I get that. Then I'd say definitely Bonds.

Here's the alltime leaders in WAR
Career Leaders &amp Records for Wins Above Replacement | Baseball-Reference.com

The first three (Ruth, Cy Young, Walter Johnson) was before segregation, so I don't weigh their accomplishments the same.

The next two are Bonds and Willie Mays. There are arguments for both of them.

Bonds would be a good pick if not for the steroid era.

I’m with you on the older generation also. They didn’t play against the same level of athlete imo, and the pitches weren’t touching 90 mph. Not the same game. A guy turning around 98mph fastballs for homers or base hits is a lot more impressive than a dude doing the same to 85 mph pitches. Great documentary on Netflix about this btw called fastball. I wonder if their curves and other specialty pitches compared to the way guys throw them today.

This is a tough question. People say Ruth a lot, but I disagree. I like the above picks of Rose and Aaron.

To me, the best baseball player of all time should be able to do it all, or at least most of the game. Rose for example could do it all except hit for power.

If you’re going down as the goat baseball player, you need to be a 5 tool player or as close to a 5 tool as possible. A great hitter who is an average fielder is not the greatest baseball player who ever lived I don’t think.

Had a friend who said Willie Mays, that’s long before my time, but his reasoning is that Mays could do it all. But it’s funny how much more difficult this question is than the basketball or football question.

Babe Ruth is the goat in baseball and it isn’t close. He was the top pitcher in baseball and then decided he wanted to hit all the time. He was the most prolific hitter of his era. When he started the homerun barrage there weren’t homerun hitters. Some years he hit more homeruns by himself than other teams hit combined.

He did things that at the time were impossible for other players to do. There never will be someone who is that far above everyone else in their time, than he was.

Bonds, Aaron and those guys were awesome but he did it when nobody else could.

Not one cubby comes to mind

I hate the Cubs with a passion but I met Ernie Banks in 1990 and he was one of the nicest people I have ever met. He sat and talked baseball with a 17 year old kid like I was important.

(Card Show in Atlanta. Also got Mickey Mantle’s autograph. He was the opposite of Banks.)

That was more at poking fun at drvenner. Sosa was one of my favorite players growing up but I'm not going to add him because of the juice

2B, 3B, OF, 1B

All-time hits leader.

No? Has to be given consideration. Should be in HOF.

I have a personal bias against him. I don't like him as a person. I will say he was one of the best hitters who ever played. I probably should not judge how great he is because I think he's a total asshat. Cobb was too, so there's that. I don't like him, either. I don't want to discuss the HOF because we will have to agree to disagree. I respect your opinion, though.

I loved the HR race. I hate that both of them turned out to be full on juicers. Neither should be in the HOF, IMO. McGwire was my favorite player after Sandberg retired. Totally bummed about how it turned out.

Agreed, tho in my opinion steroids should not be illegal if regulated by a dr.

Who is the best pitcher who ever played? Maybe more consensus there?

Many come to mind. Koufax is the best in just about any five year stretch. I love Bob Gibson, and then you have the old-timers like Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Cy Young and, more recently, pitchers like Orel Hershiser, Greg Maddux, Ferguson Jenkins (Cubs bias here), and so many more. If I had to pick one, I would take Walter Johnson.
