it just in case?

Something is wrong with the settings on my phone. I think I changed my email password on my desktop and forgot to on my phone. I can't remember what my password is. I sent it from another email and it shows it went through. Let me know if it doesn't come through.

We used 2” x 10” joists on my son’s Eagle Scout Project. Nothing will affect that deck. We used hurricane braces and tension ties with carriage bolts.

I got it and responded.
Thanks

Hey InVol, I appreciate the offer to help facilitate the cushioning of my porch couches. However, Mrs. Glitch done been to old timer pottery and got a great deal.

Did you plan on standard size cushions? Like like they fit great.

We did not really have a cushion plan. Probably not a smart move but it worked out this time. Yeah. I am very happy with the end result.
